Great cookbook!!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I love this cookbook. It's my favorite Gooseberry Patch cookbook thus far. I plan my meals a month at a time and shop according to my list of meals for the month. I was able to plan 45 days of meals from this one cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and have, like the title states, "Five ingredients or less", which makes the planning and preparing so much easier! I highly recommend this cookbook.

If you can only get one cook book (ever!), GET THIS ONE!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My mother-in-law got me this cookbook for Christmas last year (what kind of a signal is that?! lol) and I love it! I know I'm not the greatest cook out there, but this cookbook has such great recipes (and so incredibly easy!!!) that even I get compliments on my meals, salads, appetizers, and desserts! My favorite is the 3 ingredient Speedy Peanut Butter Cookies--a big hit at my daughter's Vacation Bible School!

If you can only get one cook book (ever!), GET THIS ONE!!!

Hilarious parody...
When my copy of Every Freaking Day with Rachell Ray came in, I had to stop everything and look at it. Then I called my daughter/best friend who also had just received her copy, and we began to discuss several pages. She would call out a page number, and I would quickly turn to it. Then something would catch my eye, and I would suggest a page. We laughed and giggled for almost an hour. I actually thought I was looking at Rachel Ray when I first opened the book. The woman in the photos really does look like her. Now for the review....
Every Freaking Day with Rachell Ray is a delightful parody. Watch for the page with the hand gestures; it is so Rachelish! I have a love hate relationship with Rachel Ray. I love her most of the time; however, sometimes she just plain gets on my nerves. One page is filled with how Rachel measures, how she preps, and how she talks. My favorite Rachel Ray show is $40.00 a Day. There is even a page in Every Freaking Day with Rachell Ray dedicated to that show. Ladies this is not a cookbook. This is not meant to be a serious book. Be prepared to laugh until you cry. This book is not for you if you cannot handle parody.

Editorial Review:

Hey kids! If 30-minute meals are good, wouldn't 30-second meals be even better? You bet they would! And EVERY FREAKING! DAY WITH RACHELL RAY makes this dream a reality!

This 64-page, full-color parody of the super-caffeinated media phenomenon Rachael Ray doesn't merely mimic the tone of the megastar's monthly magazine, daily talk show, multiple Food Network shows and countless ad campaigns, it nails it!

Bestselling author Elizabeth Hilts captures Rachael's perky exuberance, her "casual" approach to cooking and her irrepressible and wholly unique Rayisms.

What could be better than an authentic Italian dinner like this that takes only thirty minutes to prepare?

Little Ciabatta Toasts with Ricotta and Salami
Skillet Breaded Pork Chops with Rosemary
Cherry Tomatoes with Leeks and Thyme
Dried Figs in Red Wine

From years of cooking in her Ciao Italia television kitchen, Mary Ann Esposito understands what many people with busy lives, as well as those just beginning to learn their way around the kitchen, want to know: How do I prepare an authentic Italian meal without spending hours in the kitchen? In Ciao Italia, Pronto!, Mary Ann shows everyone how to prepare an authentic Italian meal in thirty minutes with more than eighty mouthwatering recipes from the entire gamut of Italian cuisine. She’s gathered together a treasure trove of antipasti, soups, pasta dishes, main courses, vegetable side dishes, pizzas, calzones, and deserts that make easy and delicious meals for family and friends. Besides recipes for dishes like quick chicken cacciatore, macaroni with a rich lamb sauce or Cornish game hens with tomatoes and potatoes, Mary Ann shares her how-tos of cooking Italian quickly and authentically:

· how to maximize your time in the grocery store

· how to create a Pronto! pantry filled with staples

· how to have a cooking plan and multitask as the preparation gets underway

· how to get several meals out of a single preparation

· how to use seasonal fruits and vegetables to greatest effect.

For good measure, Mary Ann adds a dozen Pronto! menus to show readers how to combine the dishes, as well as a select list of mail order and online sources for specialty items. So, instead of bringing home fast food or prepared frozen dishes from the grocery story, involve the whole family, spend thirty minutes with Mary Ann, and bring a little la dolce vita---as Italians would say, “the good life”--- to your kitchen. Without fuss or bother, Mary Ann Esposito shows you how to bring an authentic taste of Italy to the table for your friends and family.

