Easy camping recipes 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have made 5 of the recipes in this book so far and have enjoyed them all. It covers all varieties of camp cooking from pie irons to dutch ovens to foil packets to the grill. The recipes I chose required no pre-cooked meat as stated in a previous review, and I have only seen a couple of recipes that do. The recipes are easy to assemble and some can be prepared to marinate before you leave home, making cooking on the road even easier. I found this a good basic campfire cookbook that gives you a little bit of everything and every campfire cooking method. I would recommend it.

The best! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Disregard the other reviews! As an camp outdoor cooking instructor, I have many years experience teaching cooking over a fire and have never found a more useful cookbook as this for my classes! Comprehensive and fun, this book has it all...pie iron recipes, in a skillet, on a stick, in a dutch oven and wrapped in aluminum...all meals are tasty and practical. I even give this book as an award each year to my 'Most Outstanding' camper.

Editorial Review:

Designed just for the campsite, this cookbook features more than 100 recipes that can be prepared six different ways – in a pie iron, wrapped in foil, on a stick, on the grill, in a Dutch oven or in a skillet. With everything from Barbecue Chicken Pies to Sailor S'mores, this book will make you a hit in the wilderness, no matter what your preferred camping cooking method may be.

Too Funny 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes. I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far. Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

Dutch Oven cooking at it's best 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
The highlights of this book are the tales which are very amusing and informative at the same time. It gives this cookbook a touch of a Wild West story book, nicely to read and entertaining.
When did you read - really read - a cookbook last time?
This book was fun to read and I learned a lot of "handling" my Dutch Oven and outdoor cooking.

Editorial Review:

The book is a cookbook focusing on Dutch oven and camp cooking, spiced with humorous and informative stories of Mr. Welch's experiences cooking in the back country of Idaho. It includes the basics of history, selection, and care of Dutch ovens along with many recipes which a beginning Dutch oven cook, as well as a more experienced cook, will be able to master. The objective is to prepare easy, healthy, and delicious meals outdoors.

KEY for expedition planning 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is all you will ever need (and you WILL need it) to plan long trips. I find that planning food rations for long trips is one of the biggest logistical challenges. Not only can the planning be difficult, it can also be difficult to figure out which foods will keep your body energized and healthy over long periods of time (i.e. not Ramen). When you are on a high altitude expedition or on a long-distance backpacking trip this is very important. This book tells you which ingredients to bring along, how to break up food during the day (i.e. 10% of your food should be breakfast food, 25% should be lunch food, etc.) and which foods work well for each category. Included in the book are two worksheets which you can photocopy and use for each trip. The worksheets are basically formulas - you plug in the number of people in your group, the number of days you will be travelling, the quantity of food you want to take each day (the book also makes good reccomendations about how many pounds of food you should eat each day) - and then the book tells you how many pounds of breakfast foods, dinner foods, etc you will need for the entire trip. Once you have all of the basic ingredients, the book also has a great recipe section which tells you how to put together all of your ingredients into tasty meals. The book is small enough that you can take it with you on your trips (maybe 6 inches by 8 inches?). If you're really nitpicky you can cut the "cookbook" section out of the book and leave the rest at home to save weight. I'm glad that I finally got around to writing a good review for this book, and someday I need to get around to writing a thank-you letter to Claudia Pearson for writing it.

Very cute, and useful too 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is a really cute and useful book. It has a lot of color illustrations to make it very attractive for a child to read. Also, the concept of cooking over your campfire -- or over several different types of home-made grills that they teach you how to make -- is fun and different. This actually seems to be book two of a series -- the first looks like it's called "Cooking on a Stick, Campfire recipes for kids" by Linda White.

Anyway, the chapters are as follows:

Planning and Packing (make a cooking apron)

Setting up Camp (with a craft for making a banner for your site)

Campires (make a wood carrier out of a sweatshirt, and make some different kinds of fire starters)

Cooking on Outdoor Stoves (make a tin-can grill, canyon sandwiches with English muffins, recipe for asparagus "forests")

Cooking in a (full-sized) garbage can (make a garbage can cooker, make a small "buddy" burner, pizza soup recipe, apple stampede recipe [which is just apple sauce])

Cooking in a paper bag or paper cup (recipe for rise 'n' shine breakfast [bacon and eggs in a bag], chocolate on a stick)

Cooking in Leaves and other foods (bean burgers recipe, bloomin' muffins [muffins you cook in orange peels! how cool!]

