Easy to Use 5 out of 5 stars.

This was an impulse buy that I haven't regretted. It is perfect for the beginning cook or the harried college student. My only complaint is that it doesn't lay flat but that is obvious when you buy it.

Cheaper than the food court (hopefully) 5 out of 5 stars.

This is designed for a beginning cook and so, quite sensibly begins with some basic advice on stocking a kitchen with equipment and staples. Cooking terms are explained and safety information is also given.

The recipes are clearly written (prep time is not given but it would be difficult for the authors to estimate how long it would take a beginning cook) and cover a nice range of difficulty and interests. I particularly liked that vegetarian recipes were included and that all recipes had nutrition information listed, both necessities for a (sometime) vegetarian who is usually on a diet.

I bought this for my college student daughter in hopes of inspiring her to cook for herself, at least part of the time, instead of eating out. For others who are thinking about this as a gift for a student I would suggest adding some of the basic equipment or staples needed.

Editorial Review:

In less time and for less money than it takes to order pizza, you can make it yourself! Three harried but heatlh-conscious college students compiled and tested this collection of more than 200 tasty, hearty, inexpensive recipes anyone can cook— yes, anyone! Whether you're short on cash, fearful of fat, counting your calories, or just miss home cooking, The Healthy College Cookbook offers everything you need to make good food yourself.

outstanding cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

Madhur Jaffrey, a highly regarded writer on Indian food, does not disappoint in this book. She's a beautiful writer and presents Indian cuisine in an approachable, informative form. She thoughtfully includes menu suggestions, which is most appreciated!

Easy and Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.

We love Indian food, but with two young children, rarely find the time necessary to prepare it. This book is fantastic! We've owned it for a month and have already made a dozen or more recipes. All have been delicious, and all have been, true to its title, quick and easy to prepare. Highly recommended. Because the recipes are easy to make, it would be a good introduction for those new to the cuisine. For my taste, the amount of salt called for in the recipes is too high, but in all other regards, it is our favorite cookbook (at the moment).

Editorial Review:

Ever get a midnight hankering for onion fritters, or for a plate of lamb stewed in coconut milk? The recipes for these Indian delicacies are widely considered to be on the forbidding side. Yet Madhur Jaffrey, an international authority on Indian food and the host of several tandoori-driven TV shows, makes it all seem relatively easy. The kicker: more than 70 of the dishes can be prepared in a half-hour or less.

Great tips for making meal time fun!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

All the recipes look really easy and fun to make. I love the photos and lay out which makes it so easy & enjoyable to use.

Jennifer does a great job of advising parents on how to engage kids during meal time and I love the stories she shares with the recipes. I have an 8 & 6 year old, I am sure they will love some of the recipes eventhough they are no longer a toddler.

Editorial Review:

Every toddler goes through the stage where they want nothing but "O"-shaped cereal. The challenge for parents is getting kids to ask for fruit salad instead of cupcakes. Faced with this seemingly impossible task with her own child, Jennifer Carden has created The Toddler Caf , a guide to making mealtime with children fun and interactive. It offers simple, creative ways for kids to identify with their food, like saying tuna salad is what mermaids eat, or making Minty Pea Pops in ice cube trays. Carden has created over 50 unique recipes that encourage families (including toddlers) to work together to prepare, eat, clean up, and best of all, look forward to a healthy, delicious meal.

The Six O'Clock Scramble cookbook is a companion to Aviva's wonderful email-based newsletter service that provides busy moms with easy and nutritious meals for their families.

The Scramble is a weekly e-mail newsletter that features:
Five flavorful and healthy, tried-and-true dinner recipes with side dish suggestions, emailed to you each week.

Easy-to-prepare dinners in 30 minutes (or less), most with fewer than 10 ingredients.

Delicious, easy recipes like Asian Turkey Burgers, Tortellini Tossed with Fresh Mozzarella, honey glazed salmon and red beans and rice burritos.

Includes an organized grocery list so you can print and shop.

Perfect for working or full-time parents, or anyone who wants to make easy, delicious home-cooked meals.

From O, The Oprah magazine:

Aviva Goldfarb had one of those ideas - incredibly obvious, yet nobody had thought of it - that immediately make the pieces of your brain fit together with a neat click. A wife, mother, self-published cookbook author, and organizational ace, Goldfarb realized that for most people 6 P.M. was too late to start wondering what to cook for dinner. So she started the Six O’Clock Scramble (thescramble.com), a weekly e-mail newsletter with five days’ worth of dinner recipes, plus grocery lists. The meals (grilled teriyaki chicken tenderloins one night, baked huevos rancheros another) take about a half hour to prepare and are creative, healthy, unprocessed and kid-friendly without being adult-alienating. A subscription costs $5 a month - a small price to pay for a whole new kind of happy meal. Goldfarb herself is happy, having graduated from the self-publishing business: Next fall St. Martin’s Press will release The Six O’Clock Scramble Cookbook.

