Editorial Review:

Just because you are your household, don't assume eating solo limits you to having pizza, pancakes, or meat loaf in restaurants; buying them already prepared; or having to file extra portions in the freezer or the dustbin. As Jane Doerfer proves in Going Solo in the Kitchen, with no more effort than when cooking for two or more, one person can eat well and dine beautifully.

Doerfer's main strategies are to use fresh ingredients and to make friends with supermarket staff who can accommodate her needs in the land of large families. She gives detailed advice on storing foods--cooked chicken, for example, tastes better and has better texture when stored in liquid (like a sauce or broth), while potato salads and other prepared dishes keep better longer when left unsalted until just before serving.

Solo cooks do have advantages: you can eat what you want, as often as you want it, and the cost of a steak or lobster dinner is only for one.

Doerfer offers variations for recycling in case of leftovers. Her description of how to cut up a whole chicken is graphically clear (see "Chicken Management") and will save you money.

The recipes and techniques Doerfer offers will brighten the lives of solitary diners who love variety, good food, and home cooking. She provides recipes for everything you might want, from Chicken Noodle Soup to elegant Halibut with Asparagus, Cream Scones, perfectly cooked rice, and fresh, hot berry pie, made in just the right way for one. --Dana Jacobi

The Dinner Doctor is IN 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love to read cookbooks. Usually, that's all I do with them, thumb through them and set them aside, maybe making one or two of the recipes. When I got this cookbook, I took it to my son's football game and read it during timeouts, etc. Not only was it a good read, but the recipes are perfect for a family on the go who needs ideas here and there for something different. I'm also a cook who isn't afraid to try new things, so some of the recipes give me good ideas and I can adjust them to my family's taste.

One of my favorite sections is the appetizers. Our family attends many family social events, and there are several good appetizer recipes that are good to take to parties and get togethers.

I think some reviewers are a little harsh in their judgment of this book. If you want a cookbook that has recipes where the ingredients are all from scratch and are low in sodium, calories, fat, etc. then a book from the Dinner Doctor obviously isn't going to be for you! But, if you want a book that will give you a several easy, quick, friend- & family-friendly ideas for use every now and then, then this is the book for you.

Love Zonya on PBS, but her book is just okay 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Zonya is energetic and inspirational on TV, but this book really isn't the best. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like recipe books that have a traditional format. They need to be sturdy work horses. I like a book that's hard covered, and with either spiral or strongly bound pages. Zonya, made this book too cutsy! It has a funky fold out easel stand that's supposed to hold the book upright so a person can read the recipes. However, it stands too upright to view the recipes without bending over and holding your head at an akward angle. I don't like the way you have to flip the pages up to turn them, instead of turning them the way you turn most other books pages--from right to left. The cover is very flimsy. It's laminated, which is good, but it's very thin and shifts around a lot. The way the book is made, it doesn't stack or fit in well with all my other cookbooks on the shelf. The cover is too whimpy to keep it from sliding, shifting, and twisting under the pressure of my big work horse cookbooks. Lickety Split looks completely overwhelmed next to my other cookbooks. I almost feel sorry for the little thing, as it sits there getting smooshed. Give me a tough, ugly, practical and useful brute any day!

As for the recipies, many of them are very fundamental and novice. I could think up throwing a can of corn, beans, chill powder and chopped onions together and topping the mixture with cornbread to make a casserole all by myself, without buying this book. Most of the recipies seem to be geared toward getting your kids to eat healthy meals. If you're a busy Mom or Dad, this book my be useful. Several of the recipies do taste pretty good. That's why I gave it 3 stars. However, if you've been cooking healthy meals for awhile you probably won't find anything new here. The recipies may seem a bit blah, unsophisticated, and uncreative. Iron Chef material this isn't!

Simply stated, Sandra Lee is an expert cook, the host of the successful Food Network television series 'Semi-Homemade Cooking" (which celebrates its 200th episode in May 2008), and the author of thirteen books. The latest of which is "Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Grilling 2" that is comprised of two hundred pages of culinary advice, recipes, gadgets, and illustrations that focus upon the art of the grill. Separate chapters are devoted to grilling veggies and sides; skewers; dogs and sausages; 'things to Do with Your Turkey Fryer'; beef; 'things with Wings; Swimmers (fish); 'Best Burgers'; desserts, and 'Parties' (including party menus and tablescapes from a beach blanket bash to a father's day feast'. With mouth-watering, 'cook friendly' recipes ranging from Prosciuto-Wrapped Corn on the Cob; Salami-Stuffed Pork Chops; Rib Steaks with Raspberry-Tarragon Sauce; and Bourbon-Brined Chicken; to Salmon Steaks with Sun-Dried and Fresh Tomato Salsa; Taco Meat Loaf; Mixed-Berry Cobbler; and Grilled Figs with Orange-Honey Drizzle, "Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Grilling 2" will prove an exceptionally popular addition to personal and community library cookbook collections!

Editorial Review:

Anyone facing an occasional dinner for one, making solo brown-bag lunches, or living alone will find Toni Lydecker's Serves One invaluable. She shows you how to make tabbouleh and ratatouille in modest amounts so you don't have to eat them for days. She even gives a recipe for pizza dough you can turn into perfect, single-size pies. Who needs soggy take-out when you can make your own potato and pesto pizza, or luxuriate on Sunday with a creamy Smoked Salmon Pizza? (You bake the dough, then add the topping; it's much better than a bagel!)

Lydecker tells how to make Mini Meatloaf and Oven-Barbecued Pork Ribs, just the right amount of Chicken Fingers, even your very own Shellfish Steamer, a kind of clambake. Many recipes cook in 5 to 20 minutes. When stews and soups take longer, they don't need tending. If any cookbook will ever wean you off frozen entrees and instant mixes so you eat as well on your own as with family or friends, Serves One can do it. --Dana Jacobi

Whether it was a whirlwind romance or you've known each other for years, you are entering a new stage of life. Now that you're married, it's time to think about the new life and traditions you'd like to create. Often our fondest family memories are centered around the dinner table, with the fulfilling meals and companionship it offers.

To create this cookbook, Gayle Pirie and John Clark have drawn from their experience as restaurant chefs and on their shared history as a married couple. They have cooked in some of San Francisco's best restaurants for nearly twenty years, so they know how to make food taste delicious. But they also know what it's like to come home from a long day of work and want to create a comfortable haven for their family. In these pages, Gayle and John have brought together dozens of their own favorite dishes that can create hundreds of family meals.

Knowing that most of their readers won't have learned the art of cooking at their grandmother's knee, they've also included the basics. The Bride & Groom Cookbook explains all you need to know about setting up a kitchen and pantry with essential equipment and ingredients, combining dishes to create a meal, and even cooking methods. If you're already comfortable in the kitchen, you'll find plenty of valuable advice on pairing wine and food, serving a cheese course, and gracious entertaining.

The two of you could take only one cookbook with you as you embark together into this new and rewarding stage of life, the Bride & Groom Cookbook would truly be the one.
