Not Much Cookin' Here 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a cute little thing, but if you really want an extraordinary Wizard of Oz cookbook, you'd be better off finding 'Cooking in Oz' by Elaine Willingham and Steve Cox. Loads of pictures and celebrity recipes, info on L. Frank Baum, trivia and great stuff for all of us who love Oz and Baum.

A Neat Little Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A neat little cookbook sure to please those who like to collect cookbooks or Oz. Easy to follow recipes named appropriately with the film in mind are studded with excepts from the film.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by the whimsical movie, The Wizard of Oz Cookbook begins with a brief stop in Kansas for some of Aunt Em's heartland breakfast fare and then soars over the rainbow to fantasy food in Oz--Emerald Castle Cake, Wicked Witch's Brew, and Yellow Brickle Brownies, to name a few. 20 illustrations.

Editorial Review:

Bradley Ogden is one of the young chefs who have changed the way America eats. His savory, classic fare with a sophisticated twist lends itself to home cooking, and in this, his first book, he shares an inspiring repertoire of more than 250 recipes for everyday meals and special feasts.

Here are hearty and healthy waffles, griddle-cakes, omelettes, muffins, breads, and biscuits to start a weekday right or to grace a leisurely Sunday brunch. (Don't miss Ogden's signature Rich Hot Chocolate with Bitter Chocolate Cream.)

For lunch and dinner, there are appetizers, entrees, and accompaniments to pair in the felicitous combinations that Ogden suggests -- or as you please. An invigorating Chilled Fresh Tomato Soup with Pepper Relish or a creamy but light Shellfish Chowder can launch an elegant menu or crown a simple one; likewise the array of salads, such as an unusual spicy Black Bean Salad or an elegant Seafood Salad with Blue Lake Beans and Sweet Corn, dressed with a delicate Saffron Vinaigrette. Appetizers, too, play a versatile role; tender Shrimp and Corn Fritters, for example, makes a succulent starter that doubles as a garnish for grilled fish.

With entrees, as elsewhere, the emphasis is on freshness above all, and the accents are at once traditional and inventive, international and down-home. There's the Mediterranean ease of Baked Red Snapper with Tomatoes, Peppers, and Onions; an earthy Roast Pork Shoulder with White Beans, Smoked Bacon, and Kale; and Ogden's version of Old-Fashioned Pot Roast with Herb Dumplings that goes his own mother's one better.

Desserts, of course, are an American forte, and Ogden has captured -- and reinterpreted for a grown-up palate -- the soul-satisfying goodness of the cobblers, crisps, puddings, and pies we loved as children.

Here is the best of contemporary American cooking, from the best of contemporary American cooks, in an original, inviting collection that's destined to become a culinary classic.

Not enough information 1 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

I was very disappointed in this book. Not enough sourdough starters for the average cook. For instance, "Peach Leaf Starter", "Hop Starter", etc. The book was not worth the price. Unless you want unusual recipe's, don't get this book.

NOT TRUE (pure) SOURDOUGH 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Bad title.
The recipes within are not true (pure) sourdough. They all, but one, contain lots of dry yeast.
There are no pure rye or wheat starter recipes given nor are they even mentioned let alone discussed
Her starters are: Beer, Hop, Ginger beer, Peach leaf, raw potato, cooked potato.
Recipes are for MASSIVE amounts...4 to 6 1lb. loaves. Impractical, for me anyway.
Lots of fats and eggs (4 to 13!).
A few ingredients I've never heard of nor seen in any store, such as maple syrup cheese, maple-honey syrup, hickory smoked cornmeal, spiced peaches, rice polish.
Recipes just weren't appealing.
Also this is an old book. 1967, 1983

Only recommended if:
You have 6+ kids who all eat sandwiches everyday, you have no fear of high fat and cholesterol and aren't looking for, nor care to learn about, pure sourdough startes/recipes/methods.

If you are looking for a great bread book, which covers pure sourdough as well as yeast spiked, and is up to the minute on techniques in fermentation etc to bring out the best in the flour and other ingredients get The Bread Baker's Apprentice By Peter Reinhart. I've made 10 different breads from it and they've all turned out terrific.

