Editorial Review:

Since 1992 Russell Jeavons has owned and cooked at a unique restaurant in an old cottage in one of South Australia's prized wine districts. It is famous in part because it's only open on Friday nights, but moreso for its fresh, simple food cooked entirely in Russell's wood-fired brick ovens. His pizzas are renowned throughout Australia, with fine regional ingredients artfully combined atop classic, thin, wood-oven cooked crusts. Russell's Pizza is the kind of place where friends and family gather to eat within sight of the golden, glowing kitchen; where the garden is equipped with warming braziers and outdoor fire pits for chatting, relaxing, and munching. It is an atmosphere that many of us covet for our own homes—an outdoor space where we can come together on cool nights for warmth, fun, and good food. The first part of Your Brick Oven is a step-by-step guide that takes readers through the stages of building an oven, from choosing the site to firing up for the first bake. Part two explains how to cook in the oven with invaluable tips for brick oven cooks, with recipes for sour dough bread, thin-crust pizzas, traditional roasts, fruit tarts, and sinful cakes and pastries.

This Book Will Not Disappoint! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My S/O and I took our first serious back-country trip in more than 15 years last week. We relied completely on this book for meal planning and food preparation. We were not disappointed. The recipes are all written in clear language, and are easy to follow. Packable trail instructions are available on-line, which helps with cooking in remote campsites. Of course, we could not try every single recipe -- but here are some of the best ones we tried. We had Olympus Oatmeal for breakfast every day. The Brunswick Stew was excellent, although it took a long time and lots of fuel to rehydrate the dried beans. The Vegan Super Hero Burritos were our favorite. The Whole-Food Granola Bars and Horse Thief GORP (we used unsweetened chocolate chips instead of carob chips) saw us through some long days of paddling and hiking. Our favorite snacks were the Energy Balls. We fought over the last one of those! I would warn others that many of the recipes call for prepackaged foods, such as Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice. People with specific health concerns should check the contents of these items before they use them. Fortunately, Zatarain's makes a low-sodium version of Red Beans and Rice, which we used. Otherwise, this is an excellent book. You can truly trust the recipes. I recommend it highly.

Editorial Review:

Tailgating, long enjoyed as burgers and beer before games, is becoming decidedly more elaborate, taking place everywhere from NASCAR races to ski slope parking lots. Devotees spend thousands on pickup trucks with built-in grills and coolers, elaborate portable smokers, gas-powered blenders, fancy canopies, and folding chairs with footrests and cup-holders. Many sporting goods stores now have entire tailgating sections. Clearly, this is an audience crying out for reliable, easy-but-exciting recipes and tips. Who better to answer their call than David Joachim, a culinary man’s man and dedicated tailgater?

In The Tailgater’s Cookbook, David Joachim brings his no-nonsense know-how to the stadium with ninety creative, mouthwatering recipes to prepare ahead or at the stadium. Recipes include simple appetizers to impressive grilled food like Memphis-style Babyback ribs to sophisticated desserts like Tiaramisu. From Brats in Beer, favored at Soldier Field, to Salmon Steaks with Pineapple Relish, enjoyed in Seattle, to David's version of the quintessential New York favorite, Grilled Pizza, the recipes in The Tailgater's Cookbook can be enjoyed at the Daytona 500 or at home on Super Bowl Sunday. Imagine new game-time favorites: Rum and Cardamom Pork Chops, Beef and Black Bean Chili, and even Easy Sangria instead of beer, because sometimes even the most sacred traditions must be broken!

Studded with checklists, trivia, parking lot etiquette, menus, and sources, The Tailgater’s Cookbook is the go-to guide for any informal outdoor (or even indoor) gathering.

This is one of the best cookbooks we've ever purchased. Couldn't be happier with the results of the recipes that we have tried so far.

This book shows you how to make food that most people would think would be very difficult to make. The book simplifies things with step by step instructions. Very good book.

Good 4 out of 5 stars.

Got the book, and looks almost like new! You could tell it was used because of the cover being scratched a bit. though on the description before I purchased, it did describe that, so I feel I received the book in good condition. Quick delivery!

With more than a million copies of the A Man, A Can series sold, the newest addition breaks out from the kitchen and heads to sporting events nationwide

"Dude, this cookbook is for you," cheered the Detroit News when A Man, A Can, A Plan first appeared.  Next came A Man, A Can, A Grill, and Andrew Schloss, author of Dinner's Ready, welcomed the flavorful barbecue fare as "real food - so good that no one will ever guess your secret is in the can."  Sports-minded, culinarily challenged dudes, especially those who were among the 30 million Americans who tailgated this year, will find terrific game-day recipes in this latest book.  And it's perfect as a  Father's Day and graduation gift!

A Man, A Can, A Tailgate Plan presents 50 simple, tailgate-friendly recipes for munchies and soups, plus chicken, beef, and port entrees perfect for any pregame party.  While many of the dishes can be fired up on the grill, tailgaters can prepare dips and desserts at home that are easily transported, or they can opt for tailgating's Holy Grail - the deep-fried turkey.  With these step-by-step instructions and full-color photographs, tailgaters can create a spread of appetizers and entrees that will be the envy of the parking lot.