Hot rock cooking (sunrise toast and hot rock chicken)

Pit Cooking (fondue and cake)

Solar oven cooking (veggie pie and cookies with granola)

Spit cooking (mushrooms and kebobs)

Dutch oven cooking (stew and cake)

The recipes seem to be well explained and simple enough for kids who are the correct age to actually read the book. (Amazon lists ages 4-8, which from the kid-style illustrations seems right on.) The gimmick of cooking in the woods is fun and safety instructions are included and explained. For example, they explain what makes a good rock to cook on! And they include a long list of supplies and safety equipment, even explaining how to properly -- and safely -- douse a fire. They also cover "what is safe drinking water?" and how to build the perfect campfire.

For those of you who are Family Fun magazine fans, (I appreciate their crafts and clever ideas), for camping fans, and for cooking fans who would like to try something new with their kids, this book is a fun addition to your library.

Editorial Review:

Have you ever made breakfast in a paper bag? Baked a cake underground? Cooked chicken on a hot rock? In this book, you'll learn how to do this and much more. Make your campout, backyard barbecue, or scouting trip something to remember with great food like Jackrabbit Bean Burgers, Marmot Munchies, and Wilderness Chocolate Cake. You'll learn how to cook using everything from an open fire, grill, and Dutch oven to a paper bag, hollowed-out orange, and garbage can! Plus learn how to make a cooking gear corral, pinecone fire starter, cooking apron, solar sill for drinking water, your own family banner, and more! Get ready for some great food and outdoor fun! Cooking in a Can is the perfect activity book for kids who love to camp and cook! Cooking in a Can follows Cooking on a Stick (now over 63,000 copies sold), and introduces dozens of techniques for cooking outside.

best cookbook for camping available 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Many years ago I went on my first camping trip with my husband. We entered beautiful Big Sur with everything we thought we needed; a tent, sleeping bag, camp stove and some propane. I forgot to bring food. I didn't even have a can opener. If only "Campfire Cuisine" had been available back then. The first two chapters cover all the gear and cooking supplies you need to bring and how to plan meals for the trip.

I love to cook. I love camping. This book really brings the two together. The usual camp cookbook recipe ingredients like bisquick, frozen tater-tots and canned mushrooms are completly absent. The author instead relies upon planning, at-home preparation, and careful packing to take the place of processed convenience products.

"Campfire Cuisine" is filled with delicious recipes most of which use a camp stove or grill. (Unfortunately there are no recipes for dutch oven cooking.) The recipes are fun without being really fussy. The "Fish cooked with curried couscous" (page128) is wonderful without being weird. Even my kids liked it! The whole thing cooks in tin foil on the grill. No clean up! The "grilled flatbread pizza" (page156) calls for lavash bread instead of pizza dough. Of course the next day that same lavash can be used for one of the many varieties of "Aram sandwiches" (page 88). There honestly isn't a recipe in here that I wouldn't try. But I do like trendy food and I like to try new things. If you like more basic food then this book might not be for you.

As for the book's design, I can see where someone who has poor eyesight would have a problem reading the book. It's printed in olive green and orange on white. I think the author wanted the book to be small enough to pack for a camping trip, so the type is really small. The content is so good though that the book is still worthwhile.

After fifteen years of looking for a great camping cookbook I finally found it. If you like to cook and want a book that will make the meals on your next camping trip really shine, then this book is for you.

Editorial Review:

Campers will wax rhapsodic about sleeping outdoors, breathing clean air, and communing with nature, all the while eating unhealthy, unsatisfying foods. Campfire Cuisine is here to ensure that you won't have to eat hot dogs and baked beans any longer.

This illustrated cookbook features more than 100 simple but inspired recipes for meals that can be cooked at a campsite all made from fresh foods, without any prepared or freeze-dried ingredients. Enjoy recipes such as Spicy Orange Chicken, Grilled Steak Tacos, Bourbon-Glazed Salmon, Lemony Couscous Salad, Cinnamon Baked Bananas, and more!

