My Favorite Party Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The Party Recipes from the Charleston Junior League is my favorite cookbook. Of all the cookbooks I own I always buy the ones that have lots of pictures. I usually like to see what it looks like first before I make anything. This cookbook was the exception, as it does not have pictures of the food. I looked through the cookbook and immediately saw at least 30 recipes that I knew I wanted to make. I couldn't put it down, as there was such a collection of recipes that I always wanted to try. Whenever I need a recipe for a party or gathering, this cookbook is always the first one that I pick up.

I like the short comments with each recipe from the recipe contributor. I especially like the spiral binding as the book stays flat on the table while you are using it. The people of Charleston, South Carolina know how to throw a successful party. I'm glad they shared their most popular recipes in this book.

Recipe categories in the book:
Accoutrements: Nuts, Nibbles, and Beverages
Cold Dips and Spreads
Hot Dips and Spreads
Cold Hors d'Oeuvres
Hot Hors d'Oeuvres
Lowcountry Shrimp, Crab, and other Seafoods
Southwestern Favorites
Sandwiches and Baked Savories
Sit-Down Starters
Cookies, Cakes, and Confections for the Buffet Table

The third Charleston Junior League cookbook reveals more secrets of the city's legendary hospitality.

Not intimidating 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really loved this idea of a deck rather than a book because you can pull the one you're using, take it to the store and set it where you can read it during preparation. I had never made tapas before but after eating in a great tapas restaurant, La Boca, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I became interested in trying to prepare them.
I think the photos are beautiful and inspiring and the recipes simple enough for a tapas novice. All my cook friends are getting this deck for Christmas along with a nice bottle of Spanish olive oil.

Editorial Review:

Capture the spirit of Spanish cooking with these 50 delicious and fun recipes perfect for all occasions. Award-winning Spanish chef José Andrés shares his favorite flavors for classic tapas such as Lobster Paella, Manchego Cheese with Tomato Bread, and Asturian Chorizo Stewed Hard Cider, as well as inventive new dishes such as the Valencia Orange and Pomegranate Salad with Olive Oil and Sherry Vinegar. The recipes are printed on convenient tabbed cards that you can bring to the grocery store or prop up on the kitchen counter while you prepare an impressive mix of little plates to serve your family and friends.

creative for lunchbag 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My kids are very tired of the same lunchbags everyday, so this was a Godsend. They loved the variety and I loved not having to think every day what to put in their lunchbags! The recipies are very easy and fun to make. My kids love to prepare them with me. We go to the supermarket together and prepare some in anticipation. The color pictures help a lot, because you know what they are supposed to look like and they make it easier for my kids, so they can prepare them for themselves. The information is accurate and easy. I only wish it had more!!!

Editorial Review:

After a long day at school, kids need something to eat-and fast. Lunchtime was a long time ago, and dinner is hours away. Before your kids faint from hunger, take a look at this collection of wholesome finger foods and mini meals from FamilyFun magazine. Here you'll find quick-and-easy after-school snacks that kids and parents can make together. Not only do treats such as homemade tortilla strips, bagel critters, or munch mix take the edge off an end-of-the-school-day appetite but creating them is a great way for parents and kids to cook, eat, and, most important, spend time together.

A delicious book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Memories of lounging outside at Enrico's in San Francisco while watching the Saturday night crowds pass by in an endless conga line, or that night sitting at a small table with Bobby Short in New York City's Carlyle Café after he finished crooning his last set -- these memories, and the smell of fried olives or the taste of salty caviar on toast points, all of it comes tumbling back to me as I read through the pages of Kate Heyhoe's book. Those were the days -- and now they ARE the days -- as I can finally recreate those snacks with her tasty recipes -- while also enjoying her nostalgic anecdotes.

Editorial Review:

"This is not a book about how to mix drinks. It's about what to eat after the drinks are mixed, poured, or uncapped. These recipes are stress-free, easy, and meant to be made and eaten casually. Their appeal lies in their robust flavors, serving simplicity, and the way the recipes complement beverages. They're the same type of tasty nibbles found at all the best bars--and they can look and taste just as tempting, even when made at home."

Editorial Review:

From the award-winning authors of Bread In Half The Time comes a complete guide to close to a hundred European-style breads to bake with the indispensable aid of your bread machine.

Nothing smells quite as wonderful as bread baking in the oven. Nothing tastes quite as good as a thick slice of still-warm homemade bread. And nothing can be quite so intimidating or time-consuming as mixing, kneading, raising, and baking that bread. Until now!

With a bread machine to do all the hard work, and experts Linda West Eckhardt and Diana Collingwood Butts as guides, anyone can turn out a perfect sourdough, raisin pumpernickel, focaccia, or any one of almost a hundred other varieties of classic European breads. The trick is to use the machine for what it does best-mixing and kneading the dough that produces the loaves we all love so much. Then leave it in the machine to rise, shape it by hand, and bake it to perfection in the oven.

With Rustic European Breads From Your Bread Machine in hand, every home cook will become a master baker. Eckhardt and Butts provide not only an encyclopedic knowledge of their subject and foolproof step-by-step recipes, but also limitless, contagious enthusiasm. Their clear and thorough explanations will turn every home kitchen into an aromatic, soul- and appetite-satisfying European bakery.

A Campy, Kitschy Delight 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

By Bill Marsano. Trader Vic's Tiki Party!: Cocktails & Food to Share with Friends," by Stephen Siegelman, is perfect for retro theme parties. Trader Vic, with his famous rival Don the Beachcomber, ushered in the Tiki Bar Era of American partying, which centered mainly on the 1950s and 1960s (which of these two men actually invented the Mai Tai, signature drink of the epoch, remains in dispute--both claim it.) Those were days of restaurants blanketed with faux-Polynesian decor, when pupu platters were the rage and drinks came in bowls serving four or more and were decorated with paper umbrellas, which folks later learned to call parasols. Relive that glorious and joyously ridiculous time with this collection of tropical cocktails and food recipes for everything from finger food to entrees. The recipes are interesting, mostly pretty easy to make, and generally fun to eat or drink. The photos are very nice but the main appeal is that the recipes are clearly presented and easy to follow.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning writer on wines and spirits.

Editorial Review:

The tiki volcano is erupting all over again, and now Trader Vic, the legendary purveyor of Polynesian food, drinks and fantasy, wants to help us bring it all home. Step behind the bar and into the kitchen at Trader Vic's and learn how to create the kind of tiki magic that made the Trader famous. It's all here: recipes for 95 of the restaurant's best-loved tropical cocktails and after-dinner drinks along with more than 35 party-friendly food recipes.

I am a librarian and I read cookbooks for pleasure. Sure, I can see them at the library, but there are a few that I just have to own. This is one of them. This whole Williams=Sonoma series is wonderful. I love the illustrations. Sometimes it is like drooling without the calories. I recommend this!!!
