Imperfect, but still worthwhile 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Apparently not everyone wants to deal with cooking for a whole month at once, so Deborah's new book presents the mini-session: roughly 5 to 8 recipes all involving one central ingredient. You wait until that ingredient is on sale in bulk, buy a lot of it, and do one brief session. Stash some of the meals in the freezer, then do a different mini-session a little while later and stash a few more things away. If you still want to cook for a month at once, you just do several mini-sessions at one time.Because of this new format, she does not repeat any recipes within this book. Deborah also provides tips and hints for turning your own recipes into freezer meals or putting together your own mini-sessions.

Each mini-session includes a shopping list and preparation instructions. And of course, as before, each recipe is simple and easy, and provides quick prep instructions for when you take it out of the freezer. The recipe layout is clean and easy to follow.

As the title of the book implies, these are, in general, healthier recipes than those in her last book. They include more vegetables. There's an emphasis on lighter fare: chicken and turkey instead of beef, and even beans and vegetarian recipes. Each recipe says it makes 6 servings. Note that if you're on a diet that emphasizes portion control, they make more like 9 to 10 servings (in our experience). Most of the nutritional information is included (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol); unfortunately fiber is not included, to the sorrow of Weight Watchers members counting POINTS.

Our overall judgment is that these recipes are a bit more bland than her others, but definitely good. Bland is a minus for me, but I know it's a plus for many people. So the recipes are quite good, but if you like flavorful food you may want to experiment a bit.

Editorial Review:

Through Frozen Assets" how to cook for a day and eat for a month, Deborah Taylor-Hough became known as "the once-a-month cooking expert." She taught people how to increase time at the family table, while decreasing time in the kitchen and drive-thru lanes. In addition she saved over $24,000 in five years and taught readers how tot do the same. Now she's back with a book of low-fat meal plans that utilize the same time and cost effective methods.

Eh. 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. The recipes, for the most part, really aren't all that cheap because many of them rely heavily on meat and canned/packaged foods. More-with-less (Herald Press) gives much more economical recipes built around truly inexpensive ingredients such as rice and dried lentils.

This book does have a few redeeming qualities, though. The recipes are probably quicker than those in More-with-less, and I suspect they would be more kid-friendly (I can't say for sure because I don't have kids.) Also, I use the recipes for homemade cleaning products.

Disappointed in this cookbook 2 out of 5 stars.

I thought I would enjoy reading this cookbook and get some ideas for saving money while making my family nutritious meals. After reading this cookbook, I am disappointed in it for the following reasons:
(1) There is no nutritional information for the recipes presented. I want to make sure the recipes I cook are both economical and nutritional.
(2) There is no cost per serving information for the recipes. Yes, I know that this number would not stay accurate over time because food pricing changes, but the author does have a chart in the front of the book telling you what you would save if you cut out certain high dollar food items from your pantry. So I think you should expect to see the cost per serving for the recipes presented.
(3) The 1000 money saving tips were not as helpful as I thought they would be. For example, I did not like that the author recommended limiting your child to only one glass of Milk and one glass of juice per day. While that might be fine for older children, I think that younger ones need more milk throughout the day. I don't think you should cut back on nutrition to save money.
(4) For a book advertised as a cookbook, I thought more information could be given about the recipes (see comments above). And chapters that weren't strictly about recipes should be eliminated. I did not find the gift basket chapter or how to make household cleaners chapter, or how to make your own beauty products chapter all that helpful.
(5) As another reviewer pointed out there are many typographical errors in this book. It just seemed to be put together too quickly.

Overall, I think just buying a basic all around cookbook (such as betty crocker or Better homes and gardens family cookbook) and having the discipline to cook for your family instead of eating out would be more helpful to a family trying to save money than this book.

Sandra Lee books 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am a man with a family. I own Semi-Homemade 1 and 2 as well as grilling and slow cooking. Until then I've had some luck with cooking as long as I follow instructions to the letter. Most cookbooks seem geared to spending a half day in the kitchen which after 15 minutes is gone. Sandra's books have given me the confidence to cook. They don't take much time, they are always good, and with her books I cook meals as fine as the finest restaurant in our town. My family is impressed. Her books with their pictures are almost like a menu in which I can see what I want and then set out to make it and most importantly, know that it will be good when I'm finished. There are some minor flaws and if I can work around them, anyone can. Some of her ingredients are hard to find (pre made crepes for example. Some are just not available in our area but what difference can there be between a can of soup with roasted garlic and a can of mushroom soup with a couple of cloves of garlic added? Her books are fast becoming my bible. Thank you Sandra for giving me the feeling that I am a gourmet cook and the confidence to be one. People, especially women, seem to think that a man in his 60's couldn't possibly cook but the women who eat at my house are treating me with new respect. One more thing, we're eating at home more because I can now make everything that a restaurant does but mine is better.

Too many desserts 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This was a nice cookbook, but it has too much of a focus on desserts and not enough focus on cooking healthy foods a child will enjoy.

Somewhat disappointing fixation on sweets 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I saw Jennifer Low in a TV appearance promoting this book, where she spoke at length about the need for kids to eat nutritious food and limit their consumption of treats. She emphasized the kids eat too many treats, and by definition a treat should not be eaten non-stop. Inspired by her enthusiasm for healthy kids, I purchased this book, only to find a few main dishes or savory breads followed by over 80 (out of 100) recipes for sweets.

