Inspired one-dish meals 5 out of 5 stars.

For me, the one thing that matters about a cookbook is: is it *inspired* or not? The ones that are not may have one to a few usable recipes, almost by accident, but the majority are either based on stale ideas, or they are too heavy, due to their use of meat, fat, sugar, or other such ingredients.

This book far surpassed my expectations. The recipes are original, hearty, satisfying - and low-fat. One of these soups with some bread and cheese makes for a simple and delicious weekday meal.

Most of the soups we've tried from this book have come out very well. We got off to a good start with Garlicky Cream of Celery Soup (p. 39). Examples of other successes: Cream of White Vegetables (p. 15; this worked fine with Chinese white radish/daikon; turnip is unavailable in Taiwan) - very smooth, soothing and flavorful; Gingered Pumpkin-Apple Soup (p. 25) - I'm not sure I'll put the apple in next time, but we all enjoyed the complex flavors of this one; Cream of Broccoli Soup with Whole Wheat Pasta (p. 96) also wasn't bad, even with plain macaroni shells. The Moroccan-Style Vegetable Stew (p. 26), with pumpkin, chickpeas and couscous, was very unusual and quite tasty. I was less impressed with the Tomato-Rice Soup with Snow Peas (p. 93) - this ended up something like Campbell's tomato rice, but then but I did make some substitutions, like white rice for brown. And I probably should have let the Curried Cauliflower-Cheese Soup (p. 84) thicken more before serving. You can skip the Sauerkraut Soup (p. 36) - this was edible, but didn't much appeal to any of us; too heavy on the sweet and sour, and not very satisfying. Still, I'm very gung ho about continuing to try out the other recipes. Well over half the recipes look doable to me in our environment, and that's a remarkably high ratio. I have found no other soup cookbook that can compare with this one. The recipes that work - and that has been most of them so far - are excellent, and just our style.

The book not only gives individual recipes but in fact teaches a *method* for making good vegetarian soups, i.e. pureeing cooked vegetables for a thick and hearty but not too rich base. Organizing the recipes by the seasons makes it easier to find a soup suited to the weather.

P. 27 has a recipe for 'Squash and Corn Chower', but that's the only typo I've spotted. The pencil drawings and quotes are quite charming. I haven't yet tried the bread and other 'accompaniments' recipes in the back, but they look intriguing.

In short: if you like soup but not meat, and are looking for ideas for simple but very good meals on the light side, this book is an outstanding choice.

Editorial Review:

This season-by-season cookbook presents a bountiful selection of 100 soups that are low in fat but rich in flavor--hearty chowders, elegant broths, savory bisques, stick-to-your ribs stews, and tempting international specialties. From Orange-Butternut Squash Soup to Okra-rice Gumbo, this is the ultimate soup cookbook for vegetarians.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my all time favorite cookbooks. My copy is 20 years old! I have both the softcover original and the hardback expanded version.

The recipes are set up with a list of ingredients, including mix and match for several items (i.e. you pick what type of soup, pasta, meat, cheese, seasoning, etc. from a list of suggestions). Any of their combinations are supposed to work well together. It's especially nice for novice cooks who are nervous of experimentation, as it really helps you gain confidence or have an idea of what to do if you are out of an ingredient.

I have tried SEVERAL recipes out of this booklet and almost every one of them has been very good. So far I have tried Mexican Style Appetizer, Chili, Pasta and Bean Soup, Easy Pot Roast, Stir Fried Beef and Vegetables, Souper Enchiladas, Meatball Stew, Chicken Paprika, Chicken Stuffing Bake (one of hubby's all time favorite casseroles), Pasta with White Seafood Sauce (one of the few recipes we didn't care for), Vegetables Oriental, and Broccoli & Noodles Parmesgan.

Even with that long list, there are still a lot of recipes that I want to try including, Cheese Stuffed Vegetables, Teriyaki Beef Kabobs, Baked Chicken Florida, Vegetable Lasagna, Skillet Potatoes, Savory Pilaf, and others.

