Go For it! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I've had this book for awhile, and finally decided to try it out. I followed the recipe for Beef Stew with Mushrooms, Bacon, and Pearl Onions ( and yes I tweaked it some, cause I can...), and it still came out great.

This book offers sensible information about the qualities that make a stew a stew. It offers a general format for making a stew, and I found the recipes to be flexible. I added some extras to the above recipe, and still enjoyed my end-product very much.

I initially made this purchase, because of the quality of product and information that Cook's Illustrated has provided me over the years. I find that the information is precise and simple enough to improve anyone's cooking level. C.I. will help you simplify the choices made in purchasing items ranging from cookware and appliances, to cookbooks and various food items/products. Thank you.

Editorial Review:

Stews have been around almost as long as cooking itself. Every culture has developed its own stews, and every cook in each culture has his or her own ideas about what a stew should be. Satisfying, nutritious, easy to prepare--and prepare in advance--stews never go out of style. Savory Stews is your guide to these mouthwatering one-pot meals, a delectable collection of stews from all over the world.
Created by restaurateur and cookbook author Jacques Burdick, these one hundred recipes include braises, ragouts, guly...s, hot pots, and more, for every occasion and every palate. You'll find comforting classics like hearty Chicken and Dumplings, spicy Louisiana Chicken Gumbo, hot Texas chili, and creamy Clam Chowder; sophisticated fare such as rich Romanian Apricot Chicken, aromatic Trastevere Beef Stew, and summery Shrimp and Black Bean Bisque; and unusual fruit and vegetable dishes, including Venetian Rice and Green Peas, and Tangy Quince and Citrus Compote. You'll also learn to prepare the broths and stocks that are the mainstays of stew cooking.
Whether you are looking for an elegant centerpiece for your next dinner party or a comforting meal for an evening at home, you'll find it here. Savory Stews is a new and delightful twist on cookery that has been around forever, with good reason--add warm bread, a crisp salad, and dinner is served!
"Jacques Burdick, long recognized as a master storyteller, now joins the ranks of master chefs. This is a creative collection of savory and sweet stews, gloriously enhanced by Burdick's fact-filled, colorful recollections of travels and tables. This book elevates stew to a higher level and will motivate even the most reluctant cook to take out the old stew pot."
--Anne Casale
Author of Lean Italian Cooking
"There are other cookbooks paying various tributes to the virtues of stew; none I know, however, is both as beguilingly inspiring and just plain helpful as Jacques Burdick's savory guide."

This cookbook hardly gets put back on the shelf--we're always looking for something else to make in it. Every sandwich we've made has been so good they taste like we've ordered out. This is a great cookbook.

Excellent flavors, inspiring recipes, simplicity with style 5 out of 5 stars.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It contains recipes which soothe the soul (soups) and satisfies the palate. The recipes are easy to follow and don't require hours in the kitchen.

Looks like it's unanimous, so far. 5 out of 5 stars.

Having decided how I would review this cookbook, I then read the other three reviews already here. Amazing that we all came away with the same impression: marvelous stuff here, not easy but delicious. I first tried the Fall Squash Soup with Chorizo and Spicy Cinammon Croutons, and it was a knockout dish. Everyone just marveled at its layers of flavor, so well blended. This is truly a beautiful book, and the regulars at her restaurant for lunch are blessed.

Southwest Cooking Made Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Once again Judy Walker has authored a cookbook that has plain, easy directions and the receipes don't use too many ingredients. Each receipe is labeled as Don't Miss, Second Time Around, Quick and Easy, Slow Cooker Family Favorite, Entertaining, etc. Alternative methods of cooking are sometimes included. Those not living in the SW will appreciate receipes for sauces and seasonings!

Mouthwatering recipes that you will use over and over! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the kind of cookbook I like to get my hands on. Indeed, the team of Judy Walker and Kim MacEachern have created another gem. Vivid photography will make your mouth water and you will not want to wait for cooler weather to prepare these tempting culinary delights. Desert Fish Soup, Cast Iron Pot Brown Stew, Winter Squash Stew, Skillet Enchiladas, Easy Chicken Pot Pie (which is a delectable "no-brainer"), Jalapeno Blue-Corn Muffins and my personal favorite, Lentil Lime Soup, are among the tasty choices this very "hands on" cookbook offers. I suggest you purchase two,(like I did) so you have a "pretty copy for your kitchen" as you will have the other book's spine split and the pages stained from constant use.

Not a Soupcon but a full ladle 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

120 soup recipes, each illustrated in color with three photos of the steps of preparation, and one large photo of each finished recipe are featured by this latest book by Carole Clements. Her 6 years of training in Paris with Simone Beck, (the mentor of Julia Child), comes into play with her thoughtful enumerations of alternative vegetables and seasonings, and insistence on fresh ingredients. I enjoy the wholesome goodness and rich taste of soups, but feel the need to add a continental touch to a normally commplace item. I feel this exhaustive treatment by a La Varenne seasoned chef, offers a clear map to this objective. I find it an exciting and important addition to my recipe bookshelf

Probably no one will have the last word in soup, but this comes close..Leland Kreid

The flavors and textures incorporated are vast and unusual, from silky spinach soup and curried courgette soup to trout or salmon consommé. Honking and wheezing? Plumbing all messed up? Change of seasons got you down? Need a little pick-me-up?

Pat Willard has just the ticket to get you back on track.  While poring over weathered, vintage cookbooks, Pat found a treasure trove of recipes from the days when ailing family members were cared for at home, and everyday aches, pains, and complaints were dealt with by turning to the kitchen pantry.  With a style reminiscent of M.F.K.  Fisher and Laurie Colwin, and a tone as soothing as Pat's suggestions, A Soothing Broth includes recipes for homemade broths, tonics, juices, puddings, and teas.

If a sore throat has you croaking like a frog, relieve the pain with a vinegar and cayenne pepper beverage.  If you've overdone it at the gym, soak those aching muscles in a warm bath with some ginger and vinegar.  A paste of wheat germ and honey will relieve the itching and take down the swelling of that nasty bee sting.

You've got a cupboard full of cures in your kitchen, and A Soothing Broth shows you how to use them.

A convenient collection of doable dishes, but not much new here, and most of the recipes are on the cautious side. I would recommend this to novice cooks just beginning their libraries, but don't find much for the experienced cook.

It Hurts So Good! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I own several so called spicy cookbooks and this one lives up to it's name and is by far my favorite one. It's chok'ful of delicious one page recipes from around the globe. Great muligitawny and the "Evil Jungle Peanut Chicken" is awesome. For the most part the recipes are easy to prepare and have readily availble ingredients as well as a pretty accurate hotness scale. My wife & I have probably made 15-20 of the recipes already and thats not counting the ones we repeated. You will need a large pan because the recipes make copious amounts of food. I recommend a big wok and a big, big glass of beer to chase the fire down. Oh yeah, you'll also need a towel to wipe the spice induced sweat off your brow. ENJOY!
