not happy 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I are big W-S fans and have enjoyed our collection of their original series of cookbooks immensely. This new "food made fast" cookbook, however, has left us very disappointed. The flavor and instructions fall far short of their usual standards. I suggest sticking with their earlier versions.

Perfect for All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has excellent recipes and is particularly good if you own the All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker because the lining comes out and is a piece of heavy-duty nonstick cookware. You brown the meat and onions in the liner on top of the stove, add the liquid and spices, transfer the liner to the slow cooker and walk away. Most of the recipes require this type of preparation. The book is organized by prep time and times are given for cooking on high and low. If you appreciate good flavor, fresh ingredients and don't mind investing in some prep time, this book is for you. Be sure to try the Spring Veal Stew with asparagus, peas, mushrooms and creme fraiche - outstanding.

Editorial Review:

Heeding the pleas of modern multitasking home cooks, Television Food Network’s Sara Moulton returns with 200 delicious and quick main dishes, sides, and desserts for busy workweek dinners.

As the host of Cooking Live and Sara’s Secrets, the food editor of Good Morning America, and the bestselling author of Sara Moulton Cooks at Home, Sara Moulton is one of this country’s most popular and accessible celebrity chefs. It was while touring the U.S. promoting her first book, in fact, that Sara's fans begged her for fast, tasty, and wholesome weeknight entrees. She realized that she, too, had a need for those kinds of dishes, which was all her busy schedule would allow. In writing this book, Sara rethought dinner itself, so that mealtimes no longer featured the same predictable recipes. Instead she offers “breakfast for dinner” or hearty soups or sandwiches. The result is a cookbook filled with easy and popular ethnic dishes to spice up the repertoire, her own versions of American classics, dishes to whip up from pantry staples as well as supermarket salad bar and deli items, and slow-cooking recipes for leisurely weekends.

With recipes that will satisfy taste buds as well as time constraints, Sara’s Secrets for Weeknight Meals covers the spectrum from entree salads (Thai-style Steak Salad with Spicy Mint Dressing), substantial sandwiches (Scampi Heroes), hearty soups for supper (Creamy Cauliflower Soup with Chorizo and Greens), breakfast foods for dinner (Potato Pancakes with Smoked Salmon and Fried Eggs), pasta (Quick Asparagus Lasagna), seafood (Steamed Mussels in Curried Coconut Broth), vegetable plates (Exotic Mushroom Pot Pie), meat dishes (Meatloaf Burgers), double-duty dishes (leftover rice in Cheatin' Jambalaya), weekend dishes to cook ahead (Slow-cooked Chinese Spareribs), recipes that either can be put together in no time with prepared supermarket ingredients (Crispy Polenta Slices with Gorgonzola and Leeks) or from a well-stocked pantry (Linguine with White Bean, Sun-dried Tomato, and Olive Sauce), to delectable desserts (Chocolate Bread Pudding, Gingerbread Pancakes with Butterscotch Apples, Nectarine and Plum Upside-down Cake).

Recipes include hands-on cooking time and total cooking time as well as suggestions for side-dish pairings. Twenty-four beautiful color photos, warm and friendly headnotes, and lots of Sara's tips and shortcuts (including advice on stocking a pantry, basic recipes, simple sides, quick sauces, and mail-order sources) make this another cookbook for Sara’s fans to cherish.

Editorial Review:

If you’re like Rachael Ray, mealtime is a time to hang out and reconnect with family and friends. That means you could be making a late dinner for you and your sweetie one night and making brunch for your entire family the next day. No matter how many people join the party, Rachael firmly believes that cooking should be fun, easy–and done in 30 minutes or less.

Transforming recipes for four into recipes for two or eight can be a tricky guessing game. If you use twice the amount of chicken will you have to cook it twice as long? Is it possible to make a satisfying pot of soup for two without having to eat leftovers for a week? What’s the best–and most economical–way to feed a crowd of eight? With Rachael Ray: 2, 4, 6, 8 there’s no need to guess, because Rachael has designed right-sized menus for every occasion, with perfect meals for two, four, six, or eight.

For date night you don’t want tons of food, so Rachael’s Croque Madame sandwich with a Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette salad and a killer vodka cocktail strike just the right note. For family dinners, double dates, or those who love leftovers, Rachael whips up classic meals for four like Wingless Buffalo Chicken Pizza or Grilled Shrimp with Chorizo Skewers. For poker night with your buddies, Rachael knows exactly which ingredients stretch into a 30-minute meal for six, like Uptown Sweet and Spicy Sausage Hoagies. Throwing a dinner party is a pleasure when you’re armed with stress-free meals for eight like Italian Chicken Pot Pie and Boozy Berries and Biscuits. With complete menus for family dinners as well as easy and impressive meals for entertaining plus lots of super simple desserts that taste like a million, no matter what the occasion, the perfect meal for your crowd is never more 30 minutes away.

a favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said, other than this (in its original form and new incarnation, which had to be bought for the new recipes and because, well, the old one is falling apart) has been my favorite cookbook since the summer of 1999, and I am a picky cook. I frequently purchase copies for my veggie friends and new cooks alike.

Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I was a little disappointed with this cookbook. I think most of the recipes are pretty generic as they call for all of the 'normal' ingredients of the recipes, but just add "gluten-free" to the title of the ingredient. It wouldn't take a genius to take already used recipes and convert them to GF just by substituting the ing. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but this wasn't it....

Great Starter Cookbook for Celiacs 4 out of 5 stars.