Dutch Oven Use and Care, Plus Varied Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a five-star classic, and for the price can't be beat. The author covers selection, use and maintenace of Dutch ovens, as well as providing a good mix of recipe types (fish, poultry, deserts, etc.). I especially recommend the fish and rice recipe!

Small cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I will admit to being surprised when I got this at how small the book is, but its full of info and perfect for taking camping. I agree with others, there is no instructions on how many coals to use or for placement, but once you have used a DO a few times, it all becomes second nature.

I use mine one the stove or in the oven. We don't camp often but I use my DO at least twice a week. With a recipe that needs a few hours to cook, I make it in the backyard on a charcoal BBQ'er and it works great. I have had no problems at all figuring out cook times and temps.

From an intriguing Peppermint Pound Cake to Potato Soup, here's a fine pocket presentation also recommended for in-home use. 5 out of 5 stars.

Many dutch oven cookbooks on the market are weighty and daunting: not so the 4th updated edition of a near-pocket guide Dutch Oven Cooking, which is perfect for taking along and meal planning for a camping trip. It's the outdoors orientation which differentiates this from similar-sounding, home-oriented coverages, offering up dishes perfect for campfires and overnights and moving the dutch oven from indoors to outside. From an intriguing Peppermint Pound Cake to Potato Soup, here's a fine pocket presentation also recommended for in-home use.

Easy camping recipes 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have made 5 of the recipes in this book so far and have enjoyed them all. It covers all varieties of camp cooking from pie irons to dutch ovens to foil packets to the grill. The recipes I chose required no pre-cooked meat as stated in a previous review, and I have only seen a couple of recipes that do. The recipes are easy to assemble and some can be prepared to marinate before you leave home, making cooking on the road even easier. I found this a good basic campfire cookbook that gives you a little bit of everything and every campfire cooking method. I would recommend it.

The best! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Disregard the other reviews! As an camp outdoor cooking instructor, I have many years experience teaching cooking over a fire and have never found a more useful cookbook as this for my classes! Comprehensive and fun, this book has it all...pie iron recipes, in a skillet, on a stick, in a dutch oven and wrapped in aluminum...all meals are tasty and practical. I even give this book as an award each year to my 'Most Outstanding' camper.

Editorial Review:

Designed just for the campsite, this cookbook features more than 100 recipes that can be prepared six different ways – in a pie iron, wrapped in foil, on a stick, on the grill, in a Dutch oven or in a skillet. With everything from Barbecue Chicken Pies to Sailor S'mores, this book will make you a hit in the wilderness, no matter what your preferred camping cooking method may be.

Too Funny 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes. I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far. Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

Dutch Oven cooking at it's best 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
The highlights of this book are the tales which are very amusing and informative at the same time. It gives this cookbook a touch of a Wild West story book, nicely to read and entertaining.
When did you read - really read - a cookbook last time?
This book was fun to read and I learned a lot of "handling" my Dutch Oven and outdoor cooking.

Editorial Review:

The book is a cookbook focusing on Dutch oven and camp cooking, spiced with humorous and informative stories of Mr. Welch's experiences cooking in the back country of Idaho. It includes the basics of history, selection, and care of Dutch ovens along with many recipes which a beginning Dutch oven cook, as well as a more experienced cook, will be able to master. The objective is to prepare easy, healthy, and delicious meals outdoors.

KEY for expedition planning 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is all you will ever need (and you WILL need it) to plan long trips. I find that planning food rations for long trips is one of the biggest logistical challenges. Not only can the planning be difficult, it can also be difficult to figure out which foods will keep your body energized and healthy over long periods of time (i.e. not Ramen). When you are on a high altitude expedition or on a long-distance backpacking trip this is very important. This book tells you which ingredients to bring along, how to break up food during the day (i.e. 10% of your food should be breakfast food, 25% should be lunch food, etc.) and which foods work well for each category. Included in the book are two worksheets which you can photocopy and use for each trip. The worksheets are basically formulas - you plug in the number of people in your group, the number of days you will be travelling, the quantity of food you want to take each day (the book also makes good reccomendations about how many pounds of food you should eat each day) - and then the book tells you how many pounds of breakfast foods, dinner foods, etc you will need for the entire trip. Once you have all of the basic ingredients, the book also has a great recipe section which tells you how to put together all of your ingredients into tasty meals. The book is small enough that you can take it with you on your trips (maybe 6 inches by 8 inches?). If you're really nitpicky you can cut the "cookbook" section out of the book and leave the rest at home to save weight. I'm glad that I finally got around to writing a good review for this book, and someday I need to get around to writing a thank-you letter to Claudia Pearson for writing it.

Editorial Review:

Wilderness chefs looking to make their meals more nutritious and appealing need look no further than this newest edition of NOLS Cookery, the National Outdoor Leadership School's classic guide to backcountry cooking. From Cowboy Coffee to Darn Tootin' Black Beans to Scrambled Brownies, the book's recipes and culinary advice are guaranteed to please the palate and provide the energy needed for strenuous outdoor activity. Extensive revisions based on up-to-date research have been made to the nutrition section, and nutrient analyses are provided for all recipes. Additional sections cover fire preparation, cooking technique, and ration planning.
