Good, but not for my family. 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is nice and has alot of good recipes that look delicious but unfortunately I didn't look at it before I bought it. The recipes are for food and/or ingredients that I wouldn't normally make for my family. Also,if you have kids that are picky eaters its probably not for you.

Great recipes, beautiful cookbook, good tips 4 out of 5 stars.

I happen to love the beautiful presentation of WS cookbooks, and this book was no exception. In addition to the easy to make recipes (for the most part), there are suggested sides as well. Also, a handy cooking and shopping "how-to" is at the end of the book. Great for a beginner cook, or just someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen!

(minus one star because I would have like to see more recipes in the 20- and 30- minute section)

Not my thing 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I gave this three stars because for those with more gourmet tastes, this book would probably be a great addition to their cookbook library. I personally however didn't care for this book much at all. There's a few recipes I'll try and I made note of a few suggested cooking times from the dictionary section of the book, but I'm glad I checked this out from the library rather than spend money on it. I would have been greatly disappointed with the purchase.

Editorial Review:

Learn to use your microwave oven to do everything you hoped it could and more with breakthrough techniques and recipes that will change the way you cook forever.

First published in 1987, Barbara Kafka's Microwave Gourmet redefined the way people thought about the microwave oven. Microwave Gourmet is the only book that clarifies which dishes are at their best when made in the microwave, which are the worst, and why.

There are over six hundred delicious recipes for everything you can conceivably want classics like Filet of Sole with Almonds and Turkey with Cranberry Sauce and Saffron Risotto, plus old-fashioned favorites such as Baked Macaroni and Cheese and an American Chocolate Layer Cake that cook up in five to ten minutes. Microwave Gourmet lets you eat good, homemade food in no time at all.

Microwave Gourmet is an indispensable reference and a ground-breaking book that will change your mind about using the microwave forever.

Great for those that don't know how to cook or just want it simple 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. I have owned it since the '80's when my mom bought it for me when I was in college.

I only read one review that gave this book a low score. In it the genius says "I know how to cook" and "Anyone can fry an egg".

So... why did he buy this book? If you are Emeril, then don't buy this book. This book is meant for us fools who actually don't really know how to fry eggs. Or more importantly, those of us who have lives outside the kitchen.

If that is you, BUY THIS.

    Editorial Review:

even better than the first 20 minute cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

There are many people who turn their noses up at Sandra Lee but I must tell you - I find her cookbooks lovely to look at, well-written and the food super easy for busy people to deal with. Her Semi-Homemade philosophy was something I was already doing somewhat in my own kitchen; depending upon short-cuts to get good meals prepared quickly.

Sometimes I want to do the whole "Slow Food" thing. That is great when I have the time. But when I have been working for 10 hours and I just want to make some good food, Sandra Lee saves the day.

I liked her first 20 minute meals book rather well but this one is even better. I have all of her cookbooks except the one on desserts because I never make desserts - that one is 100 percent purchased in the store for me! I am not a baker or a pastry chef so why even pretend to be.

I enjoy her show on the Food Network but I was a fan of hers before she was ever on the network and had put out two cookbooks, Cooking 1 and Cooking 2.

Her personal story is also very inspirational. She has been through so much and yet still has amazing optimism and strong values. Sandra Lee is very likable as well as a kitchen whiz!

Don't hate her because she is a gorgeous blonde - her soul is absolutely BRUNETTE!

    Editorial Review:

In Semi-Homemade 20-Minute Meals 2, Sandra Lee delivers another delicious collection of timesaving, shortcut meals that use the 70% store bought and 30% “fresh” or homemade formula. The cookbook features 60 perfect meal pairs, so there is no time wasted guessing which main dish will go with which side dish. And, if the occasion calls for it, there are chapters on tempting Treats and Starters, all designed to maximize flavor and minimize your time in the kitchen.

    INTRODUCTION
Vietnam is a country of natural beauty with a coastline of sandy beaches stretching about 2000 miles (3225 km) from the northern to the southern tip of the South China Sea. Along the coast, fishing is the main livelihood. The majority of Vietnamese people are Kinh race people (87%) with the remaining of 53 different ethnic minority groups. For more than 2000 years, the country has been subjected to a near continuing series of foreign occupations from China, France, Japan, and America. One consequence of these occupations is the lasting influence on Vietnamese cuisine. Among Vietnamese dishes, perhaps the best known in the West is Pho, a noodle soup. Another is the deep-fried spring roll called Nern in the north, and Cha Goi in the south. Rice is a staple food used as a side dish, or a main dish when combined with other ingredients, such as beef, pork, chicken, or seafood. Vietnamese dishes consist of many different blends of herbs and spices. Most dishes are not fiery hot, nor greasy. Seafood and vegetarian dishes like An Chay are very popular. Today, Vietnamese cuisine is gaining increased international attention due to the fact that it is quite healthy.
This book is an introduction to a new generation for a delicious journey through Vietnamese cuisine. While the combination of flavors may seem experimental to some, they will result in a savory experience. All ingredients used in these recipes can be found in supermarkets, natural food stores or in Asian food markets. It is our pleasure to share these quick and delicious Vietnamese recipes with you. Enjoy the good nutrition that comes with it.