Excellent Family Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

IF your kids won't eat broccoli under any circumstances, they won't like it in a recipe in this cookbook, either. Don't raise your kids to be picky eaters. Teach them to be willing to try something new, even if they didn't like it before.

This wholesome cookbook gives creative flair to things like grilled cheese or pizza. My son loves this cookbook and loves to find something new for lunch or dinner. So far, we haven't found one we haven't liked yet. We like the fact that everything is made from scratch and not with fast food mixes and unhealthy products.

Note: My son loves asparagus and broccoli.. and I know many other children that like veggies as well.

Yummy yummy for my tummy 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far, better than Family Fun cookbook in many ways
Pros: the book is spirial
Pictures of the recipe
Varaitions of reicpes
Cons: Some of the recipies are a little out there
Some of the recipies arent exactly healthy. Need to be modified

Recipies that I have tried: sneak it to them broccoli soup, excellent and easy to make and the minestroni soup. People wanted the recipe. I do think this cookbook should be a staple in any family library.

My wife loves it. She has been using only this book since she got it. Great meals!!! She's lost 5 lbs. since she started using it.Cooking 'Round the Clock: Rachael Ray's 30-Minute Meals

A Great Cookbook for a Person Who's New to Cooking and Willing to Buy Lots of Ingredients 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In Cooking 'Round the Clock, the irrepressible Rachael Ray fills every hour with fun in the kitchen and joy in the eating. This woman is a whirlwind! She gets you off to a fast start on that conclusion when she relates how she didn't sleep as a child . . . but would sneak down to cook in the middle of the night. And she's still a night owl, often writing her many cookbooks while you and I are abed. True to her roots, everything in this book can be produced in 30 minutes or less. Don't let the long ingredient lists fool you on that point: Items are mostly mixed together and quickly prepared at that point.

The book is organized around times of the day, mostly providing short menus, but sometimes varying that approach with a list of recipes. Here are the sections:

7-11 a.m. Rise & Shiners has sections on seven forms of scrambled eggs, a champagne menu, three kinds of hash, three sweet breakfast items, continental breakfast breads, and heavier dishes (oatmeal, ham steaks, and toast stacks with eggs and bacon)

11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Lunch delivers three brunch menus, seven lunch menus, two great heavy-duty salads, lots of sandwich recipes, three soups, a taste of Italian and French food

4-7 p.m. Early-Bird Specials covers 18 menus with a variety of classic American and ethnic (English, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican) dishes plus three hearty "stoups"

7-9 p.m. Sit-Down Suppers has eleven menus cover the range from steak to burgers while hitting turkey, chicken, and fish in between. There are four other recipes (chili, chicken and couscous, chicken salad, and polenta and mozzarella)

7-12 p.m. TV Dinners & Snacks is filled with the foods we all eat in from of the television (nachos, pizza, subs, popcorn, dips, appetizer munchies, and various wraps)

9-12 Bistro Meals takes you on a world tour of great eating menus (bourbon-orange chicken, tuna marinara, duck salad, Cuban-spiced pork, and French-style cod)

12-7 a.m. Late-Nite Bites is all recipes (7 kinds of tartines for the toaster oven, quick "gnocchi," pita-based pizzas for the toaster oven, more eggs dishes, Mexican coffee, cheese-based entrees like welsh rarebit, and pasta carbonara)

Are you feeling full yet?

Unlike her earlier cookbooks, I found the flavor experiences in most of these recipes to be less adventuresome. But there were quite a few recipes where I was intrigued by the combination of flavor and speed that she offers:

Green Eggs and Ham (pp. 30-31)
Oatmeal Cookie Pancakes (p. 43)
Orange and Almond Scones (p. 45)
Mixed Greens with Balsamic Vinegar and Strawberries (p. 64)
Smoked Turkey Waldorf Salad (p. 65)
Curried Cashew-Chicken Salad (p. 66)
Shrimp on Chicken Caesar Romaine Lettuce Wraps (p. 69)
Fruit Soup (p. 70)
Bombay Brunch Wrap (p. 79)
Cobb Sandwiches (p. 80)
30-Minute Shepherd's Pie (p. 94)
Baked Stuffed Flounder (p. 108)
Shrimp Newburg (p. 131)
Mixed Green Salad with Gorgonzola Dressing (p. 137)
Chicken, Chorizo, and Tortilla "Stroup" (p. 148)
Gorgonzola and Sage Sirloin Burgers (p. 151)
Chili Verde (p. 154)
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Crudités (p. 167)
Bittersweet Dijon-Dressed Salad (p. 183)
Haddock with Bacon, Onions, and Tomatoes (p. 184)
Gorgonzola and Walnut Spaghetti (p. 186)
Cuban-Spiced Pork Tenderloin and Soffrito Rice (pp. 202-203)
Veggie Scrambles with Pesto (p. 224)
Green Ranch-Hand Eggs (p. 228)
Rigatoni Carbonara (pp. 236-237)

