Editorial Review:

Cognac is associated not only with tradition and quality, but also with refinement, luxury, and even style. Although the region that produces it -- the Charente -- is quite small, the many different brands vary greatly in taste and aroma. More than a hundred producers -- from world-famous names of fascinating but little-known smaller vinters and distillers -- are profiled in this handsome guide. Organized alphabetically for easy reference and illustrated with full-color photographs of the distinctive bottles, the entries contain extensive tasting notes describing aroma and flavor providing information about the quality and individual character of each brand. In addition, the book teaches you everything you might want to know about Cognac, from its history to the way it is distilled and aged to recipes for Cognac cocktails. Complete with a glossary, Cognac is a must not only for aficionados but for anyone who has ever enjoyed a sip of fine Cognac after a wonderful meal.

Does its job 5 out of 5 stars.

Only book of its type, as far as I know. Went on a wine tasting trip to Priorat, Montsant, and Penedes with my father, and found this guide invaluable. It was practically the only source of information we had when we set out, and it gave us plenty of info for a perfect 4 days of wine tasting. Simple things, like hotels, generally efficient routes through the regions, restaurants, etc., would have been dramatically more difficult to plan without this guide. For what it's worth, she's absolutely right about the tourism office in Falset, they have a giant map of the Montsant and Priorat regions that supplements this book perfectly.

If I have any complaint, it's that she's very liberal in her praise. She is unlikely to tell you when a given winery, much less a region, isn't very good. But so what? The purpose of this guide is to give you enough information to be able to go there and make your own judgments.

Editorial Review:

From traditional, world-famous bodegas to new, futuristic wineries, this invaluable guide guarantees any lover of northern Spanish wines a wonderful wine-finding trip. After exploring the geography of the region—complete with advice on getting around, finding the best hotels, and selecting great local cuisine—it discusses tours of the wine areas and explores the individual wines, from the exciting whites of Rias Baixas to the historic reds of Rioja. Handy hints throughout help you arrange visits to the finest producers and discover other places of interest nearby.

Editorial Review:

The gastronomic, financial, intellectual, aesthetic, and social pleasures of wine collecting often lead to the necessity to create and maintain a wine cellar. This down-to-earth guide to conceiving, building, and using one offers in-depth explanations of the whys and wherefores. The text explores such fundamentals as understanding ideal storage conditions, designing the cellar, and choosing the appropriate storage apparatus for a particular collection. Goldberg explains the principles of organization (by grape, region, producer, and vintage, among others), and offers guidance on stocking cellar by acquiring bottles from merchants, wineries, mail order, and auction. He also suggests defining goals, such as short-term drinking or investment for resale, in order to plan the best wine cellar possible for each individual's needs. The book is accompanied by a CD with specially designed software to help you record and keep track of your wine collection. Both the CD and the book are packaged in a beautiful binder with paper included on which to print a restaurant-quality wine list.

Simply awesome. I know nothing about wine other than what I think tastes good. This book has helped guide me on what to buy and when to drink it in a very clear/easy to understand way.

    Editorial Review:

Hugh Johnson has won a legion of fans with his keen ability to make the sometimes complex topic of wine wonderfully lucid—and every year, his popular pocket guide is a bestseller. That makes it number one in the market. Here, in it’s 30th anniversary year, he has completely revised and updated this classic, offering more current news than ever on over 6,000 wines, growers, and regions, along with up-to-the-minute vintage information, recommended wines (including budget options), and star ratings. With this book in hand, wine lovers won’t need anything else to help them select anything from a bottle for an everyday dinner to a prestige vintage for investment. A new section showcases Johnson’s special, personal choices, and there are plenty of quick-reference maps, charts, and fact boxes for a little extra guidance.

Performing for California wines the service that Hugh Johnson's and Oz Clarke's pocket guides do for the wines of the world, this guide has become an institution. The current volume lists more than 800 wineries, with detailed information and tasting notes on the wines of each

The Best 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best and most complete guide to West Coast wines. Unfortunately, no new edition since 1995. On the other hand, nothing that has come out in the past 10 years can approach it. If they put out a new edition it would be a must have for anyone who buys CA or Oregon wines, not to mention wine geeks.

    Editorial Review:

This essential guide to the wines and wineries of California--and the entire West Coast--has been freshly revised and expanded to include the latest available vintages, and details of many new wineries. The authors provide everything readers need to know, from the basics of winemaking to grape and wine varieties to harvest reports and reviews of more than 800 wineries.

    Editorial Review:

For everything there is a season, and in the world of wine the calendar is defined by bud break, fruit set, harvest, and the arrival of the latest edition of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book. Celebrating the sale of more than 7 million copies of editions spanning a quarter century, the 2002 publication provides an updated addition to the prestigious and prolific wine writer's popular series of pocket-sized reference books. With delineated chapters--some merely a page long--Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book: 2002 follows a standard format: wine trend prognostication, a brief description of the current vintage (here the 2000 harvest), a reexamination of 1999, glossary of grape types, and food and wine matches. The book's bulk is composed of an alphabetical listing of short entries--mostly wineries--subdivided within geographical chapters. Johnson can be stylish, even witty (a lively Vernaccia pairs well with a dish of grey mullet: not the one "on the heads of aging rock stars"), but aside from the opening few pages, there's a decidedly ghostwritten feel to the proceedings. Indeed, the acknowledgments list over 40 "kind friends," including several regionally based wine writers, for their "special knowledge," most notably of some smaller producers. But for someone of Hugh Johnson's stature, to allow, once again, in the 2002 edition the Syrah grape to be identified as identical to Petite Sirah--friends, kind or not, shouldn't let friends get away with that sort of thing. --Tony Mason