Taught me how to cook 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 33 people found this review helpful.

This little book is AWESOME. I recommend it for anyone with little time to cook (college students, working moms, anybody else!). The recipes are great - easy and fast (be sure to read the side bars as they provide simple ideas to vary the basic recipes). But, I think the best part of this book is that it really teaches you how to cook fast, healthy food. I find myself applying her time-saving methods to other recipes or to creations of my own. This is the book that I turn to when I want a nice meal in 30 minutes or less.

    Editorial Review:

Vegetarian magician Lorna Sass pulls another carrot out of the culinary hat with this book. (Of course it's a carrot--this is a vegan cookbook!) This short and snappy book will wow you with Mushroom Barley Soup that cooks in 15 minutes, an almost instant Chickpea Curry, an inspired Vegetable Paella, Tortilla "Sushi," and more. In addition to the recipes, Sass names specific products useful for making speedy, tasty meals and recommends ingredients to keep in the pantry and freezer so there's always something to work with in the house. To prove that quick, good eating doesn't depend on recipes alone, Sass offers time-saving principles: adapt them and you'll quickly move from needing recipes to easily creating your own.

Not this Guy 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 37 people found this review helpful.

Who did she interview to think this is what guy's like to eat? Every recepie in here is designed for women to make sure they can collect their husbands life insurance checks from heart attacks, and still be young enough to enjoy them. Healthy? I don't think so. If you really think her meals are healthy, look how much weight she has gained over the past couple years. Every meal she uses a lot of olive oil, butter, and salty additives. then writing a recepie for "Hamburger Salad" Basically garden greens from a bag, and a couple fried hamburger patties placed on top of the greens, with cheese on it. Oh my...Quick, easy and "Healthy" meals guys like to eat. Yummo? I don't think so.

Good Gift Book for Young Guys First Learning to Cook 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Many young men mainly subsist on cold cereal, take-out pizza, and macaroni and cheese meals they make from a box. How will they ever develop past using the microwave for heating frozen foods? Rachael Ray's small book, 30 30-Minute Meals "Guy Food" can help.

If you already own Rachael Ray's 30-minute meals cookbooks, realize that these meals are reprints from those volumes.

If you are concerned about keeping down your weight, these meals aren't the best. You'll need to substitute lower-calorie versions of some of the ingredients.

But true to Rachael Ray's roots, the choices of spices and the ease of preparation are both very good.

Rachael seems to be assuming that the male chef hasn't spent much time in the kitchen before. The recommendations are unusually simple to prepare. But when I was 20, this small book would have been just about perfect for my skill and confidence level in the kitchen.

Here are some of my favorites in the book:

Outside-in bacon cheeseburgers (I hate the mess that cheese makes when it's on top!)
    Manly Manny's chili
    Blackened chicken pizza
    Asparagus with orange and sesame
Spinach pasta with asparagus, artichoke, and arugula
Veal scaloppini with wine, mushrooms, and green olives
    Tenderloin steaks with gorgonzola
    Sirloin Bourguignonne burgers
John's haddock with bacon, onions, and tomatoes
    Steak au poivre
Cubano burgers with mango-black bean salsa
Grilled halibut tacos with guacamole sauce
Tuna steak au poivre on white beans with peppers
    Marinated grilled flank steak
Sweet 'n spicy chicken curry in a hurry
Delmonico steaks with balsamic onions and steak sauce
Chorizo and shrimp quesadillas with smoky guacamole
    Balsamic pork tenderloins
    Roasted ratatouille vegetables

As you can see, most young men will probably want to pick one or two items a week to prepare . . . perhaps for an eat-in date or for having the guys over to watch a game. The food is heartier than most would want to eat every day.

If this book is a success for you, I suggest that you graduate next to Rachael Ray 2, 4, 6, 8. That cookbook will allow you to have more variety and learn how to entertain small groups.

    Editorial Review:

Rachael says, Guys who cook are hot! Step into the kitchen with these Top 30 meals with guy appeal. This collection of greatest hits features simple recipes with big flavors, perfect for date nights, game nights, or just hangin' out.
