Best little book on coffee, ever 5 out of 5 stars.

This isn't only a book on coffee, it's a fine essay on the coffee ceremony of the Middle East. Fragrant with memory and wonderful descriptions of exotic places, it's a fun read as well as informative--just a lovely, little book.

But the real worth of this book is the listing of coffee varietals, from Abyssinian (I mean Ethiopian, but that doesn't begin with "a") to Zaire. Roden's description of the flavor of these different coffees is surprisingly accurate; we had a Costa Rican brew and checked it against her listing and found it was right on the money. If you are tempted to try a new variety at your local roaster and don't know what "saucy, yet mild" means in terms of flavor, you should refer to Roden's book instead.

There are also recipes for coffee-flavored desserts and little "to be served with the demitasse" sweets like apricot balls stuffed with pistachios. Hard to resist. So, don't.

Donna Leahy has done something few cookbook authors do: write a book that's not just a collection of terrific recipes, but a beautifully written, witty and touching story about following a dream. As a result of the book, my wife and I not only make her recipes at home, but actually went to their inn and enjoyed a deliciously romantic weekend in all aspects. Donna, and her husband, Bob, are the consumate hosts. I cannot recommend this book (and their inn) highly enough.

I LOVE to bake and am very good at it. But apparently the recipes in this book are only for experienced biscuit makers! I suppose they want you to "guess" how to make them as they are NOT the exact measurements of ingredients and the instructions must have mistakes everywhere...for example, one biscuit recipe calls for 1 CUP of half-half, then tells you in the instructions to only use 1/2 Cup half-half, then nowhere later in the recipe is there any other use for the rest of it...and at that stage, if you followed to only include the 1/2 cup instead of full cup, then your dough does not turn out correctly..I even tried the recipe 3 times in a row one afternoon because I was so aggravated with it....are they setting you up for failure so that their beloved biscuit recipes are not copied exactly? I certainly would never purchase this book unless you are ready to "tweak" everything you make!

Most of McNair's recent books feature the photo-on-each-page format with gorgeous photos by Patricia Brabant. Not so this one. It's still nice, but if, like me, you really enjoy seeing the amazing presentation of attactive food coordinated with lush garnishes and beautiful china/linens/silver, then this book may dissappoint.

And as with all of McNair's recipes, if you're watching your fat or cholesterol, there's not a lot here for you unless you're prepared to do some heavy modification.

Great little book. Lots of recipes and pictures. Everything I have made so far has been excellent.
