Quick, creative, delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is BY FAR the most clever cookbook I've ever used. I've had it for a while and just recently decided to use it as it is intended. I followed the shopping list and have been making the recipes for the week. My thoughts:

1. recipes are varied, interesting and delicious
2. recipes are easy to prepare, and quick to make
3. the shopping list takes all the planning out of weekly cooking.
4. because you only have to go shopping once, it is fun to see what the next meal will turn out to be.

Seriously, my husband is not a vegan and he has been eagerly asking me each day, so what's for dinner tonight! Because you know you have all the ingredients and they are so simple to make I almost feel like I am eating out each night trying something new. There really is a lot of variety and taste. These recipes were carefully tested because each and everyone so far has gone off without a hitch (and leftovers!)

Editorial Review:

Best-selling cookbook author, Leah Leneman, offers easy-to-make, delightful meals with healthful, all-natural ingredients.

Editorial Review:

More than 40 million people in the U.S. own toaster ovens.

Toaster ovens are very versatile and convenient. With their ability to toast, bake, broil, top brown and keep food warm, they do the job of a toaster and a full size oven in one countertop unit. Ideal in any home, these ovens save space and energy.

Most toaster ovens are used only for making open-faced sandwiches or simple broiling. However, there is an endless variety of recipes and meals you can make in a toaster oven. The 125 Best Toaster Oven Recipes provides dozens of tantalizing recipes for such tempting dishes as:

  • Shrimps with Pesto and Prosciutto for entertaining
  • Chicken Breast with Pesto and Mozzarella for a perfect weekday meal
  • Oven Beef Stew, a comfort food favorite
  • Stuffed Pork Loin Roast with Cran-Apple Sauce
  • Baked Spaghetti Pie, a favorite one-dish meal
  • Red Pepper Quiche for a satisfying lunch or brunch
  • Nachos, perfect for your next party

125 Best Toaster Oven Recipes also provides practical tips and techniques, menu suggestions and valuable information on the wide variety of styles and sizes of toaster ovens available today.

My favorite cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

My husband bought this cookbook for me, and of all the cookbooks that we tried, this turned out to be my favorite cookbook that I use the often. Reasons are many -- many dishes look fancy but are often easy to do and taste very fabulous, and they usually don't require hard-to-find ingredients. Another plus is that you don't use a lot of pans and stuff -- you just use the same skillet for everything (though you'll need to transfer some foods to a waiting dish for some recipes).

Also, though the cookbook isn't considered low-carb, many recipes are suitable for people who can't eat high carb and friendly to people who follow whole food/paleo diets like we do. Also, thankfully, the cookbook authors don't seem to have hangups about using good fats, such as butter and olive oil.

Our favorite recipes are: steak with sherried mushrooms and fennel pork chops with charred lemons. Also fabulous is the lamb with mint-garlic-caper sauce.

Editorial Review:

The most useful piece of cookware in any household is a good heavy skillet. Bon Appetit's Brooke Dojny and Melanie Barnard share their extensive culinary experience with this indispensable kitchen helpmate to create a collection of entrees so delicious it's hard to believe they only need one pan and 30 minutes or less to get them to the table. Serving up a meal of Garlic Shrimp Marbella can be just that easy. Same goes for Corned Beef Hash the old-fashioned way. From down-home favorites like Beer-Battered Fish 'n' Chips to more exotic fare like Curried Couscous with Chickpeas and Dried Fruits, now dinner can be ready in, well - a flash in the pan!

An average guy 2 out of 5 stars.

While there is some useful nutritional information in this book, I think that the book is misleading in several ways and I don't think it was worth the purchase.

It's misleading to title it "every calorie counts" and then tell the reader she in not counting the calories from sugar alcohols used to replace the sugar in many recipes. She claims there is no reliable way to count those calories yet those calories are routinely listed on food labels and the product labels of the sugar alcohol manufacturers.

It's also misleading to say there are 500 recipes in the book when many are but small moderations of one master recipe. Do readers really need 6 variations of the cauliflower "mashed potatoes" recipe or 11 variations of the cauliflower rice recipe? It also annoys me that she only included a few baked goods recipes when her previous books had more of them.

Further, the book claims that these are recipes "the whole family will love"; yet many of the recipes are not just not mainstream. Do kids really love roasted turnips or cumin mushrooms (or the 6 variations on it)?

If you are a low carber or if you have a family to feed and are looking for ways to replace mainstream recipes with healthier alternatives, I think there are better and more creative mainstream books out there, even some of Dana's previous books. I just wanted to post this review because I want others to be aware of what I consider to be shortcomings in this book. I have returned my copy.

Editorial Review:

Dieters everywhere are realizing that weight loss is a simple equation: You have to burn more calories than you take in. Pretty simple, right? You just eat fewer calories. The problem is, most low-calorie cookbooks cut calories by cutting fat, which also means they cut nutrients and flavor! They also fill you up with unhealthy carbohydrates like sugar and white flour. No more! Dana Carpender comes to the rescue with 500 delicious and healthy low-calorie recipes that include healthy fats like olive oil and nuts and healthy carbs like brown rice and whole-wheat bread. It's the best of both worlds, and the healthiest diet imaginable, because every calorie counts in terms of nutrition. There are no empty calories from fillers with no nutritional value. These recipes are delicious and healthy and will help you lose weight for good.

Great gift book 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Friends keep asking me what to get for someone who has just started cooking or turned vegan. Hands down, this is the one and only book I recommend. I bought it four years ago and still use it weekly. It has fool-proof cornbread, hummus, split pea soup, tacos, masoor dal, Thai noodle salad, oatmeal cookies---all the vegan stand-bys. For breakfasts, the scrambled tofu is good, though I had bad luck with the french toast and sourdough pancakes. I really appreciate the nutritional information provided for each dish. The pantry-stocking pages are excellent, as is the overview of nutrition and veganism. For beginners, the book's chief asset is its brevity: my first vegan cookbook was too big, and it took me way too long to sift through it and plan the week's meals. This has everything you need for months of great cooking, without much fuss. And its wide pages lay relatively flat, which makes it easier to use in the kitchen. A must for the new vegan or cook in your life.

Editorial Review:

Over 130 pages of tasty recipes designed for optimum health, plus sections on protein myths and facts, calcium, cutting the fat, equipping your kitchen, and more. A great book for novice or veteran cook.

The Best I've Found, so far! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I don't have enough space in this forum to express my total appreciation for this book. I've had it for over a year and I've barely used a fraction of it's valuable ideas. The ones I have used, I've used over and over again! I'm sitting here right now thinking of making some bread. I can either grind the grain by hand or use the recomended grinder I discovered from the book! I'm pretty much all set! A Must Read!
