Very helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

I have several healthy cookbooks. Her books are my favorite. I have most of the ingredients on hand. Yes--some of it is basic, but sometimes it is good to go back to the basics. I have not tried a recipe in here that I did not like. Very practical.

Healthy and quicl 5 out of 5 stars.

Have tried only one chicken recipe (marindate) and it was delicious. I highly recommend this book. The pictures are excellent.

Great book :-> 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book is fantastic. It's beautifully presented and for some reason, with each of her books, I feel like I can cook like she does. All the recipes look easy (and the ones I've tried are) and they look delicious. Each is tempting and makes you want to get into that kitchen.
After an introduction, there are various chapters; Soup, Salads, Vegetables, Roasts and Simmers, Pasta Noodles and Rice, Pies and Tarts and then Tools. There is a glossary too and conversion charts which can be a great help.
So far I've tried the Grilled Asparagus with Balsamic Butter, Baked Chicken and Pumpkin Risotto, Vietnamese Noodle Salad and the Spinach and Fetta Pie. Everything has been so yum and easy to prepare because her instruction is clear and concise.
All of her books are worth taking a look at and in each one there is something delicious for everyone. You would be hard pressed to find that you couldn't make something from one of these amazing recipes. I highly recommend this book. It's great.

Editorial Review:

In Modern Classics, Australia's bestselling food writer Donna Hay takes the food from the past we love the most and makes it irresistibly new. Then she looks at what's the best of the new and turns it into a cooking classic.

Coleslaw gets a well-deserved makeover while free-form ratatouille tart enters the classics category. Chicken soup comes of age again while the fresh, crunchy and healthy rice paper roll makes its debut.

Modem Classics is set to become the contemporary commonsense cookbook of a new generation and an indispensable handbook to those of cooking age now. More practical inspiration from Donna Hay.

Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills. 4 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under the entries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.

Every cook could learn something from the "Tiptionary", but I think beginning or moderately experienced cooks will find it most useful. The subjects, themselves, are pretty basic. "Gourmet" subjects are few, and ethnic foods not at all. The entries are thorough, though, and would be helpful to an experienced chef if he/she doesn't happen to have experience with a particular food that is included. The emphasis is on instruction in "The Food Lover's Tiptionary", whereas the author's popular "Food Lover's Companion" emphasizes definitions. The "Food Lover's Companion" describes nearly 6,000 culinary terms -ethnic, gourmet, and obscure included.

Editorial Review:

Both experienced and novice cooks will love this A-to-Z guide packed with more than 6,000 tips, shortcuts and other culinary wisdom cookbooks never tell you. Find all the answers you'll ever need to a universe of cooking quandaries and questions on hundreds of subjects, including foods, beverages, kitchen equipment, cooking techniques, entertaining ideas and smart ways to use leftovers. Plus, there are loads of quick and easy reference charts, a handy system of cross-referencing and well over a hundred shorthand-style recipes.

Wow! My book shows wearout faster than other cookbooks! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This is best WOK cookbook I ever have! This book gives me "100" ways to make a dinner. You just need to set up with different bottles of sauces, vinegar, etc., then you are ready in no time with any meats or veggies. I like the most is to clean up my refridger, especially the veggie drawers. If I see the vegetables are on verge to get spoiled, I take them and cook up with thawed frozen meats. We always are suprised with how the dinner comes out!
About WOK pan, yeah, it is true that Carpenter suggests one with long handle. I have a short handles one I received as free thru Chef's Catalog. I almost burned myself with this cuz it's very speedy cooking with this WOK FAST. My husband gave me a Calphalon Anodized Wok with long handle last Christmas. It is very comfy to cook with and no needs to use hot pads. One funny thing is about rice. I have to set up and cook rice in the rice cooker or pressure cooker 5-10minutes before I start cooking the wok dinner OR we will have dinner ready while waiting for rice to be done.
I already ordered Hot Pasta and Hot Chicken. I will see if they are the same with this book.
If you like to spice up your life with dinners, GO for this book!

