Light Your Fire

If you love to barbecue but would like to add a little flair to your repertoire, zest to your sauce and spice to your life, then this cookbook is for you. Here is a different, tasty grilling recipe for, quite literally, each day of the year. Start with such unusual grilled appetizers as "Ginger Beef Bites" or "Chicken Sate with Peanut Sauce"; build a great meal around such easy-to-prepare meats and poultry as" Herbed Flank Steak with Dijon Mustard" and "Parslied Chicken with Garlic" or eat lighter with such seafood as "Shellfish Brochettes Hawaiian" or "Teriyaki Salmon Steak." There's even a special section of "grilled" salads, such as "Grilled Salad Nicoise" and "Grilled Chicken and Zucchini Salad with Mint"; and great vegetable accompaniments, such as "Grilled Ratatouille" and "Corn on the Cob with Chile Butter. " Experiment with marinades and spicy rubs. Try a variety of barbecue sauces. Throw a real New England clambake or a Texas barbecue. Whether barbecuing for a crowd, making something quick for the kids or preparing an elegant dinner, give a special twist to everything you grill with "365 Great Barbecue & Grilling Recipes.

A lot of ego stroking, no substance 1 out of 5 stars.
37 of 41 people found this review helpful.

the author spends a lot of my time telling me how good he is as a writer, and then I find many of his recipes do not work properly, or are so vague they could lead to disaster. there are just too many good Dutch Oven cookbooks today to have to put up with this author.

It was the first 5 out of 5 stars.

Today, cooking with a Dutch oven is all the rage and this book started it all. Every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own. Don Holm had the guts to write the first book in modern times (that being in the 1960s) about cooking with a Dutch oven. In fact, when Holm contacted Lodge about purchasing some ovens to perfect his recipes, he was informed that Dutch ovens were no longer in production. The rebound of this once essential and now popular way to cook in the great outdoors can be attributed to one person and one book, the Old Fashioned Dutch Oven Cookbook, by Don Holm. Sure, other authors have now jumped on the band wagon and written their take on the cast iron cooking pot, just as there are now more books than ever about vegetable gardening and fly fishing. But Holm was the first, and this book was the inspiration for many of the others. The author goes beyond what most readers would expect from a cookbook. He takes that extra step and provides a bundle of outdoor stories that outdoor lovers, and others, will enjoy. And, besides a history of the Dutch oven and the stories, Holm provides many useful recipes for beginners and experienced cooks as well. This book is a good study for all serious Dutch oven cooks and beginners as well. Once again, every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own.

Yeah Baby Yeah 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the barbecue books that you need to own. I have a few burger/barbecue books and this one as well as burger meisters are the best.

good book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is very practical and easy to follow. It gives preperation instructions for grilling, smoking, and baking for each recipe. It also give instructions for steps you can do in advance. The only reason I give this book a 4 is because it uses some comercial products, such as plum sauce and green tobasco. I prefer to make everything from scratch. Otherwise I would recomend this book.

Love to barbecue no matter what the season or where you are? With a grooved grill pan, you can sear all your favorite foods-steaks, chops, boneless chicken breasts, vegetables, shrimp-right on top of the stove. Like acharcoal fire, the high heat imparts a tinge of smoky flavor with very little added fat. And everything takes place indoors, which makes it perfect for urban kitchens. Grilling in the pan is quick and neat, providing a lean, contemporary way to cook.

In Best Grill Pan Cookbook Ever, you'll find tasty recipes for all kinds of grilled foods. In addition to seafood, vegetables, chicken, and meats, there are special starters, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and such tortilla dishes as quesadillas and burritos. There's even a sepa rate chapter that teaches how to achieve the same smoky barbecued flavor with larger cuts, such as pork tenderloin, beef short ribs, and butterflied leg of lamb,by searing them first in the pan and then finishing them off in the oven. Crispy Crab Cakes, Cajun Hot Chicken Salad, Grilled Fresh Tuna Salad Niçoise, Spicy Peanut Shrimp, Thai Basil Beef, Garlic Eggplant Steaks, Vegetarian Tortilla Turnovers, and Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Feta Cheese, Olives, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes give some idea of the kinds of delectable dishes you'll find in these 150 surefire recipes.

