Super Soups 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you are going to have a soup cookbook, I would suggest this one. Each of the book's five sections ("Flavorful Homemade Stocks", "First Course Soups", "Light But Satisfying Soups", "Main-Dish Soups", and "Sweet and Refreshing Soups") contains fabulous recipes. Preparing stock ahead of time and keeping it in the freezer is a wonderful time saver for nights when you don't have a lot of time to cook. The flavor of a homemade stock is too rich to be compared with store-bought stuff. The recipe for "Fresh Tomato Soup with Basil" is the best homemade tomato soup I have ever tasted! "Yogurt Soup with Beef and Barley" is a recipe for a thick, delicious soup that will perfectly warm a cold winter night. There are also sections on microwave soups, breads to accompany soups, and suggested menus. Each recipe is preceeded by a description, so you know what to expect from your finished product.

Editorial Review:

Soup's on! Whether you serve soups as a first course, entree, or dessert, Homemade Soup ladles up all the recipes you'll ever need for any occasion, in every season. Along with a full complement of old-fashioned favorites, you'll find such surprises as sweet soups, microwave soups, light and low-calorie soups and cold soups. Full-color photos.

Great, quick soups that taste complex 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The books in this series are wonderful. The crab chowder, Middle Eastern sausage and bean stew and curried mushroom tortolloni soup are tasty and satisfying without having to stand at the stove a long time, so you don't have to wait till a day off to make them. Tip: the first time you make them, the recipes will take just a few minutes longer than the book says.

A very fresh approach to soup-making 5 out of 5 stars.

My wife often buys me cookbooks that I wouldn't think of, with mixed results. THIS one became an instant favourite. Gorgeous fonts and use of color; perfect layout - mostly a photo on one page (for us visual-oriented males ;-), and the complete recipe on the facing page. Most important: very tasty, visually-appealing, and quick recipes.

There is nothing in the book that isn't a photograph or recipe, yet I still think of it more as a COOKBOOK than a recipe book -- after you've made a few of the soups, you'll find yourself absorbing and adopting the common philosophy behind all these recipes. Even the photographs suggest new ways of making and serving soup.

I hardly need the actual book any more -- I just head off to the produce section and grab whatever is freshest and most appealing.

Favourite recipes? Out of the 60-odd here, I haven't found a dud yet.

Editorial Review:

The popular Fresh and Simple series offers more than 60 full-flavored soups and meals--from hot-and-spicy to vegetable-packed and gourmet soups. Time to prepare ranges from 20 and 30 minutes to make ahead.

Great introduction. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Soups, starts with a brief introduction into the different kinds of soups, and then presents recipe suggestions ranging from cold soups to soups for special occasions. Special chapters are dedicated to fish soups, cheese and egg soups, bean and grain soups, vegetable soups and meat soups. Classics such as borscht, bouillabaisse, consomme, French onion soup, various cream soups and chowders, gazpacho, goulash, hot and sour soup, minestrone, mulligatawny and stracciatella appear next to unique dishes such as carrot and cilantro soup, chilled plum soup and scallop and artichoke soup.

From avgolemono and beef and pasta soup to zucchini and tomato soup, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of dishing up a well-tasting soup - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.

Simple, Delicious and Inventive 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Simple, Delicious and Inventive. What more can you want from a cookbook! Chili is great work-day meal in the sense that it is one-dish, it reheats well, freeze well, and it actually tastes better on 2nd, or 3rd day!

This book opens my eyes on the ingredients that can go into a chili pot: orange, apple, raisin, tequila ...etc. If you think chili all tasts the same, try this book. It is also healthful. Every recipe uses about 1 TB of olive and that's it! And trust me, you won't even care the chili is not fatty, because it tastes so good. I am actually not a vegetarian. So when I have left-over meat, I jump them in the chili pot. No problem.

Most of all, this book is E-Z. Every recipe may have a long list of ingredients (mostly spices), but to cook it is pretty much: dump everything in, stir, and walk away.

Editorial Review:

Today, when millions of households contain--and almost any party will include--both vegetarians and meateaters, vegetarian chili takes away the guesswork: it's robust enough for carnivores, and it's sure to please vegetarians. Robin Roberston serves up a tasty invitation to discover how surprisingly versatile this timeless favorite can be. From mild concoctions suitable for fussy kids to five-alarm conflagrations for committed chileheads, these recipes are brimming with creative ideas and satisfying flavors.

Editorial Review:

First sketched by Gebbie Drayton in 1904, the Campbell Kids have endured for decades, in everything from streetcar ads and magazine layouts to dolls and animated commercials. The rosy-cheeked, cherub-faced youngsters have grown with America, reflecting its cultural shifts and expressing its ideals and aspirations. Charmingly innocent, plucky, and playful, they struck poses as Rosie the Riveter during World War II and flower children wearing tie-dye and holding peace signs in the 1960s. They have promoted the Red Cross, inspired Americans to buy war bonds and conserve electricity, and even promoted children's self-esteem.

In the process, the Campbell Kids became more than a trademark of Campbell's Soup; they became true American icons, embodying goodness and wholesome living. As the famous kids celebrate their 100th birthday, collectors of memorabilia and Americana will delight in this decade-by-decade trip through the lives of the Campbell Kids, the company they represented, and the country they came to symbolize. disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.

This recipe book is more for the kitchen sink cook. You know, find what you can around the kitchen put it in a pot and call it "Chilli" Well, I wasn't impressed. Most of the recipes didn't even appeal to me. (Uh, ketchup is never an ingredient to put into chilli for any reason....yuk!)

It is a great help in my research in the world of chili. 5 out of 5 stars.

I found that basically all chili recipes are really the same with just a pinch of differences. I was inpressed with the personalities that had contributed their own personal recipes. My wife was impressed with the recipes for some of the other Mexican dishes and we will be trying them soon. So this is more that just a book of similar chili recipes---it offers a variety of other dishes
