Tastes as good as it reads! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This is a fabulous book. I received it as a Christmas gift when it was first published. I read and re-read the recipes, and was frankly overwhelmed. Not by the recipes, but the pictures. So, I fantasized about making the foods. I didn't venture to attempt the recipes for several months.

I attended a reception at the Schomburg Center in NYC, and as I ate the great foods, I had a sense of dejavu. I thought, "Oh my goodness, these are the Martha recipes." I quickly asked a member of the wait staff for more info on the horsdouvres, and sure enough, they came from this book. After that, I went to the kitchen, and began cooking.

These are some of the most reliable recipes you will ever have. The instructions are perfect, and you too can create these marvelous dishes. To quote you know who, "It's a good thing."

P.S. I loaned my book out, and never got it back. I am ordering a new one from Amazon.com.

Editorial Review:

Next time you party, try a dip. Or two. Or three. Rick Rodgers, renowned cooking teacher and cookbook author shares 95 of his favorite dip recipes in his new book, Dip It!

Of course there's the classic onion soup mix, but why not make Rick's updated recipe with onions? For a Super Bowl or tailgating party, you'll score big with bowls of tortilla chips served up with meaty Hot Beef and Pinto Bean Chili Dip.

There are plenty of vegetarian spreads, too. Scoop wedges of pita into Moroccan Eggplant and Tomato Dip. The Faux Cheese Fondue will be a hit with cheese lovers. Rick also offers plenty of lighter dips such as the Two-Alarm Salsa or Three-Bean Salsa. Need an elegant dip for a special occasion? Try the Pesto Mascarpone or the silky smooth Double Salmon Dip. And many of these dips do double duty -- use them to bring a little something extra to your sand-wiches.

And what's homemade dip without crunchy, crispy dippers? There are recipes for homemade versions of Potato Chips, Herbed Breadsticks, Tortilla Chips, and much more. Also included is a complete list of vegetable dippers that will add snap and color to your table. Rick also offers lots of helpful entertaining tips from do-ahead recipes to creative dip holders.

So have a party. Take a dip with Dip It!

Savory Bacon & Onion Tartlets, flaky Filo Triangles with Spinach & Feta, crunchy Bruschetta with Olives & Roasted Peppers -- these are among the tantalizing hors d'oeuvre recipes you will soon master with this book.

Williams-Sonoma Mastering Hors d'Oeuvres is a complete cooking course in a single volume. The opening describes various types of finger food and appetizers, including dips and spreads and cold and hot hors d'oeuvres, and the ingredients you need to make them. You will also learn how to cook, season, and serve hors d'oeuvres, from readying your mise en place to adding sophisticated finishing touches.

Basic recipes and key techniques then illustrate dozens of indispensable culinary building blocks, such as how to make a pastry dough for tartlets or how to shuck an oyster. Troubleshooting tips show you what can go wrong and how to fix it without having to start all over again. Next the master recipes lead you step-by-step, with friendly text and instructive photographs, through every stage of preparation. These recipes include helpful advice other cookbooks assume you already know, and explain how to taste and season food as you go -- one of the most valuable kitchen secrets any cook can learn. The shorter recipes and variations in each chapter encourage you to continue practicing your newfound skills, building your repertory and your confidence at the same time. Finally, a guide to equipment and a glossary of ingredients round out your comprehensive hors d'oeuvre-making course.

In these pages, you will find more than fifty classic recipes that tell you, in both pictures and words, how every dish you cook should look and taste from beginning to end. Whether you are an aspiring novice or an accomplished home cook, Mastering Hors d'Oeuvres will help you make every time you entertain a special occasion.

Lovely pictures, but not practical for this family 2 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I am disagreeing with most reviews, if you do not like goat cheese, don't buy this. If you have no access to buying wild mushrooms, don't buy this. If you don't like tuna, salmon or lamb, don't buy this. I was looking for a more practical appetizer book with common things I buy each week at the grocery, many recipes with goat cheese, caviar, salmon, tuna, and lamb just don't fit my lifestyle or my budget. If you like eggplant, oysters, lamb and swordfish recipes then go for it!

Delicious!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Whether you're hosting a cocktail party or an intimate dinner, Carpenter and Sandison deliver maximum flavor in minimum time.

Some recipes aren't quite there yet 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I've owned this book for over a year and have used it when planning for a few parties. Some of the recipes are excellent, but others just don't taste good. I am an avid cook, and have had to improvise a number of times when the finished recipe was completed because the appetizer was close to tasteless (example: the dipping sauce for the Rockin Rubens as well as the Rockin Ruben breadsticks themselves; Dab a Crab was dab-a-boring).

I have found that I use Cocktail Food now more for inspiration than to follow the actual recipes. I too found the recipe names a little too cute, so most of the time my appetizers go incognito when people ask about the actual names.

