Big Advertisement...don't waste your money... 1 out of 5 stars.
57 of 59 people found this review helpful.

I was expecting a book with good turkey recipes with marinades and rubs, but instead it is recipes that you need to buy the authors own marinades and rubs. Evidently this guy started the Cajun Injector marinades and seasoning and the recipes say things like, use one jar of our marinade and one can of our seasoning and use our injector. There are a grand total of 9 turkey recipes in a book that has 192 pages. All the other recipes are for different side dishes and some desserts. Don't waste your money on this book. It was a big dissappointment.

Excellent Restaurant Favorites Recipes! 4 out of 5 stars.

One star off for the author touting his own rubs and marinades. Aside from that, this is one of the best cookbooks I've seen for deep frying in general - especially if you love onion blooms and begneits. The turkey frying instructions are very safety-oriented and we got great results. Every recipe is carefully given for the best breading and frying technique for the particular food. Our family has passed around one copy of this book for several months now while waiting to buy our own copies. Highly recomended!

Editorial Review:

Anyone who uses an outdoor grill the way most of us do - to cook food quickly, at high heat - is failing to realize the flavorful advantages of smoke cooking. As Richard Langer puts it, Low heat, a long time, and lots of smoke - those are the keys to a good barbecue.

This comprehensive guide to smoke cooking gets down to basics with a dozen lip-smacking recipes for barbecued ribs alone, from the classic Shake 'n' Smoke Ribs to Hoisin Ribs and Baby Back Ribs with Citrus. Here, too, are traditional as well as imaginative approaches to barbecuing all kinds of

* meat, from beef (Garlicked Skirt Steak, Smokeburgers) to pork (Chili Chops, Pork Pecan Roll with Maple Sauce, Hurry-Q Honey Ham) to lamb, venison, and buffalo (Smoked Rack of Lamb with Dill Sauce, Venison Steak with Juniper Berries);
* poultry (Jamaican Jerked Chicken Breasts, Turkey Thighs with Fresh Mozzarella);
* seafood (Cajun Tuna Steak, Swordfish Vietnamese, Smoked Gravlax);
* roti and kabobs (Combination Gyros, Skewered Scallops, Vegebobs); and
* vegetables (Garlic Bombs, Ember Onions, Corn in the Husk).

With instructions for converting any backyard grill (gas, electric, Weber, what-have-you) into a smoker, and with tips for enhancing flavor by choosing different varieties of wood, this is an essential guide to real barbecue for anyone who cooks outdoors.

a good supplement to The Bread Builders 4 out of 5 stars.
107 of 107 people found this review helpful.

If you're interested in building a wood-fired oven for baking, this is a good supplement to Alan Scott's essential "The Bread Builders". Provides very interesting historical background, amusing anecdotes and a set of plans which are aimed a bit more squarely at the amateur builder than Alan's plans. I'm building an oven now using plans interpolated between the two. If you're going to tackle a project like this, get a good book on masonry techniques too, or better yet, a video. (Amazon, care to provide some suggestions?)

Editorial Review:

The ultimate project for the DIY cook and baker: an oven in your own back yard. Pizza cooks faster and is more tender, bread crusts as it's never crusted before. The anticipation prompted by the smoking chimney is indescribable, the results without peer. This little book tells how to build a outdoor brick oven from scratch, with working drawings; and how to restore an existing oven if your house is so lucky to possess one. There is guidance in firing and running the oven, and some recipes for good measure.

Solar cooking is a simple and easy way to prepare a meal without heating up the kitchen, simply by using the sun s heat.
Perfect for dishes requiring delicate cooking like Cheese Strata and Solar Baked Custard, and fish cooks up moist. Eliminate parboiling and marinating--it s done all in one step.

A good choice 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I got this cookbook even though there were no reviews, something I usually never do, but I'm glad I did. A few of the recipes rely on packaged foods which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, but overall there are a lot of recipes I'm excited to try.

the book is the perfect size for taking along camping, or for just storing in the kitchen, and its a great price. The book has a lot of info on DO, care, how to cook with charcoal, etc. and in the back is a section on cooking for crowds which is very helpful for feeding large gatherings.

Overall I'm very happy with this cookbook

This is a must have book for the backpacker. It is full of great recipes and cooking hints. I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.

Well-fed 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Of all the sources of backpacking recipies that I have found, this is by far the best. Not only are most of the recipies reasonable, easy and tasty, but her many suggestions regarding saving money and easy planning are terrific.

If your pack carries 60+lbs... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The ideas in this book are pretty good, though I wouldn't necessarily consider this a book for 'backpackers' - more likely for those who are car camping, and who don't mind some extra weight.

Great recipes, great food! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've used recipes from this book many times over years of canoe-camping. I've never been disappointed. Many have the notations "A hit!" and "VG!!" and "Delicious!" beside them. Friends always ask for the recipes.

Editorial Review:

A vastly expanded edition. Offers a long list of food sources, new material on drying techniques and many more winter meals to provide heat and sustenance on an icy hike. Haute hiking menus for spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Probably the only BBQ cookbook I will ever need... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this along with Southern Living 40 Years of Our Best Recipes the week before Labor Day and it was delivered within a couple days. This was my first BBQ cookbook and will probably be my only one as I am still reading and finding awesome recipes I want to try. My contribution to our Labor Day cookout was four recipes from this cookbook: Tropical Smoothies, Four-Hour Barbecue, Grilled Asparagus and Honey Barbecue Sauce (which I used on babyback ribs and chicken quarters). ALL of them were a HUGE hit and the cookbook was passed around during the cookout. I have purchased two additional sets as birthday gifts and the recipients have raved about the new recipes they are anxious to try, especially from this BBQ cookbook. I also shared this BBQ cookbook with some of my co-workers and they all want their own copy (I'm not letting this one out of my sight for very long). The recipes are not complicated and so far, have provided wonderful results.

There are other helpful tidbits in the front of the cookbook that were interesting to me: There is a fairly decent list of BBQ places and BBQ events to visit across the country so now I can build my travel plans around those places/events. Reading the grilling tips in the front has even inspired me to purchase a smoker. Although it is a paperback version and may not be able to withstand my constant reading and use, I am very excited about this cookbook and will definitely be using these recipes year-round.

Editorial Review:

Better stock up on napkins, because no one does barbecue like Southern Living. This definitive new edition serves up more than 580 barbecue recipes, the largest collection ever from Southern Living magazine. You'll have a great time preparing--and comparing--with this ultimate guide to 5-star barbecue. Features: 50 grilling techniques and party ideas for the ultimate barbecue

More than 130 juicy, full-color photos that simplify the grilling process

"Pit Stops" features reveal famous roadside barbecue haunts