Editorial Review:

In its many publications and on TV, Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen offers exhaustively tested "best" recipes, tips, and product evaluations. Among its cookbooks, The Best Make-Ahead Recipe offers over 300 formulas that can be prepared in advance, held, and finished later. The recipes range widely from pre-prepared oven-ready dishes like Baked Fish Provençal; "double-duty" recipes, such as Mexican-Style Pork and Chorizo Stew, that use leftovers imaginatively; slow-cooker items like Tuscan white bean soup; and desserts, such as a chocolate soufflé that can go from freezer to oven successfully. In addition, the fully illustrated book offers helpful charts like How to Reheat, which provides advice according to portion size and heating method; special-occasion menus that can be started up to a month ahead; and discerning product and equipment advice.

As with other Cook's Illustrated projects, Make-Ahead includes recipes that have appeared previously in its other works, though a majority of these have been amended with make-ahead or scaling-up data. Almost all the recipes are prefaced with their trademark testing "diaries," exhaustively detailed accounts of the recipe-making process ("With the onion shells figured out, we focused next on the filling...," gives the flavor), which some readers will find enlightening, but others will think excessive. Of course, certain recipes, or recipe classes, like that for desserts, are necessarily made wholly or partially in advance--but the book's point is to provide formulas designed to yield superior results even when the uncompleted dishes are held, as most can be, in the refrigerator or freezer. Mission accomplished. Readers will find the book a consistently reliable resource for superior make-ahead dishes for everyday and special-occasion cooking. --Arthur Boehm

Quick, easy meals! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I really like her recipes -- quick and easy, yet very tasty. So far I have only made a few meals from her book, but I look forward to trying more. I think this kind of cookbook reaches out to most everyone ... it would make a perfect "first" cookbook, or for those with busy, hectic lives, or for those like me, who enjoys good food but simply doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

GREAT, SIMPLE & QUICK MEALS 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am a working mom so anything that makes life easier and quick in the kitchen is great. I got this book for Christmas which I had on my wish list and it is Awesome. It has great ideas for simple quick meals. What I also like about the recipes is that you can change them a little by adding or subtracting some of the ingredients and make them your own. I use a lot of prepackage meals and it is great when you can add that special something that makes it taste and feel like homemade. Sandra Lee has great ideas to help out the working mom; I love to watch her show when I have the time. I think this book is great for all who have very little time on their hands.

Easy and delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book online on a whim. So far, I have made 4 things and they all have been super easy and very tasty. I like these meals because they are very hearty - unlike some vegetarian meals. The author also uses a lot of "one-pot" meals where you just make one dish and it is filling enough to be the whole meal (I prefer this to having to prepare a main dish and a side dish and a salad, etc.) I thought the ingredients were easy to find and the health information seems well-researched. I have found that the preparation times in the book (generally 10-20 minutes) are very accurate. The dishes also seem very kid-friendly both in cooking and taste. I have already thought about sharing this cookbook with my mom!

Turned into a perfect gift for my daughter-in-law who works full time, and is DEFINATELY a vegetarian. She loves to cook, but often finds the
recipes limited in her lifestyle. Thanks for calling this book to my attention. ~MLM~

Great recipes and great intro to cooking, thai style 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm asian, but being born in America, I know more about cooking mac and cheese and fried chicken then asian cooking. Therefore, this book was a great help to me. The pad thai dish was not too good, but the chiangmai curry noodle dish, fried rice dish, and basil with chicken dish was wonderful! From this book, I've learned that with garlic, onions, herbs, spices, soy sauce, fish sauce, water, or sugar, I can create something tasty for myself to eat.

Great recipes for everyone! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

After my stint in one of the big, meal-delivery weight-loss programs, I started to round the bend toward my goal weight. It soon came time for me to manage my weight on my own, with healthy, self-prepared meals. This cookbook made it a no-brainer.

Every recipe has a listing of its nutritional information along with the percentage of vitamins in each meal. Truth be told, I'm not terribly into cooking, but the pictures are fantastic and go a long way to motivating me to cook a meal. The fact that most of these recipes are so easy to make is also a huge plus.

I did find one problem, in that some of the ingredients can be a bit difficult to find. Though, I've been quite successful at substituting similar items whenever I couldn't find what was needed at a local market.

While I could take or leave Sandra Lee's television show, I am very glad to have bought this book. I've made 17 of the recipes, thus far. Not only have I enjoyed them, but my husband and VERY picky 2 year old have loved every single one of these healthy meals, as well.
