Very Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I've loved other Southern Living cookbooks and read some reviews that greatly overrated this book's appeal. I wasn't able to preview a copy at my library and was very unhappy with the results. Boring pedestrian recipes that might be quick and easy but look tasteless and boring. I was hoping for some quick innovative ideas but instead was presented with many recipes that involved mixing "a can of" with processed frozen foods. Yuck!!! Definitely not up to the usual standards of Southern Living.

Hit and Miss, Mostly Miss 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this cookbook from my Mom as a gift. I thought it would be great since I am a student on a budget, and buying 5 ingredients seemed to be very economical. As it turns out, the ingredients for each recipe are indeed easy to find and easy to work with (at least on the recipes I have made). Granted I have only cooked 13 recipes out of this book, which is barely scratching the surface.

In any case, out of the 13 recipes I have tried, only 2 of them have resulted in something that I would make again. The Quick and Easy Lasagne was great, although I added italian sausage and ground sirloin to the recipe. The recipe overall was not much of a deviation from how I would normally make lasagne, so I was sure it would be fine. The next one is the Enchilada Soup. That is some of the best soup I have ever made! Goes great with a chicken quesadilla or even just some crackers. It is also incredibly fast to make. In this case I cheated a little by getting a rotisseri chicken, shredding it the day before, and putting half of it aside for the soup. I just added chipotle seasoning, and it came out great!

Unfortunatly, that leaves 11 other recipes that I have tried and did not like. I had high hopes for the Late-Evening Breakfast Dinner (I think that is the name), however after trying it three different times and wasting a dozen eggs, a package of english muffins, and two cans of corned beef hash, I decided it was time to give up on that one. Getting the eggs to stay on the hashbrown/english muffin base was near impossible, even after making a hashbrown cradle. Although it didn't seem to matter anyway since since baking the eggs turned them into rubber, and would make the already toasted english muffins into frisbees.

The other big disappointment was the Spicy Oven Fried Chicken. I don't have a deep fryer or an iron skillet, so frying chicken (properly anyway) was out of the question. This recipe gave me hope that maybe I could make something that was close to fried chicken. I think the cornflakes killed it for me though. They just didn't seem to taste right after they had been baked. The chicken also ended up with dry spots on the crust, and yes I did add the optional oil to help prevent that. I think panko bread crumbs or even crushed croutons would have been a better option then corn flakes. The buttermilk and hot sauce mixture is something I would carry over though, it added a nice kick.

I won't get to far into the other recipes that I tried, but suffice it say that I am thus far not impressed with this cook book. I will give a few more recipes a try, like the Monkey Bread recipe, but I don't have high expectations for any of them. Maybe its just me, but I have been cooking on my own for the last six years (I'm only 24 cut me some slack :P), and I have yet to have such a run of bad recipes from one cookbook. I am no Alton Brown, but I know I don't suck bad enough to ruin 11 recipes in a row.

Editorial Review:

These five-star recipes were specifically selected and perfected by renowned cookbook authors and editors Gwen McKee and Barbara Moseley as the 500 Best of the Best 5-ingredient recipes to be found anywhere.
The outstanding recipes in this book will make you realize how delicious and easy 5-ingredient recipes can be. Big flavor with few ingredients: Ten-Minute Santa Fe Soup, Creamy Sherbet Margarita, Shrimp Scampi Pasta in a Flash and the Best Baby Backs Evah!

Great little book for the grilling man in your life. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my BF who loves to grill, but also loves to pack on the Calories. He loves to cook for me, but often I can only eat a bite or two because he likes to slather oil and butter. I thought the pictures of meant done "lighter" might inspire a more harmonious meal time. It definitely worked and he loves the book. He's tried 5 or 6 ideas and they all came out delicious. Plus, it's lighter so we're both happy.

Sensation Summer Cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.

Bought a new grill last weekend and received this cookbook from Amazon yesterday. LOVE it! Cooking Light Grilling is filled with delicious-sounding, healthy recipes for summertime meals. I can't wait to try some of the yummy ideas... like Portobello Burgers... maybe served with some grilled fruit on the side? There are 57 recipes in the book, and I'm sure I'll try nearly every one before Labor Day!

Editorial Review:

This new volume combines 20 years experience and 58 of the best grilling recipes from Cooking Light magazine, all tested multiple times to ensure that theyre easy to prepare, supremely healthy, and, of course, incredibly delicious. Where to put it, thats the question. In the kitchen, where youll use it daily, or on the coffee table with your other fine art objects? (Yes, its that good looking.)

This is one great cookbook to have especially for busy moms (cooks) in your house. A couple of the recipes needed a little tweaking here and there but for the most part every recipe I've tried has been great! I love the details with pictures, grocery lists and ideas for sides with each meal. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Great! Great! Great! 5 out of 5 stars.

Everything that I have tried in this book has been great!! It lists great short cuts (ie. the roasted chicken recipe that you can cook, chop up and freeze, later adding to any recipe that calls for cooked chicken) It has a little bit of everything in it!! Great!!!

Editorial Review:

You're young, you're hungry, you're clueless

The kitchen looms before you like something from a bad horror film. There's food in there, but then what? It'll have to be cooked... or at least peeled. Probably both. It's enough to scare even the foolhardy, but then so is a diet of macaroni and cheese. And you can't afford to keep ordering pizza. Aaarghh!

Relax! You're not alone. Author Evelyn Raab (mom to two teenage sons) understands that the kitchen is alien territory, and she is going to teach you everything you need to know to produce something deliciously edible out of actual ingredients -- in other words, cook -- and live to tell the tale.

Incredibly thorough, never condescending, and with a dash of humor, Clueless in the Kitchen leads culinary neophytes through the entire range of kitchen experience -- from cleaning a stove and outfitting a first kitchen (cheaply), to unplugging a drain and identifying that stuff in the bulk-food bins. Two hundred easy-to-follow recipes show how to make all kinds of simple and scrumptious dishes for every meal and occasion, beginning with "Breakfast: A Cruel Joke" and ending with Snacks and Munchies." There's even a chapter devoted exclusively to the "Vehemently Vegetarian."

And there's more! Each recipe is coded with an icon symbolizing vegetarian meals, cheap eats, couch potato, mom, or family food, food to impress, and snacks and munchies. And useful menu planners will help you tailor the perfect meal to every guest, whether that guest is your shallow but fun boy/girlfriend, your aunt Gladys, or (gasp!) your entire family.

Whether you're living on your own for the very first time or you're just on your own for dinner, Clueless in the Kitchen will be the first and -- hopefully -- only guide you will ever need. You may never eat macaroni and cheese again!

A Good Starting Point for Expanding Your Stir Frying Skills 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I purchased this book because we've become fans of stir frying thanks to a new wok and the relative ease and healthiness of such foods. However, we were getting tired of our own creations, mostly because we lacked the creativity or inspiration to broaden our abilities and capabilities in stir frying.

This book has provided the inspiration we needed. It is full of many recipes that cover a broad range of possibilities. While we made the typical mistake of assuming that stir-frying means Asian food, this book provides more than just Asian cooking. I enjoy seeing ideas for stir fries that have a Middl Eastern, Moroccan, or Latin flare.

I also find the introductory chapters useful as a guide for some of the "theory" behind stir frying. I am a cook that sees recipes as more of a guide and likes to improvise. Some discussion at the intro regarding ingredients and a nice section on stir fry sauces really makes this book endless. Not only do you have the 300 recipes presented, you can create an infinite number of recipes on your own. The limits are only in your imagination. Fortunately, this book provides a lot of inspiration to expand on your imagination and stir fry to your heart's content.