The recipes have moderate yields -- limiting the disappointment if they don't come out right, and controlling the amount of raw ingredients that would be put into the recipe (as she says, your kids won't use up all your eggs), but there are simply too many sweets. And many of these are serious sweets, like fudge, not fruit salad. Three of them, incidentally, call for raw eggs.

Low was mindful of creating recipes that are do-able for young children, and she keeps their limitations and the comfort level of their parents in mind. All of the recipes use the oven, not the stove. A book like Mollie Katzen's "Pretend Soup" includes a visual recipe chart for preschoolers who cannot yet read as well as a wholesome attention to things like quick sandwiches and sauces), without all the sugar.

The recipes are very tasty, and the yield sizes appropriate. I just wish she would have diversified her offerings.

Editorial Review:

Kids love to cook and help in the kitchen. This book has 100 no-knives, no-flame, from-scratch recipes that kids can easily make with the help of a caring adult. Each recipe has been tested by kids aged four and up and each dish is beautifully photographed. The book also shows how to organize a safe and fun kitchen for kids to learn cooking and to create yummy dishes.

Editorial Review:

The only cookbook that wants to get you out of the kitchen!

This is the hilarious story of Jamie Geller, a spunky young TV exec who came into marriage and kosher cooking without knowing a spatula from a saucepan. Determined to master cooking, yet pressed for time, she was dismayed to find that most cookbooks consider an hour of preparation time quick, and presumed more culinary skill than many of us have. So Jamie set out to compile her own special collection of quick and easy recipes and Quick & Kosher is the result of her quest.

This one-of-a-kind cookbook contains more than 160 recipes requiring no more than 15 minutes to prepare, 120 full-color photos, clear step-by-step instructions, reliable prep and cooking times, tips and techniques, and advice on pairing wines with various dishes. Recipes range from traditional to exotic, and are well indexed and cross-referenced.

Several special sections such as Setting up Your Kitchen, Secrets of the 15-Minute Chef and Shopping Like an Expert are the result of extensive insider interviews with food professionals who helped facilitate Jamie's path to culinary mastery. These sections offer practical answers to the questions you've always wanted to ask: how do I buy meat, fish, produce, groceries, and wine?

Is this a cookbook? An autobiography? A kitchen handbook for brides? It is all of these and more, for Quick & Kosher will amuse, inspire and teach even skilled cooks a thing or two. I wrote Quick & Kosher says Jamie Geller, because you and I are in the same boat. We want to serve up something tantalizing for dinner, but between kids, careers, and carpools, we have no time to patchka!

I Could Have Used This Twenty-some Years Ago 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

As a culinary-challenged Mom coming from a long line of terrible cooks, I was happy to stumble upon this. Even after many years my cooking is still hit and miss. I confess I didn't know even one eighth of Mrs. Mills' "Mom Tips." Shame on me. Happily I salted the corn water (makes the corn tough) and cooked the garlic on high heat (Wow! I used garlic, how creative.) So with my second-oldest son a week away from moving into his own place, I figured he needed some desperate help. Cup-a-noodles and Jalapeno Lays are his steady diet outside of the college cafeteria. And help he will get with this fine book, if only he will apply himself. It has the right touch. It's thorough but not daunting, has lots of info but isn't confusing. Plus there's plenty of comfort food to go around. (Pot roast included. When's the last time I made pot roast?) It's a good idea presented lightheartedly. And I actually got a "thanks, Mom" when I gave it to him.

Editorial Review:

"I had always known of the existence of the kitchen," begins Kevin Mills. "It was the room with the fridge in it. As for cooking, it was somebody else's problem. It was Mom's." When Mills went to college, however, it became his problem as well. After extensive phone coaching from Mom, he learned enough rudimentary recipes to keep from starving. And now you can learn them as well, along with a handful of not-so-rudimentary ones.

First came A Man, a Can, a Plan: 50 Great Guy Meals Even You Can Make. The Sunday Star-Ledger cheered it as a "foolproof, not to mention spill-proof guide to manly success in the kitchen." And the Detroit News exclaimed, "Dude, this cookbook is for you."

Next came A Man, a Can, a Grill: 50 No-Sweat Meals You Can Fire Up Fast. Cookbook author Andrew Schloss, who wrote Cooking with Three Ingredients and Dinner's Ready, called the recipes "easy, flavorful...streamlined and smart. Real food-so good that no one will ever guess your secret is in the can."

Now there's A Man, a Can, a Microwave-and all those "dudes" who helped put the "Grill" book on the New York Times how-to bestseller list will be pleased to know that David Joachim and the editors of Men's Health haven't lost a beat. The 50 guy-friendly, nuke-able meals using packaged ingredients are fun to make and great to eat-and include such tasty dishes as "Italian One-Dish Fish," "Teriyaki Beef with Broccoli," and "Painless Paella." With step-by-step recipes and full-color photos, A Man, a Can, a Microwave, like the previous books in the series, is a perfect gift for anyone learning to cope in the kitchen. Make sure he has a can opener-and a hearty appetite!
