The innate attractiveness of the food -- the colors, textures, and shapes -- are captured in brilliant photographs that evoke the sunny, warm Mediterranean dime. Whether you make just a few dishes for informal entertaining, or create an entire meal of meze, Diane Kochilas makes it possible to bring the spirit of fun and sharingthe essence of meze throughout Greece and the Mediterranean -- to your own table at home.

I used the recipes for my birthday party when I turned 10. They were really good. All my friends liked them.

VERY CREATIVE--BUT EASY!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been looking for a book like this for ages--one that will make snacktime fun and involve my children in the making of it. They look forward to picking out a new recipe to try and we find that most of them are SO quick to make.

The PERFECT present for a child! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have a niece who was turning 8 and I really had no ideas for a birthday gift for her. I purchased this book for her and it was her favorite present. She can make many of the recipes by herself and the rest she is learning to do with the help of her mother...or me! What a great gift idea!

Not for non-professionals 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has wonderful photos; the food is dazzling and beautifully presented, but the execution is something else again. If you don't have at least some training, and (most importantly) don't have a slew of helpers, you would be well-advised to steer clear of actually attempting to make this stuff. The work involved will make you too tired to enjoy your own party.

Yes, you can make some things ahead and freeze them--but even then, it's hard for some of us to devote an entire weekend (or even an entire day) to cooking. The recipes I tried were both labor-intensive and very time-consuming. I picked up some great ideas for arranging prepared foods and fruit and veggie trays, and I will still enjoy this book as a reference for presenting food, but I doubt if I'll attempt to cook from it again. Whew!

The book is gorgeous! 3 out of 5 stars.

This is one of my favorite books to look at. The pictures are incredible and I have made a few of the appetizers which were fabulous. But as the other review said, most recipes require more knowledge than I have and I try never to make anything too close to guests arriving at my house...too much room to screw up. I think the book is great and I'm glad I own it but for the average person looking for easy-to-do recipes, this book isn't for her.

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Appetizers presents recipe suggestions for all major types of starters, from seafood appetizers to dips and finger food. Special chapters are dedicated to pork, chicken, beef, cheese and egg appetizers. Classics such as assorted canapes and sandwiches, cheese bites, chicken satay, deep-fried camembert, dolmades, guacamole, hummus bi tahini, marinated mushrooms and artichokes, mini-pizzas, mushrooms and blue cheese, oysters Rockefeller, piroshki, quiche and spring rolls appear next to unique recipes such as anchovy beignets, bacon rolls, caviar croutons, chicken and leek rolls, chicken pistachio pate, gingered fruit kebabs, salmon and avocado mousse and crispy almond squid.

From aioli and crudites to pickled vegetables and yakitori, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of starting a meal - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Editorial Review:

The countries that circle the Mediterranean share more than the sea's azure waters. They share a love of first courses -- tapas from Spain, hors d'oeuvres and entrees from France, Italy's antipasti and primi piatti, mezethes from Greece, and the meze of the Levant and North Africa. These small dishes reflect the region's extraordinary bounty, its reliance on seasonal produce, and its emphasis on straightforward preparation.

More than 220 recipes demonstrate both the unity and the variety of Mediterranean cuisine. Olive oil, garlic, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, onions, and fresh herbs are the foundation of all Mediterranean cooking. But what a tremendous range of flavors and textures emanate from those ingredients!

Often one brilliant idea is manipulated differently by each cuisine. Take flat bread: In Spain we find Coca de la Huerta, a summer vegetable flat bread from the Balearic Islands. France offers Provence's Pissaladiere, laced with anchovies, onions, and olives. You're probably familiar with Italy's great flat breads (like Focaccia con Gorgonzola e Pinoli), but have you ever tasted Lahmacun, a Turkish lamb and tomato pizza, spiced with cinnamon, allspice, and cloves?

The Mediterranean plays the same game with savory egg pies. You can't enter a tapas bar in Spain without being confronted by some sort of tortilla, the ubiquitous Spanish omelette that appears here with caramelized onions as Tortilla de Cebollas a la Andaluza. In the South of France an omelette might be stuffed with pistou (the French equivalent of Italian pesto), and in Italy you would find the Italian equivalent of the omelette the frittata -- made with roasted sweet peppers. In Greece, the egg has been transformed into a Sfoungato me Kolokithia Apagio, a baked omelette with rice, zucchini, leeks, feta, and mountain herbs. In Tunisia, echoes of the French occupation can be tasted in the ajja, a traditional omelette filled with Tunisia's own spicy merguez sausage.

For this authentic collection, Joanne Weir ate her way around the Mediterranean cajoling home cooks and restaurant chefs into surrendering their finest recipes. Throughout the book is a reverence for the Mediterranean practice of hanging out at the table with a glass of wine -- or sherry, or ouzo, or raki -- while nibbling on an assortment of delectable little dishes. Let From Tapas to Meze bring this gracious tradition into your home.

OK, but not what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I have been waiting for this book for several months, and was a little disappointed when I finally got it. It features 8 party ideas, such as Bongo Beat Bash and Island Luau. Each of these sections features several interesting cocktail and appetizer recepies, as well as related Shag artwork. All of this is OK but more than a bit sketchy. Except for a bare-bones introduction at the front of the book, there is nothing from the writer on how to throw these parties; even some basic fashion, decorating or organizational suggestions would have been good. I can plan a tiki party with the best of them, but it's still nice to consider other ideas.
Not bad overall, but also not a shining example of retro chic either.

Editorial Review:

In Shag Party, Adam Rocke and Shag, tiki culture's most acclaimed artist, have devised eight soirees, accompanying each with drink recipes and simple 1950s-era appetizers guaranteed to transform any lounge or bachelor pad into retro heaven. Each Shag-illustrated party revives the sophistication of postwar pop culture. Themes include Tiki Luau, Halloween Party, Bongo Beat, New Year’s Bash, South of the Border Samba, Las Vegas Night, Seduction for Two, and Night Club Night. Fans of the Mai Tai, Side Car, or Manhattan will find it hard to resist this pop art collector’s item.

Editorial Review:

Despite the abundance of lifestyle books on the market, none meet the entertaining needs of busy young adults. Many have both financial and personal independence, and along with this come the expectation to maintain, decorate, and entertain - all of the things their parents did - with far less time. It’s Just a Dinner Party simplifies and demystifies the art of throwing a dinner party and debunks the impossible standard and craft-focus aesthetic set by Martha Stewart and other style mavens. These twenty-something professional reveal straightforward and simple techniques for party planning, relaxed etiquette, bar and menu basics, and even a few reliable recipes for any occasion. Additionally, this book is uniquely couple-focused, rather than homemaker-focused; its essence is a "guest-centric" approach that stresses simplicity, grace, and a refreshingly genuine hospitality. Includes recipes for dining and cocktail, easy and elegant table settings, invitations, and entertainment tips.