Editorial Review:

Expert baker provides complete breadmaking instructions, as well as 104 kitchen-tested recipes for starters and breads and cakes utilizing starters. Alaskan sourdough pancakes, pineapple bran bread, Polish babka, many more. Sources of Supply. Bibliography. Index. 25 black-and-white illustrations.

Williams-Sonoma Cookbooks Are Great! 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is my third Williams-Sonoma cookbook. All the recipes are easy to follow with simple ingredients, nothing too exotic. The glossary is also very helpful. The book is not too full as to be overwhelming, but just the right amount with carefully selected dishes. Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful photo, so you have an idea of how your dish should look like...sort of. I just love all the recipes! I made the coffee cake, and it came out deeeelicious!

I found this book to be quite terrific. 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I've made quite a few of the dishes in the book. The authors were able to put together a great combination of dishes that are festive, elegant and definitely tasty. Yet, the recipies don't take much time and aren't complicated. For a novice cook like myself, I found this a perfect way to have fun in the kitchen and have friends over.

Nice variety 4 out of 5 stars.

I'd really give this more like 4.5 stars. I've had this cookbook for years, and it has a nice variety of brunch dishes, from pancakes and eggs to cereals and salads. The breakfast polenta is delicious.

Editorial Review:

On the west side of 1,000-foot-high Heceta Head, 205 feet above the ocean, the 1894 Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the icons of Oregon, the most-photographed lighthouse on the West Coast. Heceta Head entered a new era in 1995, when Mike and Carol Korgan, both certified executive chefs, came to Heceta Head to revitalize the Keepers House and make it a welcoming home. The seven course breakfast was created with this ideal in mind. A blend of inspired food and good conversation is a recipe for true Victorian living.

Simple and Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for people who like wholesome foods but don't necessarily have a lot of time. The ingredients used by most of the recipes are those commonly found in most kitchens and the preparation steps are easy to follow. I have used recipes from most of the different sections of the book and have been pleased with all of them. To me the test of a cookbook is if I try three recipes and they don't turn out then I pass on the book to someone else. With this book I pass on the recipes... The zucchini patties and the chocolate zucchini bread are great . My kids make the apple crisp themselves. The recipes are also easy to modify to your own taste. I have even substituted soy products, low fat alternatives and different flours in some of the recipes with good results. Some of the recipes (overnight french toast) can even be put together the night before and cooked the following morning. I have even called some of the B&Bs to ask about a particular recipe. A great addition to your cookbook library.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! 1 out of 5 stars.
22 of 38 people found this review helpful.

...I was so disgusted by this book I felt compelled to warn others.

All of the yeast breads are the same basic recipe. For example, the recipes for Bran Bread, Cinnamon Bread, and Dill Onion Bread differ only in that one has added bran, one has added cinnamon, and one has added dill and onion. I made the Garlic Parmesan Bread using the exact ingredients she lists, no substitutions, and it was one of the foulest tasting and textured foods I've ever put in my mouth. I could not even force myself to finish a full piece of the bread; I felt like I was trying to eat a sponge...P>On a side note, Morris Press Cookbooks really needs to hire a competent copy editor.

Editorial Review:

After completing " Baking Low Carb" I found that a lot of people loved the bread recipe and wanted more of the same so that is how "Bread & Breakfast" came to be developed. Until I started testing recipes, I didn't realized how much I missed having bread for those occasional sandwich meals or for breakfast. I was in heaven when I figured out the Cinnamon Rolls.

This new book contains all new recipes including yeast bread and rolls, quick breads, hot cereal, eggs and pancakes. Some of the recipes included are: Garlic Bread, Wheat Bread, Bran Bread, Cinnamon Bread, Oat Nut Bread, Rhubarb Kuchen, Peachy Cream Cinnamon Rolls, Dinner Rolls, Apple Bran Muffins, Carrot Loaf, Peanut Butter Coffee Cake, Biscuits, Caraway Rye Crackers, Bran Cereal, Mexican Oven Omelet and many more.
