Simple and Raw 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great place to start for anyone making the transition to raw food. I recommend it to my neophyte raw food friends. It's not overwhelming and most recipes don't have long prep times.

Not always 5 minutes but always Tastey! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased three raw cookbooks, this is the first I have tried.

I have tried all but two recipes of the first three days menu plan, plus two extras, sometimes they took a little longer than 5 minutes but I have enjoyed every recipes.

This is my fourth try going raw and I may make it this time because the foods in the book are readily available (except maybe one or two).

There is not a lot planning days ahead to soak, sprout, grind, dehydrate for three days so maybe it will be ready and hopefully you will still want it and remember what you were trying to make in the first place! With this book you see it, you check the frig and find the ingrediants, you make it, you love it!

Editorial Review:

Here is a great resource for anyone looking for easy alternatives to complex raw recipes that require lots of time and expensive equipment to prepare. Acclaimed raw chef Angela Elliott shows how to whip up mouth-watering lasagne, spaghetti marinara, stuffed mushrooms, broccoli in cheese sauce, apple pie, decadent whipped cream and strawberries, chocolate shake, and more--all in about five minutes, with easy-to-find ingredients and just a blender or food processor. She shares her personal wellness journey and her playful enthusiasm to make the book an enjoyable and inspiring guide to delicious living.

Editorial Review:

If you don't get home until six or later and still need to get dinner on the table, this is the book for you. The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet pares down ingredients to their simplest and most flavorful form. "Keeping things simple takes the frantic quality--and pressure--out of preparing a meal," says author Nava Atlas. "Simplifying helps you to slow down and enjoy the process of cooking."

Atlas devotes a whole chapter to tofu and soy products, including seitan and packaged products like soy "hot dogs" and "sausage." She also has a chapter on "Rudimentary Wraps," which includes recipes for Avocado and Ricotta Soft Tacos, Goat Cheese and Red Pepper Wraps, and the ever popular Black Bean Burrito (spice them with green chiles). Pasta is a quick and easy favorite. Keep jarred sauce on hand and you have the beginnings of Pasta with Triple Red Sauce or Pasta with Olive Sauce. Serve veggie burgers on whole-grain buns with a side of Creamy Coleslaw or Baked Barbecued Tofu and Potato Kebabs for an easy weeknight meal. Or try Asian Sesame-Soy Noodles paired with Broccoli and Tofu in Peanut Sauce.

Every recipe includes a nutritional breakdown including calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. Nearly every recipe has suggestions for what to pair the dish with and on what page to find it. This is an especially handy cookbook for time-crunched families. The food is easy, quick, healthy, and doesn't require great concentration to prepare. --Dana Van Nest

a favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said, other than this (in its original form and new incarnation, which had to be bought for the new recipes and because, well, the old one is falling apart) has been my favorite cookbook since the summer of 1999, and I am a picky cook. I frequently purchase copies for my veggie friends and new cooks alike.

was sorry to see that we still need mahines 3 out of 5 stars.

I am sorry to see that many of the recipies require machines.. I can deal with a blender and a food processor...but a dehydrator? come on..I thought this book was about NOT shelling out money for machines.

did not find this helpful 1 out of 5 stars.

I own a good selection of veg books. For me this was not worth the purchase or reading time. I did read it cover to cover (thinking it will get better) but I just was very disappointed.

good inspiration 4 out of 5 stars.

I have found this little book to be very helpful. Yes, some of her ideas are simplicity itself. But, frankly, after 1 1/2 years of eating >90% raw, I needed some new, uncomplicated ideas. All of the gourmet stuff offered by others is wonderful but with 3 small kids, I simply don't have time or inclination to pursue that level of raw cuisine. However, I do get tired of smoothies and salads! So, this book really helped kickstart my raw menus. I like it.
It is a legitimate criticism that the subtitle indicates no machines while many of the recipes call for a food processor or a dehydrator. But, other than that, I have no complaints.

Editorial Review:

Enjoy and prepare simple raw foods, the healthiest foods nature has to offer, while living a busy lifestyle. This book is perfect for raw food beginners, busy people, health-conscious slackers, and those on temporary cleansing programs. It makes a great gift for the raw-curious as well, since it is the simplest and least intimidating raw food recipe book on the market. It includes over 120 recipes, almost half of which are or include machine-free options.

great book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

this is a great book. my daughter is 2 and she has enjoyed the recipes that i've tried so far. there aren't any pictures though, so if your a visual person this may not be for you. but overall the book was great.

OK but a bit simple 4 out of 5 stars.

My husband bought this book as a gift for my sons 2nd b'day. The recipes are about 50% vegan, 90% veganizable, and of course 100% vegetarian. I think it would be good for someone who isn't a great cook or who has a picky kid. If you're a good cook with an adventurous toddler like me then you're not going to get much out of it.

Great find 5 out of 5 stars.

I am happy I found this book. My 1-year old son is vegetarian by choice, he spits all the meat out. This book is meant for 2+ kids but I use it already and I found a lot of recipes that appeal to adults as well. I like the that the recipes are marked either vegetarian or vegan.

Editorial Review:

This new revised edition of the trusted guide to vegetarian family cooking is better than ever with recipes for quick, healthy, tasty, kid-tested meals—many of them totally new for this edition. The vegan information has been expanded, too, with plenty of helpful tips on incorporating vegan choices into a diet. This is one recipe book that belongs in every earth-friendly kitchen.

