The Rolls Royce of meals in minutes cookbooks 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I love cookbooks. I have an extensive collection. I taught myself how to cook using cookbooks so I believe a good cookbook is one that inspires and should be understandable and reasonably easy to use; with that in mind I love this cookbook.

A big reason I love this book is because it does not try to trick you into believing that a great meal will just magically appear in 30 minutes. This book educates you on how to organize your kitchen so you will be able to produce gourmet meals with minimal cooking time. This includes practical suggestions on how to stock your kitchen pantry, refrigerator and freezer. Detailed time-saving techniques on how to prepare herbs, spices and other ingredients ahead of time so that their flavor is preserved and you have minimal prep-time when cooking. There is also advice on equipment and a lot of time is spent on techniques; each individual technique or set of techniques are explained step-by-step and illustrated when necessary.

I find that knowing my skill level helps me to determine if a cookbook is written for me; so far my stages of development have been total disaster, occasional disaster or novice, beginner, experienced beginner, advanced beginner/almost intermediate, and now I consider myself an intermediate cook. I am not a gourmet or professional by any means. I would not recommend this cookbook for a novice or beginner but for an experienced beginner through intermediate cook who wants to expand his or her repertoire and wants suggestions on technique, food preparation and stocking up their kitchen. I imagine this would be too simple for someone who is really advanced. If you fit in the categories I described above then this is a great option.

For the reviewer who described dishes she prepared as bland I have not had that experience. Although I follow the recipes from cookbooks as closely as possible I have found that it is always important to taste a dish when I am cooking and making changes if needed.

Editorial Review:

We live in a hectic world where there isn't a lot of time to spend on meal preparation, but we still want to enjoy the food we eat. Gourmet Meals in Minutes will show you how to create a wide variety of mouth-watering, nutritious meals without spending all day in the kitchen.

For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.

It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.

If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.

Editorial Review:

With simple recipes that will impress every new husband, wife or in-law, newlywed couples now can actually use their new kitchen accessories instead of ordering take-out for every meal.

Includes such special features as:
-- A simple guide to common cookware

-- Suggestions for “special occasion” meals, including the one-year anniversary dinner and when in-laws come to visit

Great little book for the grilling man in your life. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my BF who loves to grill, but also loves to pack on the Calories. He loves to cook for me, but often I can only eat a bite or two because he likes to slather oil and butter. I thought the pictures of meant done "lighter" might inspire a more harmonious meal time. It definitely worked and he loves the book. He's tried 5 or 6 ideas and they all came out delicious. Plus, it's lighter so we're both happy.

Sensation Summer Cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.

Bought a new grill last weekend and received this cookbook from Amazon yesterday. LOVE it! Cooking Light Grilling is filled with delicious-sounding, healthy recipes for summertime meals. I can't wait to try some of the yummy ideas... like Portobello Burgers... maybe served with some grilled fruit on the side? There are 57 recipes in the book, and I'm sure I'll try nearly every one before Labor Day!

Editorial Review:

This new volume combines 20 years experience and 58 of the best grilling recipes from Cooking Light magazine, all tested multiple times to ensure that theyre easy to prepare, supremely healthy, and, of course, incredibly delicious. Where to put it, thats the question. In the kitchen, where youll use it daily, or on the coffee table with your other fine art objects? (Yes, its that good looking.)

50 Fast, Delicious, and Complete Dinners

Everyone knows that time equals money, and no one knows it more than those responsible for feeding a busy family. Sandi Richard is North America's foremost meal planner, and it's no wonder: She is passionate about getting families back to the dinner table. She should know; she raised seven children of her own.

She and her husband, Ron, put everything on the line 10 years ago to share Sandi's passion. They took all of their own experience feeding a family and combined it with a 5-year study of meals from other busy families. Then they self-published Sandi's first meal-planning book, Life's on Fire -- Cooking for the Rushed. Released in 1999, it was followed by two more books in the Cooking for the Rushed series.

The reaction was immediate, strong, and grateful. Here was a savvy, funny, organized, experienced voice to provide a simplified weekly meal plan. She provided grocery lists, prep times, and cooking times as well. With Sandi Richard by your side, you'll never find yourself in that dreaded spot: It's 5 p.m., and you have no idea what to feed your family for dinner.