The rest of the dishes seemed potentially interesting, but seemed a bit too close to the standards to provide much excitement of variety. But these could easily be staples for those who don't yet know how to do the standards.

If you love turkey-based items and lots of Italian sauces and cheeses, you'll be quite pleased with what you find here.

But you won't save much time unless you look over the recipes you want to try and assemble the ingredients in advance. My cupboard and refrigerator don't have much in the way of items like fresh ginger root, scallions, cream, fresh parsley, brandy, nutmeg, garlic pickles, sausage, whole-berry cranberry sauce, pierogi, kielbasa, kale, sauerkraut, fresh chives, or fresh dill. These are just some of the ingredients listed on pages 92-100.

I'm pretty sure I can buy all of these at my supermarket, but I would need to put a special shopping list to be able to launch into a 30-minute meal preparation.

Enjoy!

Sandra Lee's Best Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Love this book-tons of gorgeous photos make you want to run to the grocery store and cook everything in the book after you run to the decorating store & create the tablescapes.

Wasn't What I Expected 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This cook book has a couple pages for each holiday with only a few recipes on each page. It also shows more pages on how to decorate for a party than cooking. I thought it was going to be a whole cook book on meals.

Way too much trouble to create these "gatherings" 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I gave the cookbook 3 stars because it has beautiful photography, layout is nice, and it's a well-done book. Having said all that...

I just don't see anyway to re-create these productions Sandra Lee has made. These tablescapes are elaborate, the food is time consuming to prepare, and then to purchase all these items would cost a small fortune.

The Easter tablescape involved a ton of moss, hollowing out eggs and writing cutsy stuff on them and then cooking for 3 days to make it all happen. And I don't even know where you'd buy all that ribbon.

I love most of Sandra Lee's books because they are budget conscience but this is just too much. Even the recipes require lots of ingredients, even if some are shortcuts, as well as lengthy cooking instuctions. There's no way I could see actually doing the things she describes. Many of the instructions were vague.

Now, the cookbook itself is a work of art. It's very pretty and would made a nice gift because of the pictures. But in reality you'll never make any of this stuff. If you're truly a connoisseur of party planning you will go with a different book. Seems she's trying to be more Martha Stewart everyday.

Sandra Lee has marketed herself for being budget conscious so for those of us who are then you would purchase Betty Crocker "Buffets", not this one. This cookbook is not budget friendly. I actually recommend this cookbook more of a bartending guide than anything. She had more time and space devoted to the cocktails in their elaborate stemware than any other aspect of the book.

Editorial Review:

  • New York Times best-selling author Sandra Lee brings her approach to entertaining.
  • With more than 40 party themes featuring easy to duplicate, beautifully decorated and artfully arranged tabletop settings for every celebratory occasion imaginable.
  • To round out every theme, Sandra offers 100 sensational Semi-Homemade recipes for quick and delicious appetizers, desserts, and signature cocktails-perfectly suited for each specific party theme.

Editorial Review:

Affable Essex boy Jamie Oliver continues the British culinary invasion with The Naked Chef Takes Off, the smashing follow-up to his bestselling The Naked Chef. For Oliver, the young Food Network import, food is all about "passing the potatoes around the table, ripping up some bread, licking my fingers, getting tipsy, and enjoying the company of good friends and family," and cooking up "what real people at home really want." The thing is, "real people" picking up cookbooks are often seeking easy-to-follow recipes. But that's not Oliver's bag. The layout of many of his recipes may frustrate traditional-cookbook readers--instructions often appear as one big chunk of conversational text with nary an ingredient or measurement in clear view--but that's part of the charm of Oliver's cookbooks. His commentary, tips, and cooking steps come across in a very approachable, colloquial style and leave plenty of room for individual flair or improvisation. Oliver's enthusiasm for cooking is infectious; the recipes and chapter introductions spill out like a best mate who just can't stop talking about food and how much fun--and simple--it can be to whip up these spectacular dishes.