I have five shelves of cooking books and this is by far one of my favorites. Overall the recipes are very easy and quick and mostly use common ingredients that I already have in my pantry and freezer. As I am sure you can tell by the list, there are plenty of "comfort" foods and what I think of as real home cooking. I would have to add the caveat though that for the most part I can't call them healthy recipes (although I make substitutions where I can like fat free mayo, Healthy Request cream soups, etc.)

My most recent recipe attempt was Best Ever Meatloaf and it was quite yummy.

I absolutely encourage you to try this book, especially if you are nervous about making substitutions. It will make you much more comfortable!!!

A delightful read, and some sound advice 4 out of 5 stars.
73 of 73 people found this review helpful.

If you are lucky enough to ever meet Gerogeanne Brennan, you know that she is the real thing: down to earth, a gourmand who gardens. You can trust that Brennan speaks from her experience, not from the experience of her "experts."

In this book Brennan does something unusal that you do not usually find in gardening books, especially ones that are geared for begining gardeners. There are no lists of 10 fool proof plants, nor strict instructions to plant something a specific way on an absolute date or face certain failure. (Honestly, why Martha thinks you have to plant peas on St. Patrick's Day is beyond me.) Brennan instead wants you to understand the philosophy of the potager, and then make your own rules.

Brennan suggests what you might want to plant in each of the four seasons (wherever you happen to live) and tells you what typically would be planted in a true French potager at the same season; Brennan gives you sources to find these plants; Brennan even gives you an idea of what size pot you would need if you are restricted to balconey gardening. Very thoughtful. Though I have not tried any of the recipes in this book, they are similar to others you can find in her well-received cook books.

The book itself is small and well made; the paper is heavy. It feels good in your hand. The illustrations are charming without being too cute, and often they illustrate a garden layout that actually makes sense. And of course Brennan's writing is rich and clear.

This is a good book for a beginning gardener. You will not be dissappointed.

Editorial Review:

The tradition of the kitchen garden, or potager, has for centuries been a cornerstone of the French country way of life-a year-round communion between the kitchen and the garden culminating in simple, gratifying meals prepared fresh with the flavors of the season. Taking up where the very popular Potager left off, In the French Kitchen Garden is a lovingly written, beautifully illustrated guide to cultivating a potager. Georgeanne Brennan imparts her passion for the potager while offering advice on adapting a kitchen garden to any climate or space. Punctuated with impromptu recipes for delicious dishes incorporating the fresh produce of each season, this book encourages everyone to adopt ?the creative, relaxed style of the French country cook.

A "MUST HAVE" Cook book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Even if you consider yourself an excellent cook, this book is wonderful. The recipes are simple, but with that "home cooked" taste! LOTS of pictures. I especially like the section "Make It Hearty", which has suggestions for simply adding a couple of additional ingredients to a can of soup to make a meal.

This is a great gift for busy families! Well worth every penny!

the best of the best 5 out of 5 stars.

For anyone who has ever used Campbell Soups for recipes, or ever wanted to see just how to do the classics like green bean casserole or squash casserole, this is a must have.
Clear, simple recipes that don't take hours - my kind of cookbook - think you will find the same.

Great for Busy People 5 out of 5 stars.

I've tried half-dozen or more recipes from this book and all of them are great. If your life is like mine, that is busy all the time, this book can afford you good meals quickly. I would not be ashamed to serve them to company.

I love soup, and I especially love this wonderful book by Anne-Catherine Bley and Akiko Ida. Covering all the basic ideas relating to soup the book delivers clear recipe instructions. Following the book will make you a soup expert in a hurry.

Organized around logical topics, the book is easy to use. Sections such as Tomato Soups, Pumpkin Soups, Carrot soups, Green soups, Dried Vegetable soups, hearty soups, etc, etc, etc are included. Also helpful sections on buying and using vegetables, storing soups, broths and stocks, and fruit soups are included.

We've had this book in the library for nearly three weeks. I've used it thoroughly in that time.

This is a book you'll find helpful and delightful at the same time. A++ on the photography.
