Nice times with Julia 3 out of 5 stars.

This isn't a great book, but it was nice to read. A few little tidbits about Julia Child I hadn't read before and a few insights into what goes into making a cooking show.

book candy 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As others have written, this isn't a deep read. More it is like a fan journal. The author clearly adored Julia Child, and the adulation can get annoying. I read it during a few evenings on the Puget Sound, sipping some decent wine. While the book isn't much, what I took from it is much. Julia Child found her passion in life and seized on it. While most of us don't come from the privilages that she did, the book so clearly inspires us all to make the most what we have to give. When I read the book I thought it a bit stupid, but as the weeks go by I find myself built up by the portrait of Julia Child as this incredible human being, who never said no. For anyone feeling lost this is a tonic.

Editorial Review:

You’ll love this intimate portrait of the inimitable Julia Child by Nancy Verde Barr, her executive chef and friend for twenty-four years. Brimming with anecdotes, memorabilia, and snapshots, Backstage with Julia conveys Julia’s generosity, her boundless energy, and her love of food and life. This loving memoir celebrates the adventurous, unassuming essence of the chef who seasoned American palates and heightened our appreciation of food.

Editorial Review:

COFFEE TRADER and historian Antony Wild delivers a rollicking history of the most valuable legally traded commodity in the world after oil--and an industry that employs one hundred million people throughout the world. From obscure beginnings in East Africa in the fifteenth century as a stimulant in religious devotion, coffee became an imperial commodity, produced by poor tropical countries and consumed by rich temperate ones. Through the centuries, the influence of coffee on the rise of capitalism and its institutions has been enormous. Revolutions were once hatched in coffeehouses, commercial alliances forged, secret societies formed, and politics and art endlessly debated. Today, while coffee chains spread like wildfire, coffee-producing countries are in crisis: with prices at a historic low, they are plagued by unprecedented unemployment, abandoned farms, enforced migration, and massive social disruption. Bridging the gap between coffee's dismal colonial past and its perilous corporate present, "Coffee reveals the shocking exploitation that has always lurked at the heart of the industry.

Editorial Review:

In the last twenty-five years alone, the range of fruits and vegetables, even grains, that is available at most local markets has changed dramatically. Over the last 10,000 years, that change is almost unimaginable. This groundbreaking new work, from the editor of the highly regarded Cambridge World History of Food, examines the exploding global palate. It begins with the transition from foraging to farming that got underway some 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, then examines subsequent transitions in Egypt, Africa south of the Sahara, China, southeast Asia, the Indus Valley Oceanic, Europe, and the Americas. It ends with chapters on genetically modified foods, the fast food industry, the nutritional ailments people have suffered from, famine, the obesity epidemic, and a look at the future on the food front. Food, at its most basic, fuels the human body. At its most refined, food has been elevated to a position of fine art. The path food has taken through history is a fairly straightforward one; the space which it occupies today could not be more fraught. This sweeping narrative covers both ends of the spectrum, reminding us to be grateful for and delighted in a grain of wheat, as well as making us aware of the many questions that remain unanswered about what lies ahead. Did you know. . .
- That beans were likely an agricultural mistake?
- That cheese making was originated in Iran over 6000 years ago?
- That pepper was once worth its weight in gold?
- That sugar is the world s best-selling food, surpassing even wheat?
- That Winston Churchill asserted, in 1942, that tea was more important to his troops than ammunition?
- That chili con carne is one of the earliest examples of food globalization?
- That, by 1880, virtually every major city in America had a Chinese restaurant?
- That white bread was once considered too nutritious?
Kenneth Kiple reveals these facts and more within A Moveable Feast.

Over the past thirty years, The Black Dog Tavern has grown from a small island haunt to a nationally renowned restaurant. Its astonishingly successful local store and nationwide mail order business have spread the famous black lab logo around the world. No trip to the Vineyard, by presidents, movie stars, or ordinary folk, is complete without a meal at The Black Dog. Until now there has been no way to enjoy such Black Dog classics as a Huey, Louie, Andouille Omelet; Quahog or Fish Chowder; or Fudge Bottom Pie without going to the Vineyard. With this imaginatively designed and illustrated book, anyone can reproduce this wonderfully flavorful food at home and enjoy a taste of summer on the Vineyard anytime. -- The Black Dog is legendary. Nearly everyone who visits the Vineyard eats at The Black Dog Tavern and buys a hat, T-shirt, or other souvenir. -- There is a huge market of Black Dog fans: One million copies of the catalog are sent each year only to people who request it. -- This is the first of three Black Dog cookbooks that Little, Brown will publish.

Bring them back...Schrafft's, of course! Brings back memories of Aunt Lillian and Mary Jane shoes!

When everyone ate at Schraffts 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a native NYer, it was an easy, fun, jogging of memory, having had lunch there many times in the 1950s,after seeing my DDS on E 57th ST or when I worked in the Chrysler building.

As a book, it was extremely "lightweight",not very well written, easy to put aside and TOO MANY RECIPES.I will, however. send it to our daughter, who had a summer job there & wore that black and white uniform and told us tales about the customers. So it was a pleasant little tome, but not one I'd recommend.Sorry !

Editorial Review:

When Everybody Ate at Schrafft's is a lavishly illustrated book about the Schrafft's restaurant empire and the era in which it thrived. In the New York area alone, more than 50 stores (as they were called) dotted the urban landscape. Celebrities were frequent customers and sometimes employees, women lunched there, and businessmen conferred over cocktails. And as you'll see, everybody who ate at Schrafft's has a story to tell.

