Editorial Review:

Buy food in bulk and reap the savings—without waste or an endless parade of leftover meals—with this superb cookbook filled with ideas for cooking creatively for an average-sized family

More and more Americans are purchasing their groceries today in large quantities at price clubs and warehouses. But our meal planning and cooking habits have not caught up with this trend. At last, here is the first cookbook designed to help shoppers make the most of the money-saving and culinary rewards that these clubs have to offer—without having to eat the same dish four nights in a row or trash the unused portions.

How long can I keep salad greens before they turn into something out of a horror movie? How can I use that 72-ounce can of tuna without making 110 tuna sandwiches, like Woody Allen did for his army in Bananas? In Big Food, award-winning journalist and food writer/editor Elissa Altman tells readers how to shop, meal plan, and cook inventively; how to store food safely; and how to use her 150 delicious recipes to turn large quantities of chicken, for instance, into Apricot-Glaze Roasted Chicken; Asian Chicken-Stuffed Lettuce Rolls; and Quesadilla of Chicken, Childes, Tequila and Lime or a 6-8-pound salmon fillet into Curried Salmon Salad with Grapes and Walnuts, Cold Poached Salmon with Horseradish Cream, and Smoked Salmon Omelet.

Cooking at its best 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We've had this book for a couple of years now and are delighted with the simplicity and quality of the recipes. Initially purchased as a gift for sailor friends but their success with the recipes was so great that we purchased one for ourselves. Our friends even won a contest with one of the eggplant recipes. This book NEEDS to be reprinted. We are so sorry we can not offer it as a gift for more of our friends and are very dissapointed about that.

Hopefully the publisher will reconsider.

Each and every recipe is a delight to make and eat ! 5 out of 5 stars.

I would be honoured to have these two fine cooks and writers at my table, although I would be humbled by their presence as what they have brought together in their cook book is tantamount to magic. They have in effect brought the art of "simple" close to gastronomic and sometimes surpassed in gastronomic. We have owned this book since 1991, 1 year after the original publication and it is getting threadbare, forgetting the wonderfull combinations of flavours, anyone with a love of boating, especially sailing, will wistfully romance the pictures and sceniks as you meander through its pages. Hats off to two great people of this earth who have made mine and many others life more pleasant and worth living.

Editorial Review:

More than 160 recipes that offer simple but sophisticated meals afloat inspired by the love of sailing--and good enough to use at home. With 124 full-color and black-and-white photographs.

Editorial Review:

Warehouse club shopping is thrilling. Walking down aisle after fluorescent-lit aisle of impossible-to-pass-up bargains, you fill your cart and tally the money you're going to save. Unloading the boxes and jugs, however, it becomes obvious that, while the way you shop for food may have changed, the scale of your refrigerator (and your stomach!) has not.

So what do you do with the sixteen chicken breasts, the five pounds of oatmeal and the gallon of olive oil that you couldn't afford not to buy? You turn to From Warehouse to Your House: More Than 250 Simple, Spectacular Recipes to Cook, Store and Share When You Buy in Quantity by Sally Sampson, veteran cookbook author, working mom and accomplished warehouse shopper.

Utilizing the fresh and packaged products available at the warehouse clubs and superstores, Sampson's flavorful recipes are simple enough for a weeknight dinner and special enough for entertaining and, if you're cooking for a couple or a small family, portioned so you can eat some, store some and even share some.

Those boneless chicken breasts turn into New-Fangled Classic Chicken Noodle Soup, Curried Chicken Salad for lunch and Moroccan Chicken for the freezer. Three pounds of butter becomes Chipotle Butter to dress up a grilled steak or chicken breast, Cinnamon Butter for your morning toast and Chocolate Chip Cookies: a batch baked right away, a batch of dough for the fridge and a batch for the freezer. And that big box of oatmeal? When you're tired of hot cereal (maybe with some of the Cinnamon Butter?), try the Fruit Crisp or Oatmeal Lace Cookies. From breakfast coffee cakes to soups, appetizers, salads and dressings, sandwiches and entrÉes, Sampson gives the home cook who buys big a wide variety of classic American recipes, as well as international dishes like Mexican Chicken Fajitas, Asian Ribs, Italian pastas and Jamaican Jerk Chicken.

Sampson includes an essential pantry list, and amusing and informative tips and techniques that will help you make the most of your time, your money and your groceries, whether you're cooking for a small family or a small army.

Excellent reference text 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

An excellent reference text for restaurant owners, menu planners, restaurant consultants, or those who just need a couple thousand new recipes. I have found it to be an indespensible resource.

I highly recommend this book. The only caveat is that it is well over a thousand pages, so you'll need to make room in your kitchen for it!

Excellent Information Reference/Recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very informative resource for serious or recreational cooks. It helps you to match foods with suggested menu ideas. It is written in a clear manner and makes exactly the amount it says it will, yet, the amount can be easily reduced. I purchased a very nice used book, and am pleased with the individual that I dealt with.

Actual Author 5 out of 5 stars.

Authorship 5 out of 5 stars.

Wenzel's Menu Maker was written by George L. Wenzel, and William J. Wenzel, the authors son, helped extensively with the
afformentioned revised edition.
The book is an excellent resource, but is well overdo for an update, which William J. has confided to me that he is more than willing to do, if the publisher ever expresses such an interest.
(by way of disclosure, George L. is my grandfather & William J.
is my father)

It's okay... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love the idea of one-pot cooking. Then I realized that one pot doesn't really work in a family with one vegetarian and one meat-eater. We need two pots. But that's not this book's fault, obviously.

I've torn through my library's collection on casserole cookbooks, and I have to say, I've found better ones that this one. (Check out "Simply Casseroles" or "Crazy for Casseroles" instead) This book doesn't have many casseroles at all.

Editorial Review:

With today's busy pace, would-be cooks are looking for recipes that require the minimum time, while providing the maximum flavor. Step-by-Step One Pot and Casseroles Cookbook features 450 recipes that are mixed in a single dish and left to cook in the oven, on the stove, or in a slow cooker or clay pot, for anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours. Step-by-step 1000 color photographs accompany traditional fish, poultry, meat, and vegetable casseroles and stews, such as coq au vin, chili con carne, ratatouille, and seafood jambalaya, as well as hearty soups and puddings.