The Family Dinner Fix is Sandi's latest contribution to the happiness and health of families everywhere. The book boasts 10 weeks of balanced recipes and meal plans that include grocery and equipment lists. In addition, color-coded recipes help you match each meal to your life each night -- from hectic weeknights to days when there is extra time to devote to cooking and eating. Each meal has its own photograph (a helpful preparation tool) and nutritional information, from the amount of fiber to diabetic food exchanges.

Bring Sandi Richard into your kitchen so you can spend less time in it, turning the stress of making dinner into a deeply delicious event each day for you and your family.

Delicious recipes, but not very healthy 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've used a number of recipes from this cookbook and have been mostly pleased. There are some nice deviations from the typical ingredients, including a few vegetables and grains I hadn't used before. The green bean and red pepper dish has become a staple in my home, and some of the other recipes inspired me to try different casserole dishes. Overall, I think it's a nice addition to my little cookbook collection.

However, most of the recipes in this book are very high in calories and fat. The author uses a LOT of butter and cheese--practically every recipe calls for a tablespoon or more of butter and mounds of cheese. Yes, you can cut back on these high fat additions and substitute oil in some places, but overall I would not call these recipes particularly healthy. I use most of the recipes only occasionally because of this.

a lot a great recipes 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for someone who is not necessarily a strict vegetarian, but would like to try eating more vegetables.

Before I started on a diabetic diet I had a few of Mr. Food's other recipe books. I was so excited to find out he, Art Ginsburg, had written a recipe book for those with diabetes. My diabetic diet had become so boring and plain until I received this book from Amazon.com. Now I look forward to planning my next meal.

Excellent variety. 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I rated this one five stars based on what I look for in diabetic/low-carb cookbooks (1) has to have complete nutritional information (I don't like just "exchanges" or just a carbohydrate range or just sugarfree...); (2) recipes I will make (a favorite is the Guiltless Brownies with cocoa and bananas) that my family won't bypass or that require too many shopping trips to specialty stores; and (3) variety (I don't need another book telling me a crustless pie with sugarfree pudding or tying to just substitute a sweetener for sugar) -- this one has a variety of menus, lots of different dishes, real food ingredients and a wide range of carbohydrate counts instead of assuming all diabetics are using certain ranges or exchanges or avoiding the same foods. Realistic menus.

How sweet it isn't. 3 out of 5 stars.

This book was full of helpful recipes for my aunt who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She has always been a huge fan of pasta and chicken so this book helped her out showing her how she can have the food she wants. Having diabetes strips your freedom to eat what you want and cook books like this give diabetics a choice of recipes rather than a bag of rabbit food.

The Scavengers Guide to Haute Cuisine 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Steven Rinella, big game hunter of sparrows and squirrels, doesn't know the first thing about the value of wildlife to human well being. Wild birds eat insects, including mosquitoes. Squirrels bury acorns and thus spread oak trees across the landscape, providing food for more wildlife. During the reign of Chairman Mao, the Chinese tried to eradicate small birds, believing they were pests. Instead, they discovered that they were critically important predators of crop pests. If we continue to disregard the value of wildlife, as Rinella does out of ignorance, we do so at our peril.
He is the real backyard pest and should be ignored, both for his advocacy of destroying wildlife and his claims to haute cuisine.

Editorial Review:

A hybrid of memoir, cookbook, and travelogue, and a love song to hunting and fishing and the American wild, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is about one man's quest to live off the land and recreate the recipes from Escoffier's Le Guide Culinaire, the 1903 magnum opus.Nature writer Steven Rinella embarks on a yearlong journey across America, trying to locate the bizarre, often esoteric ingredient of Le Guide Culinaire. His adventures take him fishing for stingrays on a Florida beach; skinning eels with an upstate New Yorker who keeps an emu as company; and hunting mountain goats on the snow-covered cliffs of Alaska's Chugach Range.Praised by reviewers for its lyrical prose and humor, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is a narrative that opens up a deeper understanding of the things we eat and our place in the natural world.

Each delicious recipie has a picture and is made with a short list of normal inexpensive ingredients that you can actually find. There's a really good variety here, and there's only one in the whole book that I don't want to try. This book has inspired my family to have "soup night" at least one night each week. The section on soups to store is a great alternative to keeping over-salted canned soup in the pantry, providing a healthy quick meal for kids.
