Another winner from Rogov 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rogov's 2008 Guide to Israeli Wines is the latest winner in Rogov's, the top Israeli wine critic and Ha'aretz's wine writer, series of reviews. With several thousand new reviews and 12 new wineries, as well as an excellent series of articles about the history of Israeli wine and the wine revolution that has been taking place over the past 20 years, this is a must for any wine lover. It's time Israeli wines were discovered by all - Jew and non-Jew - and this book is a great start to bringing the wonders of Israeli wine to those outside of the country (and yet is also highly appreciated by those, like me, who live in Israel).

Beyond this important book, for more information on Israeli wine - which isn't all kosher despite the amazon tagging - see HaKerem: The Israeli Wine [...]

Enthusiastically recommended for all wine enthusiasts 5 out of 5 stars.

Its been within the last decade that Israel has achieved a justified fame and recognition for the quality of its wines. Now in a newly revised and updated fourth edition, "Rogov's Guide To Israeli Wines 2008" continues to bring addition to the wines of Israel by showcasing not only the more than 2,000 vintages (tasted, rated and described), but also more than 150 Israeli wineries. Enhanced for the wine connoisseur with a tasting chart, a detailed map of Israel's wine regions, and 500 new releases along with their critiques. "Rogov's Guide To Israeli Wines 2008" is enthusiastically recommended for all wine enthusiasts, and is a reliable reference guide for restauranteurs and retail wine sellers.

Editorial Review:

In Italy, wine is more than an accompaniment to food; it's a cultural institution and a source of national pride. Each of Italy's 20 significant wine-producing regions is featured here, with comprehensive details about local grape varieties and notable winemakers. In all, over 2,000 of Italy's best wines and producers are profiled and their recent vintages rated, from the powerful Amarone wines of Veneto in the north to Tuscany's lush Sangiovese grape-based chiantis and bold "Super Tuscans," through the many Sicilian wines made from the ancient cattaratto and carricante vines dotting the island. Of special interest to travelers are the regional maps, restaurant reviews, and tips on matching wines with the local cuisine, along with a glossary of Italian wine terms.

Great little guide to carry with you everywhere... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've been a fan of Andrea Robinson for several years after first seeing her on Food Network some time ago. Her wine buying guide is down-to-earth and unpretentious. The wines are grouped into categories and subcategories and each review contains a variety of ratings in addition to a short little blurb about the wine's flavors. It is small enough that I can fit it in my handbag and carry wherever I go. I love that the wines reviewed are from a wide range of prices and most are ones you can find at your local grocery store or packie. I recently discovered a wonderful bottle of Chenin Blanc for $5.50 per bottle, thanks to this guide.

Editorial Review:

Completely updated with information on more than 800 of the country's top-selling wines (100 more than were included in the 2006 edition), Andrea Robinson's buying guide is dedicated to the best-quality, most popular, and most readily available wines found in stores and restaurants. In addition to giving the lowdown on taste and value, this compact resource is packed with unique features such as:

·Candid "from the trenches" comments from consumers and wine pros alike

·Results of "kitchen survivor test," revealing how each wine fares as a leftover

·Robinson's Best Bets or solving every buying dilemma, from hip wines to impress a date to blue-chip choices
for a client

·Listing of the years' top-performing wines at every price level, from steal to splurge

Short.....but Sweet!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

What a truly wonderful small book!

While it's true that I am a fan of Mr. Johnson's previous offerings I found this to be an indispensable guide due to it's size and "off-the-cuff" sense of humour that permeates the book. Obviously Hugh Johnson knows from which he speaks and is most comfortable in relaying information without seeming arrogant or smug. Something I haven't always been able to say regarding other "so-called" experts books on wine.

As to the book itself...very well done. Wonderful photographs, I especially enjoyed the section on corkscrews, and info that not only the layman could use but anyone who considers himself a fan of the Viticulture! Other chapters include the proper way of opening a bottle of wine, serving, tasting and judging. All pertinent information! Perhaps what I enjoyed most from this book is simply that it doesn't pretend to be anything more than a small serving of information that will help you enjoy that bottle of wine that you've just purchased and want to get the most of. No pretense here....just good, solid information at your fingertips. Bravo!

Overall, if you count yourself as one who doesn't wish to spend a lot of your hard earned dollars on a cumbersome, thick book on wines (Mr. Johnson has written those as well, and I have that also....and so should you!) than pick up a copy of "Hugh Johnson's How To Enjoy Your Wine" and while it may not have everything you may need to know it will get you through an evening out in your favorite restaurant. ENJOY!!

Better than Baedecker for the wine student 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Learning about wine involves, tasting, reading and travelling. Since serious trips are more than a couple of days and usually on one's vacation time, it pays to have a tour guide. Christopher Fielden is an importer and polific author who has lived in France.

Perhaps in the 21st century will have have a headset guide as about as museums have - only beamed down from a satellite. But in the mean time Fielden is the best there is. I have just successfully road tested this book for three weeks in France.