THANK YOU RUBY ANN BOXCAR! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I loved her first two books even though I'm not one for cooking so to speak, but I laughed the entire time I read them. And then when I saw this one online, I thought there was no way she could top herself. Well, I was wrong, and she has done it again. I took this with us on our family vacation across country, and while I drove, my wife read the book to us. There were a few times we actually had to pull the car over! Plus we used several of the tips and a lot of the recipes that Ruby Ann has in this book, and they were fantastic! I love the sauces. Since Ruby Ann and her neighbors will eat any type of BBQ, this book has a great mix of the tomato based sauces as well as the Eastern non-tomato based ones. And the recipes are so easy to make that I was even cooking a little this summer. What she does with meat should be illegal it is so good. Plus she also fills you in on what has been going on with the people of the High Chaparral Trailer Park since her last cookbook (the holiday one), which makes her series a sort of an All My Children meets Green Acres meets COPS meets the Food Network. I have to give this book two BBQ sauce stained thumbs up! Thanks you Ruby ann Boxcar.

Editorial Review:

Bad cooking ruins more camping trips—America’s most popular outdoor vacation activity—than anything else except rain. The Great American Camping Cookbook offers the delectable remedy: a camp cook’s guide to the fresh, natural “comfort foods” of the good old days. Whether your camp is a civilized weekend cottage, a rustic hunting or fishing cabin, or a primitive canoeing or backpacking bivouac, this book can help anyone make meals as vibrant as the outdoors itself.

Start the day with Wild Rice Pancakes or fresh-baked Cornmeal Blueberry Biscuits. Sit down to a classic shore lunch of Beer-Battered Smallmouth, Campfire Potatoes and Hush Puppies, or simple sorrel-stuffed trout. On rainy days, simmer up a pot of real Corn Chowder or Camp-Style Bean Soup. For memorable main courses, serve up a substantial Modernized Brunswick Stew, Blackened Yellow Perch, or Sautéed Walleye with wild rice and mushrooms. For side dishes, try fresh Camp-Baked Beans, spit-roasted Acorn Squash, or Sand-Baked Potatoes. Then savor a legendary Hot Buttered Rum or Camp Old-Fashioned as a nightcap.

In addition to recipes, The Great American Camping Cookbook offers a wealth of easy-to-follow advice on making perfect camp coffee and camp breads, calculating food portions, and composing provisions lists to assure variety and avoid forgotten essentials. The colorful history of American camp food and cooking—from the Jamestown settlement, Lewis and Clark, and Daniel Boone to Ernest Hemingway and John McPhee—adds fascinating lore to this essential guide to eating well in the great outdoors.

Now it s easy for any Browns fan to tailgate like a well-seasoned veteran. This book shares tips from Cleveland s top tailgaters about where to, when to, and how to do it all, Browns fan style.
It also tells inspiring tailgating tales from fellow fans and introduces some of the wild people, crazy vehicles, outlandish foods, and nonstop party activities you ll find in the lot.
For decades, hardy Cleveland football fans have enjoyed the pregame (and game . . . and postgame) in sun, rain, or sub-zero temperatures, sitting in folding chairs and clutching red plastic cups while watching a rack of ribs smoke on a homemade grill next to a brown-and-orange Winnebago.
This book celebrates the glorious tradition of Cleveland Browns tailgating. It will inspire you to don your dawg mask, grab your favorite beverage, and prepare to join the party!

An important and unusual blend of information on Southern cooking, culture, and redneck barbecue origins 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The culinary and cultural attributes of Searching For The Dixie Barbecue make for an important and unusual blend of information on Southern cooking, culture, and redneck barbecue origins - but don't expect a recipe book alone. Searching For The Dixie Barbecue: Journeys Into The Southern Psyche pairs black and white photos of Southern barbecue establishments with plenty of travel and cultural background to provide a road journey through the contentious world of Dixie barbecue. The lively, folksy manner makes for a winner for any who love barbecue!

Editorial Review:

Searching for the Dixie Barbecue, with its thought-provoking text and many black and white photos, is a culinary and cultural saga. Here are glimpses of a fragment of society still tenaciously clinging to deep-rooted, primal instincts; to legends of the American frontier; and to the hand-me-down, rural traditions of the Deep South. This is a story about (among other things) regional pride, homespun cookery, backwoods lore, self-effacing "redneck" humor, shameless braggadocio, macho self-imagery, carnivorous bravado, porcine fundamentalism, boldfaced lies, and both culinary and social intransigence. This book will supply you with the elusive answers to three questions: "What is ‘real’ barbecue?" "How do you find it?" and "What does it mean to be Southern?"