Everything is written for kids, so it's easy to follow and the recipes are super easy and quick. It covers everything from drinks, desserts, to all the staples like dinner, appetizers, and such.

Editorial Review:

Flavorful, quick, and healthy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book starts out with a brief section of instructions in case you aren't wholly experienced with home cooking. This includes planning ahead tips, grocery shopping tips, kitchen equipment you should have, how to approach your cooking, and even food safety concerns. Since there are plenty of inexperienced cooks who might be tempted to pick up a book of quick, healthy meals, this is a handy set of things to include.

Recipe chapters include dinner salads; soups & stews; vegetarian fare; chicken, duck & turkey; fish & seafood; beef, pork & lamb; sauces; sides; and yes, even desserts. There are also some notes on substitutions & equivalencies. There are multiple indexes: a comprehensive index as well as one of recipes that take only 20-30 minutes (most in this book take 45 or less) and one of family-friendly recipes.

I always have a hard time faulting EatingWell's other cookbooks for producing what I consider to be bland recipes, since there's a sizable audience for that kind of fare. However, I was incredibly relieved to find myself wholly enjoying the very flavorful recipes that we made from Healthy in a Hurry. There's a vegetarian chili that is surprisingly delicious, with a simple yet effective spice mix that adds a lot. Recipes range from the elegant (grilled lobster tails with nectarine-avocado salad) to the homey (chicken & white bean soup). These recipes make use of some wonderful international flavors to spice things up in recipes such as roast chicken dal and tandoori chicken with tomato-cucumber raita. The authors seem to have found a better balance between keeping the recipes simple (without using tons of ingredients most cooks might not have) while still interjecting flavor.

Many recipes include mouth-watering photos, and the recipe layout is clean, plain, and easy to make sense of.

Editorial Review:

Never again sacrifice delicious, healthy meals when time is short: Here are more than 150 recipes that can be cooked in 30 to 40 minutes or less.

Healthy in a Hurry offers the ultimate answer to the perennial weeknight question of "What's for dinner?" With hundreds of quick and flavorful main-course recipes, it promises to become an everyday cooking tool for those who want to get a healthy, delicious meal on the table both swiftly and simply.

Coming out of the highly acclaimed Vermont test kitchens of EatingWell magazine, Healthy in a Hurry serves up a broad range of easy and mouth-watering recipes such as Warm Salmon Salad with Crispy Potatoes, Garlic & Parsley Rubbed Lamb Chops with Greek Couscous Salad, and Chicken with Green Olives & Dried Plums. Editorial Review:

With The Way to Cook, Julia Child creates a second culinary classic. Her first, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, introduced a generation of those used to preparing simple fare to what was then considered gourmet food, demystified classic techniques, and raised our culinary consciousness. In The Way to Cook, she also demystifies cooking techniques and does some consciousness-raising. This time, though, she speaks to everyone with little or no experience in the kitchen, which is most people these days. Always in tune with the moment, and ever the gracious realist, Child (although calling her Julia seems reasonable since she treats us with such open informality) explains in The Way to Cook how to boil an egg and stuff it, as well as how to make a perfect omelet and an elegant soufflé.

To help out readers who lack the most basic knowledge, she organizes the book by techniques rather than by ingredients. Soups are first, a relatively unintimidating choice to build confidence through delicious results such as true French Onion Soup and a contemporary Black Bean Gazpacho. Next come breads, updated to use a food processor to cut the kneading time. The fish chapter covers broiling a salmon steak and creating a sophisticated Crown Mousse of Trout. Chapters on poultry, meats, vegetables, and desserts are equally ample and wide-ranging.

When The Way to Cook was published in 1989, it accompanied a television series. A related set of videotapes, the first to teach cooking comprehensively, was offered simultaneously. However, more than 600 color photos in this book make it fully complete on its own.

The Way to Cook is a good reference volume, a useful gift, and a handsome way to follow Julia's career as she transformed from a French classicist to the ever-evolving, always clear and reliable teacher we have come to adore. --Dana Jacobi

Editorial Review:

Learn what makes a recipe tick, says How to Cook Without a Book author Pam Anderson, and you'll serve great food fast. Recognizing that most cooks feel challenged in the face of daily meal making, Anderson provides a game plan: prepare dishes based on available ingredients and simple cooking techniques you've mastered--not on recipes you've got to look up and ingredients you'll need to shop for--and you maximize the potential of kitchen ease. Cooks looking for a way to address the what-will-we-have-tonight quandary definitively, or those who feel they lack the energy or know-how to tackle cooking every night, should find the book essential. In chapters such as "Simple Stir-Frys" or "Weeknight Ravioli and Lasagna," Anderson presents a particular cooking procedure, provides a recipe that embodies it in its basic form (the protein-adaptable Weeknight Stir-Fry, for example), then offers simple variations (such as Stir-Fried Chicken with Asparagus and Mushrooms or Stir-Fried Shrimp with Pepper and Scallions). Chapters conclude with an at-a-glance review of key technique points. Following Anderson's tips and innovations, lasagna, for example, becomes a weeknight option (use egg-roll wrappers for the pasta, Anderson advises, and forgo the baking); she also shows how, once mastered, her Big Fat Omelet, which serves four, can become the basis for a wide range of lunch and dinner entrées. With a comprehensive pantry section and a dessert chapter that puts frozen puff pastry to work in imaginative ways, the book is a trove of information that cooks can use and depend on. --Arthur Boehm
