Quick & Easy Japanese Cuisine for Everyone 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have been living in Japan for 3 years and we are about to move back to the U.S. One of my Japanese friends pulled out her copy of this book to give me some recipes. She actually bought it when she lived in the U.S. so she would have English language versions of recipes to give her American friends. She found this book to be very close to her mother's and grandmothers' way of cooking. The recipes are easy to follow and the illustrations of preparation techniques are very helpful even for someone without any prior knowledge of Japanese food preparation.

possibly the best cookbook I have ever bought 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book from a Japanese bookstore in "Japan Town" in San Francisco on vacation. I am online now buying more for my friends. I compared this book with every other english language Japanese cookbooks in the store (and there were MANY). I found this one to be superior to the rest as it contained everything I would need to prepare meals. I should mention I have lived in Japan for 5 years and have a good feel for what is authentic. This book has allowed me to create some very nice meals at home approaching resturant quality of those found in Japan. I expecially like the pictures that show all the steps of the preparation including pictures of the ingredients. Also included is a section that shows how food is served (presentation on table).

Honestly, I don't see how you can go wrong buying this book. Its inexpensive and contains EVERY aspect you need to be sucessful: tools and utensils, knife skills, ingredients, recipies, and presentation.

Now I just wish I could find similar books for Greek, Italian, Thai, and so on...

Even those unfamiliar with Japanese cooking can follow the steps in this book and feel confident in achieving great tasting, authentic results.

Editorial Review:

For the legions of harried moms who have tossed in the dishtowel on cooking healthy meals (or any meals!), the easiest-ever guide for bringing super nutrition back to the kitchen.

Getting dinner on the table night after night can be a challenge. So it’s no surprise that busy moms often rely on fast food, takeout, and convenience meals like macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and fries. The kids love it but the drawback is that little twinge of guilt moms feel every time they feed their family another not-so-healthy meal. At the end of the day, many children end up with a poor diet high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories … a major factor in the rising rates of obesity.

Finally, here are realistic guidelines designed to give families a healthy meal makeover.
The Moms lay out a 5-Step Meal Makeover Plan, explaining how to market good nutrition to kids, establish food rules, and make life easier in the kitchen.
In The Best of the Bunch chapter they reveal which brands of kid convenience foods–hot dogs, frozen pizza, and more–are the best tasting and most nutritious ones out there.
The Moms show how to stock a healthy pantry and whip up delicious anytime meals using pantry staples.
They even serve up 120 reworked recipes for family favorites such as Fast-as-Boxed Macaroni & Cheese, Squishy Squash Lasagna, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sweet Potato Fries, and Chocolate Pudding with Toppers.

Another great one from Lorna Sass 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I've been very happy with all of Lorna Sass' cookbooks (she even got me into using a pressure cooker!). This one is no exception - lots of neat quick soups, salads, stews and other dishes that don't require a lot of work to prepare or (especially nice) clean up since they're done mostly in one pot/pan. Lots of variety - dips/spreads, curries, stirfry, grain/pasta dishes, and straight vegetables too. Really a good cookbook to have onhand for when you don't feel like cooking up a big deal but want something satisfying.

A splash of orange juice, a touch of cinnamon, and a few sliced leeks transform handy frozen spinach and a can of highest-quality lentils into an exotic Orange-Scented Lentil Ragout to satisfy the most sophisticated palate -- in minutes.

Editorial Review:

College kids living on their own for the first time are startled to realize that now they have to cook for themselves. This attractive spiral-bound book is exactly what they need, serving up easy recipes and basic cooking methods for beginners. The resulting meals are nutritious and appetizing, more healthful and less expensive than relying on the local pizza parlor or Burger King every time hunger pangs strike. Practical advice and helpful tips instruct busy college kids on everything from food and equipment shopping and sharing a kitchen to scrambling an egg and preparing a complete, well-balanced meal. Recipes are divided into these general categories:

Munchies * Breakfast * Main Courses * Pasta and Rice * Soups * Veggies and Salads * Desserts *

Munchies include a great array of snacks and finger foods, from garlicky humus to pizza-flavored popcorn. Breakfast recipes include egg dishes, French toast, pancakes, and others. Main courses range from simple grilled sandwiches to more ambitious entrees like roasted chicken with lemon and herbs. Vegetarian dishes include tasty Portobello mushrooms with garlic mayonnaise, pan-fried Asian dumplings with dipping sauce, couscous and veggie salad, and many others. Among the dessert recipes are instructions for making brownies, cookies, chocolate cake, apple crisp, and a remarkably easy pumpkin pie. Recipes come with a special trouble-shooting and mistake-avoiding feature called Don't Let This Happen to You. Attractive line illustrations and a handy index help make this book a godsend for hungry college kids. Makes a good high school graduation gift!

Two Tumbs Up!! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I bought the entire series and was very impressed. I was tired of baking cookies every Christmas and thought I would try something new. I am SO glad that I gave "mixes" instead of stressing over baking. The responce I got was TWO THUMBS UP!

I made over two dozen mixes in two hours! The most difficult part was cutting the labels and decorations! I bought fabric that didn't fray, elastic jeweler's thread and gold bells. The books come with six receipe cards to attach to the jar!

The only suggesting I have is to buy the supplies at Costco and buy bulk. You'll need 10# more pounds than you think. I found myself running back to the store two times. For four dozen mixes (of cookies and bars) you'll need 40# of flour 20# sugar 15# brown sugar plus hoards of chopped walnuts and various "chips". I found that I needed far more white chocolate chips than anticipated. I experimented by adding different flavored chips (peanut butter, andes mint chips). Buy the WIDE mouth jars - you can buy a "funnel" at Walmart for $1.50. My local grocier ran out of wide mouths so I bought regular jars and had to make a paper funnel (pain in the...). Now-a-days, when you buy the wide mouth jars the lids are attached (no precleaning).

I live at high altitude and made adjustments to the cookie mixes, still they baked flat. For high altitude - stick to the bars and breads.

The only thing I would do differently: Photo copy the receipe cards so you don't have to recreate them on the computer. You can buy heavy stock paper (20#) and go to Kinkos and reprint them.

Editorial Review:

This book is filled with recipes to make your own gifts. Each mix fits into a quart jar. The book even includes tags complete with recipient directions with each recipe. Just cut it out, personalize and attach to the jar. Fun to make and affordable, gifts in a jar make great gifts for neighbors, teachers and friends!

Editorial Review:

A Master Chef's Signature Book
Available in paperback for the first time in a decade, The New York Times 60-Minute Gourmet is the bestselling cookbook that catapulted Pierre Franey into the front ranks of American chefs. After a successful career as a restaurant chef, Franey became a food writer for The New York Times in 1975, accepting the challenge to write a regular column featuring recipes that would take less than an hour to prepare. Through his column and the cookbooks that soon followed, Franey created a national sensation with his revolutionary style of cooking, and American kitchens haven't been the same since. The presentation of quick, healthy, and enjoyable meals was a revelation, introducing the home cook to choices beyond spending hours in the kitchen or settling for "fast food." This cookbook -- the first that collected his New York Times recipes -- captures all that was great about Pierre Franey's cooking: fresh, flavorful, low-fat ingredients, ease of preparation, and the injunction "Don't spend all evening in the kitchen!"  As a step-by-step guide to better cooking and delicious eating, this great cookbook allows all cooks to employ Pierre Franey's signature methods and create memorable meals in their own homes.