Editorial Review:

The clink of glasses, the popping of corks, the spirited chatter of good friends-what more does an impromptu get-together need? Why, fabulous snacks, of course! With Cocktail Food, you can kiss those boring raw veggies goodbye because the best-selling authors of Smoothies and Wraps are whipping up bite-size delights like Shrimply Delish, Wonton Wonders, and Chive Talkin' Scallops. Voil ! A humdrum happy hour turns into a glamorous soir e. Cocktail Food takes the jitters out of entertaining with simple yet stylish recipes, plus great party-planning tips and fun theme ideas from Highball Sprees to Frozen F'tes. Let the good times roll!

Fine Collection 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have made a number of dips from this book, and I'm always satisfied. The recipes are easy to follow, and the dips seem to always receive rave reviews. The dips are basic enough, but also usually have a unique twist that satifies. If you need to make a dip, then you should pick up this little gem of a book!

Too Far Out 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was not real impressed with this cookbook, a little too far out for my taste. I think I wanted something more basic. There are some dips that I'll probably make and some I might be willing to try. The book has a pretty good section on dippers. I think there should have been a section for salads as some of the recipes reminded me more of a salad. If I had looked through this book before buying, even at the bargain I got on it, I would have passed this one up.

Editorial Review:

Diane Morgan -- the diva of dips and champion of chips -- has created more than 50 recipes for everyone's dipping and dunking party favorites. Guests will make a beeline for lip-buzzing salsas scooped up with crispy tortilla triangles. Onion dip made from scratch is even better with homemade potato chips. And how about crunchy Parmesan Breadsticks for dunking into a butternut squash with creme fraiche? Simple "Dip Do-Aheads" make prep work a snap, while dip tips and easy chip-making techniques make it easier -- and tastier -- than taking a trip to the market for store-bought. Let the party begin with Delicious Dips!

Great cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

In "The Ultimate Cooking with 4 Ingredients" author Jean Coates treats the reader to a plethora of simple, yet tasty, recipes. This is a particularly great cookbook for those with little cooking experience or for someone who wants to put together a balanced, healthy, home cooked meal without a lot of fuss. The instructions for preparation of each dish could not be easier. If you are used to the books with three or four paragraphs of preparation instructions you will be pleasantly surprised to find that these recipes can all be completed with only three to four simple steps.

I tried a few recipes and found that among my favorites were Potatoes Supreme, Hawaiian Pork, and Cola Chicken. Based on the ingredients list the Cola Chicken sounded so unlikely to taste good that I just had to try it and it turned out great. I also liked the way that Coates broke down the main dishes into the categories of chicken, beef, pork, and seafood instead of lumping them all together under the "Main Dishes" category like most cookbooks do.

The recipes often take advantage of mixes like a box cake mix or stuffing mix in order to keep the ingredients list down to four. But for the new cook or one who does not have a lot of time or want a lot of fuss making dinner it meets all the important requirements - quick and easy to prepare, goof-proof, minimal cleanup, and tasty. This is a highly recommended read and especially so for the novice cook or the hurried family cook or the college bound student.

Editorial Review:

No time to cook? Fast and easy 4-ingredient recipes make family meals and entertaining a breeze. More than 800 easy recipes help you serve up delicious food every time - with just 4 ingredients in each recipe. Includes simple appetizers, main dishes, salads, unique desserts and much more. Great for tight budgets, too! Don't miss the Lemonade Chicken, Tropical Mango Salad, Chocolate Amaretto Pie, Sweet and Savory Pork Chops, Butterscotch Crunchies and more.

Anyone that says anything negative about this little book has no taste!
This is probably my favorite recipe book to date. I usually try 2-3 recipes out of a book. If none are good, I get rid of the book, believing the author has no(culinary)taste. I have yet to find a bad recipe in this book! And they are all easy enough for a novice!
I look forward to all books that are published by Sally Sampson!!

This book is great. The recipes are easy to follow and they don't require too many ingredients.

I made several dishes from this book for a recent "Girls night out" and by the end of the night everyone was asking for the title of the book to purchase it. I'm a novice at cooking, so these dishes really made me look good.

Editorial Review:

Tapas are the legendary bar snacks from Spain -- a mouthful of magic, prepared with patience and passion. Tapas, by Julz Beresford, includes many authentic examples for you to make at home. Try Classics such as Patatas Bravas (potatoes in tomato salsa) or the legendary Tortilla Espanola (Spanish omelet), Champinones Rellenos (mushrooms stuffed with meat), or Gazpacho Soup -- simple but refreshing. Try Meat and Poultry-based snacks such as Albondigas (meat balls with tomatoes) and Chorizo al Vino (chorizo in red wine) -- or Fish and Seafood examples such as Almejas a la Marinera (clams in white wine, tomato, and saffron sauce) or Mejillones Rellenos (fried mussels with ham). Vegetables in tapas are heaven for vegetarians. They include Pimientos Picantes (marinated bell peppers) and delicious Delicias de Queso (cheese balls). Tapas make perfect party food, washed down with a chilled fino sherry, a glass of beer, or wine. They're great as snacks to serve with cocktails, or for a light lun