Fielden is knowledgeable (he also wrote Exploring Wines & Spirits, the text for the Wines & Spirits Education Trust in London - probably the best wine education body in the world) and he is a good travelling companion. Happy wine trails!!

Informative, fascinating, imminently practical 5 out of 5 stars.

For the true dionysian wine lover 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

From the very beginning: Peter May's, and Robin Garr's, introductions to this book are a piece of great work in broadening the horizon to a really enjoyable world of wine.
The looks of the book show that Peter's May's remarkable collection of unusual wine labels has been in the hands of very good people. And, I want to tell you what my wife said when I handed the book to her to see: "It feels like one wants to touch it!" - I believe that says everything on behalf of purchasing a copy of your own. It's great to see things in the web, but the same on real paper just gives you the best vibes.

The info Peter May gives about each label, and the wine behind it, is great reading. I truly believe that the world of wine lovers needs his kind of angles to make wine the fun it should be!

This book is an excellent gift to a wine lover with an open, dionysian mind!

In a way I consider this little book to be a classic already now.

Editorial Review:

Fat Bastard Chardonnay, Lazy Lizard Shiraz, White Trash White.

These three wines—and more than 100 others—can be found in Marilyn Merlot and the Naked Grape, a celebration of the oddest wines in the world. Some have strange names, like Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush. Others have bizarre artwork, like the Magritte-inspired UFO invasion. Still others have unusual production features (Braille typography, heat-sensitive inks, lenticular art, and more).

Along with brilliant reproductions of the original labels, we'll feature brief stories about the origins of the wines, plus tasting notes from the author. Readers will learn about unusual vineyards (like Cleavage Creek, which donates its proceeds to breast cancer research) as well as the most innovative artists working in the wine label medium. Finally, there's an appendix of resources that will help you buy these wines—so you can try them for yourself!

Editorial Review:

“A book about fish that’s as fun as it is informative, and as easy to read as it is hard to put down.”--Alton Brown, creator and host of the hit Food Network show Good Eats and author of I’m Just Here for the Food

The ultimate guide to fish and shellfish, from deep to dock to dinner plate
What’s in a fish’s name? History, mythology, and marketing: You’ll find each in the names of everyday seafood, although sometimes it’s what you don’t find that’s most interesting. Consider the Patagonian toothfish. Never heard of it? That’s because it’s Chilean Sea Bass on menus, even though it’s not a bass, nor is it found primarily off the coast of Chile. Perhaps you’d prefer a nice Pacific red snapper fillet? Too bad, all fish sold using that name are actually rockfish. You could always order a jumbo shrimp . . . or would that be a colossal prawn? And if the menu says “dolphin,” what are you eating, really?
Of course, knowing the name of a fish is just what comes before eating it, and Fish on a First-Name Basis contains more than a hundred mouthwatering recipes, from classic fish-and-chips, lobster rolls, and crab fritters to Scalloped Ceviche and Cinnamon Crunch Tilapia.
With Fish on a First-Name Basis, author Rob DeBorde has also filled in the gaps most seafood cookbooks leave open by crafting an indispensable scrapbook of seafood science, fish-market full disclosures, essential cooking tips, and even the truth behind a few underwater urban legends. With more than two hundred illustrations, photographs, and diagrams showing you exactly where to cut, crack, or shuck, Fish on a First-Name Basis is a treat for the eyes as well as the stomach.
Informative, witty, and easy to read, Fish on a First-Name Basis is a must-read whether you’re a seafood fanatic or a fish-phobic first-timer.

“Terror struck the undersea community when Rob DeBorde wrote this book. Thanks to this grand fishing expedition, sea creatures everywhere will be forced to come out of their shells and onto our tables. A delight to read and cook from, Fish will cause a great many fish to be eaten.”--Steven A. Shaw, author of Turning the Tables

THE book on South American wines. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Not only is this book as comprehensive as one would hope with respect to information and detail but it is also a lively read.

Waldin has clearly mastered his subject. In a world of 'celebrity' wine writers it's very reassuring to come across one that has actually been to the places about which he is writing. Waldin is obviously not a writer to 'toe the line' and it is clear that he isn't merely a mouthpiece for one of the larger chateaux or wine 'conglomerates'.

The addition of some wonderful photographs and detailed maps only enhance what is a must have for any serious or even amateur wine buff.

Editorial Review:

How have wineries become so much more than mere production facilities, bringing wine to life in some of the world’s most striking architecture? Award-winning wine writer Peter Richards has traveled and researched extensively to uncover the intriguing story of iconic wineries around the world and how they came to be as they are. He takes readers on a visual tour of 80 of the world’s most striking, fascinating, and impressive wineries, from seventeen wine countries and regions. In addition to discussing both wine and architecture, he includes producer fact boxes with contact details, wine tips, and visitor information, plus a world map that makes locating the wineries easy. With more than 200 inspiring color photographs, this is an illuminating book for wine lovers, armchair tourists, and travelers.