Oliver kicks things off by stocking your pantry with best-quality ingredients, and he's an apostle for fresh herbs, raving on about growing and drying your own at home. "Morning Glory" is a chapter full of dishes like Midnight Pan-Cooked Breakfast (bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages, and eggs brought together in the "biggest nonstick pan available" and sopped up with buttered toast--a rustic one-dish cure for any oncoming hangover). "Tapas, Munchies, and Snacks" brings Slow-Cooked and Stuffed Baby Cherry Chili Peppers to the table (when you're done snacking on the chilies, you're left with a jar of terrific flavored oil, perfect for salads or pasta). There's Squashed Cherry Tomato and Smashed Olive Salad, and a Fragrant Thai Broth, infused with lemongrass, ginger, and lime leaves. Once you've mastered his basic risotto recipe you can turn out Shrimp and Peas Risotto with Basil and Mint, and likewise his basic bread recipe is the foundation for Chocolate Twister Bread. "Easy peasy" dessert ideas like Strawberries Marinated in Balsamic Vinegar or Malted Milk Balls and Ice Cream (bash a big bag of Whoppers into bits and sprinkle over quality vanilla ice cream) are a refreshing end to any meal. Now, be a "right little tiger" and get cooking--Seared Scallops and Crispy Prosciutto with Roasted Tomatoes and Smashed White Beans and other fabulous dishes await. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Editorial Review:

Award-winning author, Nina Simonds (A Spoonful of Ginger) has had an ear cocked to the healing properties of food since beginning her studies of Chinese cuisine in Taiwan. Give a culture a few thousand years to grow and flower and it will have a thing or two to say about what's good to eat, and what's good for you to eat, no question about it. Other cultures may not have it all quite as tabulated and codified as the Chinese (or Hindu culture with the laws of Ayurveda), but have settled over the eons on a way of life and cooking that works to the benefit, not the detriment, of the body. Mediterranean culture comes to mind. Measure all that against fast food and a culture (our own) that willfully strips time away from the daily need to eat--and not just eat alone, but as a family or group with time for each other--and you have the roots of a health crisis. So it's perfectly natural for an insightful food writer like Nina Simonds to produce a wonderful cookbook with the idea of health and healthy living at it's core. Spices of Life is the result.

The 160 recipes are divided into sections that include Something to Graze On, Appetizers that Make a Meal, Homey Soups, Hearty Stews and Braises, Main-dish Salads, Pleasures from the Garden, Versatile Stir-fries and Sautes, East-West Barbecue, Irresistible Vegetarian, Satisfying Staples: Noodles, Rice and Other Grains, Light and Sumptuous Sweets, and Foods that Fight Common Ailments. Simonds's deep experience with Asian cooking comes through in Technicolor Spicy Sichuan-style Green Beans. But so too does her own heritage, as in Great-Aunt Sophie's Chicken Soup.

The sidebars to each recipe give health information about various ingredients. For Spiced Almonds Simonds explains that the high fat content of almonds is monounsaturated, of a type to help reduce cholesterol, and that the high Vitamin E content can prevent heart disease. As for cinnamon and star anise, Asian physicians prescribe them as digestive aids. A brief profile of a health all star is included with each chapter, the focus on their expertise, and in some cases, their favorite recipes. In Appetizers, Dr. Andrew Weil discusses Vitamin and mineral supplements. In Homey Soups, Walter Willet takes on the food pyramid.

The real strength of Spices of Life, however, is found in the recipes and in Simonds's own experience as a very busy working mother--both in the kinds of food she puts on the table, and how she gets it there. She shares strategies for cooking as well as taking on the challenges of daily life. Her taste for life is equally well-matched by the flavor of the foods she highlights. Hot and Sour Slaw with Barbecued Pork anyone? Now, that's health food! --Schuyler Ingle

Best Cookbook in the House! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I originally bought this cookbook for my young teen daughter. She is required to cook one dinner each week, and I thought this would be simple and straightforward enough. Then I started using it, and it has become the only cookbook I ever seem to use these days. No exotic or expensive ingredients, easy directions for each recipe, and the food actually tastes good! My other cookbooks are all lined up on the bookshelf in the living room, but this one lives on top of the microwave in the kitchen...so, that's a good recommendation!