Reading and Remembering Why I'm an Armchair Traveler 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

What a great opportunity to learn more about the Paris I love, and French food which I do not prepare at home. I wait for my trips. I am not intimidated with the snooty waiters, as I did my "homework." I'm prepared to ask questions about loaves and wine and anything else. The set-up of the chapters was easy reading, too. I trusted the writers. I discovered more secrets in Paris via their investigations and risky ventures. I didn't have to suffer the frustrations of getting lost on the metro nor the pains of tusseling with those Parisian cabbies. I especially enjoyed the trips to the new and modern Paris as described by Paul Goldberger. Do you want to loaf with a loaf, drink a bottle away from the bottlenecks? Read this book. Also, I will read other books in the Modern Library Food series based on my enjoyment of Ruth Reichl choices.

Editorial Review:

For sixty years the best food writers have been sending dispatches from Paris to Gourmet. At once unique and universal, these essays by Joseph Wechsberg, Naomi Barry, and Diane Johnson, among others, present tantalizing glimpses of culinary life in the world capital of love and food.
From unforgettable vignettes of resourceful chefs feeding hungry Parisians after World War II to the birth and rise of nouvelle cuisine–it’s all here: the old-time bourgeois dinners, the tastemakers, the hero-chefs, and, of course, Paris in all its charm, arrogance, and splendid refinement.

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking culinary work of extraordinary depth and scope that spans more than one thousand years of history, A Mediterranean Feast tells the sweeping story of the birth of the venerated and diverse cuisines of the Mediterranean. Author Clifford A. Wright weaves together historical and culinary strands from Moorish Spain to North Africa, from coastal France to the Balearic Islands, from Sicily and the kingdoms of Italy to Greece, the Balkan coast, Turkey, and the Near East.

The evolution of these cuisines is not simply the story of farming, herding, and fishing; rather, the story encompasses wars and plagues, political intrigue and pirates, the Silk Road and the discovery of the New World, the rise of capitalism and the birth of city-states, the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition, and the obsession with spices. The ebb and flow of empires, the movement of populations from country to city, and religion have all played a determining role in making each of these cuisines unique.

In A Mediterranean Feast, Wright also shows how the cuisines of the Mediterranean have been indelibly stamped with the uncompromising geography and climate of the area and a past marked by both unrelenting poverty and outrageous wealth. The book's more than five hundred contemporary recipes (which have been adapted for today's kitchen) are the end point of centuries of evolution and show the full range of culinary ingenuity and indulgence, from the peasant kitchen to the merchant pantry. They also illustrate the migration of local culinary predilections, tastes for food and methods of preparation carried from home to new lands and back by conquerors, seafarers, soldiers, merchants, and religious pilgrims.

A Mediterranean Feast includes fourteen original maps of the contemporary and historical Mediterranean, a guide to the Mediterranean pantry, food products resources, a complete bibliography, and a recipe and general index, in addition to a pronunciation key. An astonishing accomplishment of culinary and historical research and detective work in eight languages, A Mediterranean Feast is required--and intriguing--reading for any cook, armchair or otherwise.

Editorial Review:

The Medieval Kitchen is a delightful work in which historians Odile Redon, Françoise Sabban, and Silvano Serventi rescue from dark obscurity the glorious cuisine of the Middle Ages. Medieval gastronomy turns out to have been superb—a wonderful mélange of flavor, aroma, and color. Expertly reconstructed from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century sources and carefully adapted to suit the modern kitchen, these recipes present a veritable feast. The Medieval Kitchen vividly depicts the context and tradition of authentic medieval cookery.

"This book is a delight. It is not often that one has the privilege of working from a text this detailed and easy to use. It is living history, able to be practiced by novice and master alike, practical history which can be carried out in our own homes by those of us living in modern times."—Wanda Oram Miles, The Medieval Review

"The Medieval Kitchen, like other classic cookbooks, makes compulsive reading as well as providing a practical collection of recipes."—Heather O'Donoghue, Times Literary Supplement

Great Information for the beginner 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

If you're new to the topic of tea than Tea: The Drink that Changed the World by Laura Martin is the book for you. Beyond the expected coverage of how tea is consumed around the world the book includes a terrific load of basic information on the plant itself, how it is cultivated, managed, and harvested.

I'm well aware of the role tea has had in western history, especially in England and the U.S. I found the author's treatment of the role tea plays in virtually every major culture around the world very interesting. While not a long book, the coverage appears to me to be complete.

I found the rather extensive appendices at the end of the book to be particularly helpful. Tea and Health, Tea with Food, and Choice Teas from Around the World were very informative.

This book is loaded with great information.

Editorial Review:

Camellia sinensis, commonly known as tea, is grown in tea gardens and estates around the world. A simple beverage, served either hot or iced, tea has fascinated and driven us, calmed and awoken us, for well over two thousand years.

Tea: The Drink that Changed the World tells of the rich legends and history surrounding the spread of tea throughout Asia and the West, as well as its rise to the status of necessity in kitchens around the world. From the tea houses of China's Tang Dynasty (618-907), to fourteenth century tea ceremonies in Korea's Buddhist temples' to the tea plantations in Sri Lanka today, this book explores and illuminates tea and its intricate, compelling history.