Not as good as the first one 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I love G. Garvin, I thought his first book was fantabulous. It had wonderful delicious recipes in it that had my sister and I drooling after we tried them. But this one, there were only a few recipes that we wanted to try so we made a copy of the ones we wanted, and took back because. He also had recipes that were going to be difficult to make because some of the ingredients we never heard of and couldn't find in the food stores.

Simple Ain't Always Pantry Friendly 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Beginning cooks and on-the-go moms this cookbook is for you. There are nearly 200 recipes that are straightforward and quick to prepare. The G-Notes and G-Gotta-Be-Quick Tips at the bottom of every other page provide helpful tips and timely tricks to preparing these tasty meals. The glossary and top ten cooking tips are extremely beneficial for those wanting to hone their culinary skills. G. Garvin offers sensible twists on everyday dishes like: grilled chicken with prosciutto, asparagus pasta primavera, and crispy oven-baked fish. However, there are some ingredients not found in every pantry or fridge: swordfish, Roquefort cheese, and fruit compote to name a few.

G. Garvin gives his nod to the everyday cook. This book has more instruction and more pictures of food then the first. The commentary provided before each chapter reminds you of an old-fashioned soul food Sunday dinner time conversation. So get ready to add a few twists to your average monthly menu. Hook up wit ya boy, G. Garvin.

not happy 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I are big W-S fans and have enjoyed our collection of their original series of cookbooks immensely. This new "food made fast" cookbook, however, has left us very disappointed. The flavor and instructions fall far short of their usual standards. I suggest sticking with their earlier versions.

Perfect for All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has excellent recipes and is particularly good if you own the All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker because the lining comes out and is a piece of heavy-duty nonstick cookware. You brown the meat and onions in the liner on top of the stove, add the liquid and spices, transfer the liner to the slow cooker and walk away. Most of the recipes require this type of preparation. The book is organized by prep time and times are given for cooking on high and low. If you appreciate good flavor, fresh ingredients and don't mind investing in some prep time, this book is for you. Be sure to try the Spring Veal Stew with asparagus, peas, mushrooms and creme fraiche - outstanding.

Editorial Review:

With The Way to Cook, Julia Child creates a second culinary classic. Her first, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, introduced a generation of those used to preparing simple fare to what was then considered gourmet food, demystified classic techniques, and raised our culinary consciousness. In The Way to Cook, she also demystifies cooking techniques and does some consciousness-raising. This time, though, she speaks to everyone with little or no experience in the kitchen, which is most people these days. Always in tune with the moment, and ever the gracious realist, Child (although calling her Julia seems reasonable since she treats us with such open informality) explains in The Way to Cook how to boil an egg and stuff it, as well as how to make a perfect omelet and an elegant soufflé.

To help out readers who lack the most basic knowledge, she organizes the book by techniques rather than by ingredients. Soups are first, a relatively unintimidating choice to build confidence through delicious results such as true French Onion Soup and a contemporary Black Bean Gazpacho. Next come breads, updated to use a food processor to cut the kneading time. The fish chapter covers broiling a salmon steak and creating a sophisticated Crown Mousse of Trout. Chapters on poultry, meats, vegetables, and desserts are equally ample and wide-ranging.

When The Way to Cook was published in 1989, it accompanied a television series. A related set of videotapes, the first to teach cooking comprehensively, was offered simultaneously. However, more than 600 color photos in this book make it fully complete on its own.

The Way to Cook is a good reference volume, a useful gift, and a handsome way to follow Julia's career as she transformed from a French classicist to the ever-evolving, always clear and reliable teacher we have come to adore. --Dana Jacobi

Editorial Review:

In this irresistible collection Rachael continues to work her 30-minute magic with nearly 100 awesomely delicious brand-new recipes. From pasta to pizzas, soups to sammies, and chicken, fish, and meat, you’ll find a 30-minute-meal to suit every appetite.

But what if you don’t have even 30 minutes? No worries, Rachael has you covered with her quickest-ever 15-minute meals. Why order pizza when you can have Provencal Tuna Melts, Italian Surf ‘n Turf Salad- even a fabulous paella- on the table in just 15 minutes? You’ll never reach for the take-out menus again when super speedy Pea and Parsley Soup with Canadian Bacon and Skillet Tamale Pie are the delicious alternatives.

And what about those days when you want to slow things down a bit? Rachael’s got the perfect recipes for those times, too. Her 60-minute meals like Paprika Chicken Stew with Potato Pierogies, Chicken, Corn and Tomatillo Lasagna, and Swordfish Rolls with Spaghetti Squash don’t require any more effort from the cook, but they tale advantage of a little extra time in the oven or simmering on the stove to develop those great, deep flavors we all crave on lazy days. Among these dishes are some of Rachael’s “Double Duty Dinners,” recipes that you cook once, serve twice, but look and taste so different that no one will be the wiser (such as Chicken in Creamy Mushroom Sauce with Chive Egg Noodles in which the base magically morphs into Tarragon-Tomato Chicken and Bread Soup another night).

You’ll also fine fun Rachael Ray signature meals like:

BLD (meals you can eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner)
MYOTO (Make Your Own Take-Out Meals) that feature ethnic flavors but no mystery or fats
Date Night Dinners and Fancy Fake-Outs that are every bit as elegant as the fare from your favorite little bistro
The Kids Will Eat It meals (besides chicken nuggets) that will bring even the pickiest eaters to the table

This is Rachael’s most versatile book yet, the one that will help you get the very most out of every minute you spend in the kitchen- whether you’re rushing to the beat of the clock or taking advantage of a little extra time to stop and smell the veggies roasting. Either way you’ll be dishing up some of Rachael’s most appealing recipes ever- and all on your own schedule.