With Campfire Cuisine's practical guidance on meal planning, cooking, and equipment selection, it's easy to eat well while reveling in the great outdoors.

This is a must have book for the backpacker. It is full of great recipes and cooking hints. I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.

Well-fed 5 out of 5 stars.

Of all the sources of backpacking recipies that I have found, this is by far the best. Not only are most of the recipies reasonable, easy and tasty, but her many suggestions regarding saving money and easy planning are terrific.

If your pack carries 60+lbs... 3 out of 5 stars.

The ideas in this book are pretty good, though I wouldn't necessarily consider this a book for 'backpackers' - more likely for those who are car camping, and who don't mind some extra weight.

Great recipes, great food! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've used recipes from this book many times over years of canoe-camping. I've never been disappointed. Many have the notations "A hit!" and "VG!!" and "Delicious!" beside them. Friends always ask for the recipes.

Editorial Review:

A vastly expanded edition. Offers a long list of food sources, new material on drying techniques and many more winter meals to provide heat and sustenance on an icy hike. Haute hiking menus for spring, summer, fall, and winter.

great basic book 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

This is a great basic book 70 page book on this subject. I have about 10 different books on camp cooking, and this one covers many areas of outdoor cooking including camp stoves, fire making, selecting the right pots and pans. How to pack lightly is covered as well as sources to find things. Then there are the recipes which all work great and tste delicious. The writer has a homey style that is very comfortable to read, kind of like an old friend or uncle explaining things to you. The book is affordable. The interior illustrations are nice too.

A Good Amount of Unique Information 4 out of 5 stars.

Although I found a lot of this book to be useful, I was most impressed with the author's system to conserve fuel and speed cooking time while cooking outdoors in colder climates.

Not only basic but for the experinced also 5 out of 5 stars.

I am not a big fan of Cliff , but having said that, this book is one of his best. Many great tips are given and will keep food on the table/lap on those long trips.

Good to have in your outdoor collection.

This cookbook has been a pleasure to use. It has a wide variety of recipes and ideas that my family loves. This book also gives you instructions on how to build and use your own solar cooker.

Editorial Review:

Quickly toss together the ingredients for Cashew Curry, place it in the solar cooker, point the cooker to the midday sun, and head to work. You ll come home to a ready-to-eat hot meal. Solar cooking is a simple and easy way to prepare a meal without heating up the kitchen, simply by using the sun s heat.
Perfect for dishes requiring delicate cooking like Cheese Strata and Solar Baked Custard, and fish cooks up moist. Eliminate parboiling and marinating--it s done all in one step.

Ideas galore to save money 5 out of 5 stars.
42 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I first read this book as a teenage boy scout. I had camped once a month for many years and had tried all kinds of tricks to save money when camping, make your own gear, fun outdoor recipes, etc. but this book had tons of new ideas I had never heard of. 20 years after the first edition of this book means the author has updated it to our times, but it still great. This has always been indespensable to me. It really has made camping more fun and I reccommend it to anyone that takes kids camping, but you don't have to have them to try this stuff.
Lots of delicious recipes and methods to cook, but other stuff on first aid and making your campsite comfortable in many ways is featured. Features many ways to build a fire, how to make firestarters to speed up your firestarting, make your own waterproof matches, make your own campstove.

She shows you how to make a meal in a hollowed orange (cake in an orange!)or onion nestled in the coals! Cook eggs on a flat rock, recipes to cook on sticks, in foil, etc. Lots of ideas for home made items that will save you time and money in the woods. A hot water tank that sits in the fire; an outdoor sink made in seconds with a shovel and garbage bag; how to keep your pans clean the easy way; packing lists; use a can for a rolling pin in a pich; how to make lanterns from cans. One of my favorits was the tiny stove you make out of a coffee can. How to make a reflector oven for the woods, and 3 more types of ovens. (how about a cardboard box for an oven, it works).

Other books published since have borrowed some ideas from this one, but they were here first. Pictures and sketches on nearly every page are very helpful. The writing style is fun and easy to read.

Editorial Review:

With more than one million copies of previous editions sold, this proven, bestselling guide to having fun in the great outdoors provides an all-in-one tool that shows what readers need to know about campsites, fire-building, cooking, backpacking, winter camping, and more.