Editorial Review:

The wildly popular culinary team of Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison prepare robustly flavored meals from the versatile wok, served in a flash—the perfect fare for weeknight cooking. With their emphasis on short ingredient lists and plenty of make-ahead tips, the recipes in WOK FAST are tailored to accomodate tight schedules, without sacrificing flavor. Dinners include Blackened Shrimp with Tangerine Garlic Essence, Crunchy Celery Chicken with Peanut Glaze, Baby Bok Choy in Spicy Garlic Sauce, and Cantonese Wild Mushroom Pasta. A delicious collection of marinades and sauces can be paired with any of the recipes, creating endless flavor variations. So grab your wok and set your table—dinner will be served in minutes!

Upgraded Kid Food for Adults Who Want Zest and Beautiful Appearance in a Portable Edition 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

How many Rachael Ray cookbooks do you own? That's an important question when considering this book because you may already have some of these recipes in other cookbooks (such as Rachael Ray: 365) by this delightfully speedy provider of zesty dishes.

Here's another question: How much "fixing up" will your kids tolerate? My four were always on the conservative side. Here's an example. Our oldest would go into a restaurant and order a grilled cheese sandwich as follows (and this was before he ever saw Jack Nicholson's famous scene in Five Easy Pieces): "Here's how to prepare my grilled cheese sandwich. Put American cheese slices on plain white bread. Do not toast or grill the bread. Do not add tomatoes, ham, or anything else. Put a small container of mayonnaise on the side, but not touching the bread."

Almost all of these dishes are too adventuresome for what our kids would have tolerated with a few exceptions: cheesy popcorn, chicken cutlets, chicken and stars soup, chicken and dumplings, stuffed potatoes, and fettuccini all'Alfredo. So if your kids groove on Kraft macaroni and cheese and see vegetables as evil, they may not be ready for these dishes,

However, if you enjoy kid favorites . . . and would like a more adult version, you'll be pleased very much by this book and its recipes. The ingredients are well chosen, and the herb and spice selections are inspired. Consider the quesadilla recipe. Most people put in some American cheese, diced chicken, and perhaps some cut up tomato bits. Ms. Ray adds a little finely chopped onion, a palmful of chopped cilantro leaves, a Serrano pepper, coarse salt, a half pound of chorizo (smoked sausage from Spain or Mexico), a touch of barbecue sauce and a blend of Mexican cheeses. As you can see, that's a novel and interesting dish. Not all the dishes are upgraded as much, but there's always at least a little element of sophistication added in time-efficient ways.

Be aware that this book has only 30 recipes in it (along with some side dishes). But it's quite compact. You could easily fit it into a purse or pocket to take along to cook at an event where you've been asked to prepare food away from home . . . or when you are on your summer vacation if you prepare meals sometimes.

One of the beauties of this little gem can be found in the close-up photographs of the dishes. With these visual images to stimulate you, the food presentation will undoubtedly be improved. It just made my mouth water to look at these luscious images.

Dig in!

Editorial Review:

Rachael guarantees, Yes, your kids will eat it! These Top 30 kid-friendly meals, a collection of her greatest hits, will have the whole family asking for seconds. Break the weeknight routine with hassle-free cooking and delicious results.

Book is okay 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I have only tried a few recipies (maybe 5), but most of the ones we have tried we haven't really liked. Most of the recipies are for the 3-4 qt slow cookers and we have a 6 qt. slow cooker. Therefore it is kind of hard trying to make the recipie work without it burning.

A Great Slow cooker recipe book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very good slow cooker recipe book. The recipes are very easy to follow, and pretty much everything we have made has come out good.

Best Slow Cooker Book of all 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after I bought a slow cooker that comes with three different size crock inserts. Every recipe I've tried so far I would rate 4-5 stars. Most ingredients are already in my cupboard or local supermarket. Recipes are fairly true to size and have worked when I have cut them in half. I'm having a lot of fun working my way thru this book.
