Glad I Bought This One!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have been exploring tofu and other meat alternatives since my gastric bypass surgery over a year ago. I still have not been able to stomach meat. I bought several tofu books and vegetarian books and this was by far the superior one I've purchased. What I like about the book:
1. The large easy to read fonts.

2. Each recipe is layed out in steps for preparing the meal.

3. I love that the nutritional values per serving are given!!! There are so many books that do not include that information and its extrememly helpful for persons who are trying to track what they eat.

4. The recipes are appealing and simple and so far all have been mmm! mmm! good to grrreat!!

5. The recipes are broken up into segments like Dips & Spreads; Soups; Side dishes: etc. Then at the begining of each segment is an alphebetical list of the recipes in that section. So you don't always have to go to the index in the back of the book. You can turn to the segment and glance down the list of recipes to find the one you are looking for.

Because I know I will be using the book often, I took it to Fed-ExKinko's and had it spiral bound. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book. Remember its a tofu cookbook, not necessarily a vegetarian cookbook although most recipes in it are vegetarian or can easily be adjusted to fit the vegetarian fare.

Editorial Review:

A best-seller from the '80s, this classic book on cooking with tofu has been updated with lighter, low-fat dishes that showcase tofu's versatility. Includes over 200 recipes, color photos, and instructions for making tofu and soymilk at home.

Editorial Review:

The Classic Book on Southern Cooking

First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet.

Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup.

Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, Cross Creek Cookery guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food -- and writing -- that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook.

Small, but packed with good stuff ... 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

At only 64 pages, this is not a large book. But if you're looking for creative recipes that serve one, this might be the right choice for you.

A few pages are devoted to kitchen basics, but they're clearly targeted to the challenges of cooking for one person. Shopping and storage tips, basic tools and equipment -- these can be a little different when you're not cooking for a family. The advice given here is sound, and goes a long way to minimize waste.

The recipes are organized into categories: Seductive Starters, Light Snacks, Everyday Delights, Fancy Treats, and Sweet Afters. There's a comprehensive index at the end, and a very useful ingredient index near the beginning of the book. The recipes make minimal use of "convenience" products, opting instead for totally "from scratch" cooking with fresh produce and meats.

From the simplicity of Elegant Lemon Tarragon Salmon to the only slightly more complicated Sage Chicken with Cheese Potatoes, there are recipes to suit nearly every taste: vegetarian, poultry, meat, desserts, and side dishes. Most of these I would classify as "treats" -- not your average "meat and potatoes" or grilled chicken breast with broccoli. These recipes tend to be a little more upscale, but still easy to put together if you know basic cooking techniques.

Despite it's small size, this really is a good value for the money.

Editorial Review:

How do you make delicious, one-person meals? It is often difficult to purchase food for one person at the grocery store, but this cookbook promises to give you delicious recipes that you will enjoy and can make anytime. From breakfasts and snacks to lunches and desserts, this cookbook will leave you feeling pampered, not frustrated, when cooking at home. You'll also find tips on meal planning, a guide to ingredients, and a list of essential foods to always keep on hand in your kitchen.

I love this cookbook! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was happy to see the recipies broken down into real portions for one or two people. There are no leftovers and they have taken the guesswork out of measuring and figuring out those fractions when trying to 'shrink' a recipe.

One of THE Best Cookbooks! 5 out of 5 stars.

All of the Taste of Home cookbooks are great! Lots of color pictures, nothing out of the ordenary that you can't find. I love this book with the small sizes. Great meals without a hugh amount of food left over.

helpful hints for una soltera! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is nice for those just starting out on their own or just learning how to cook.

I appreciate the recipes' simplicity and that the book is divided not only according to the different meals but according to different types of meat.

I have made several recipes from this book and think it's very easy to follow and would recommend it to others.

Quick, creative, delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is BY FAR the most clever cookbook I've ever used. I've had it for a while and just recently decided to use it as it is intended. I followed the shopping list and have been making the recipes for the week. My thoughts:

1. recipes are varied, interesting and delicious
2. recipes are easy to prepare, and quick to make
3. the shopping list takes all the planning out of weekly cooking.
4. because you only have to go shopping once, it is fun to see what the next meal will turn out to be.

Seriously, my husband is not a vegan and he has been eagerly asking me each day, so what's for dinner tonight! Because you know you have all the ingredients and they are so simple to make I almost feel like I am eating out each night trying something new. There really is a lot of variety and taste. These recipes were carefully tested because each and everyone so far has gone off without a hitch (and leftovers!)

Worth the $$ 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a really good book. The reason it's a four and not a five is because the 50+ drink recipes are alcholic, and there's only 7 smoothies! There's no pictures in the book, but the text is easy to follow. It doesn't have an index or a table of contents, instead it has a quick guide page which are categorized into "Really Hungry", "Date", "No Money" ...

I would definitely suggest first making the "Very Difficult Muffins" and the "Brownies for Dummies" when you get this book. The "Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwiches" is a nice spruced up basic.

Get it if have some spare $$. Also look at: How to Repair Food

*FYI: For those who don't know, with most baking recipes you can replace half of the oil with (healthier) apple sauce.

Editorial Review:

A hungry student is a bad student. That's why we've put together a cookbook perfect for anyone in school. The rest of the cookbooks out there are written by adults—you know, old people like mom and dad, or your teachers. Not this book. It's written by and for students and it contains everything you could possibly wish for in a cookbook. Besides all the obvious stuff, like cheap, tasty, nutritious and easytomake recipes for foods, drinks and snacks, it also contains weird facts about food, food history, movie quotes and general facts of life—all with a reference to each recipe! This is the student cookbook of student cookbooks. Greattasting food mixed with pop culture's best!

Really a great help 4 out of 5 stars.

As an elderly gentleman who lives by himself in a condo I found this book very helpful in planning my daily meals.
Since owning this book my microwave does more than just heat up left overs. And this was essentially the purpose of this purchase.

Microwave Cooking for One by Marie T. Smith 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book has not been updated for the new microwave ovens of today. Although the recipes are satisfactory the cooking times can't be used. The food would be cooked into a brick. Needless to say, this book should be rewritten.

Just a little dated. 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The recipes are certainly easy enough. But with all the emphasis on precision--a few seconds either way can spoil a dish--its a shame that none of the three basic, recommended Corningware utensils are currently available. I'm sure something can be substituted but we're not off to a good start, here.

microwave cooking for one 5 out of 5 stars.

excellent book. I decided to start eating better and this has helped my limited cooking skills greatly.

Bon appetit! 5 out of 5 stars.

Marie Smith's groundbreaking cookbook will surely win the heart of many a white supremacist, serial killer or secret Al Qaeda cell member too stupid to realize there's a whole grocery section of meals that are a) microwave-ready and b) portioned for one, and only one, psychotic loner.

I like it, but it's NOT for everyone 3 out of 5 stars.
100 of 104 people found this review helpful.

I'm sort of baffled as to how to review this cookbook, because I think it's great for her intended audience, but the marketing is a bit misleading. Someone who is looking for truly SIMPLE meals to make for one person may be a bit dissappointed. So I'll just sum up my impressions of it so far.

First of all, it's a beautiful book. Nicely laid out, gorgeous photographs, personal antecdotes - it's just the sort of book I love browsing through when I'm feeling excited about cooking. I like the stylistic layout of the recipes, with the ingredients in a separate column on the side, and it's printed on thick, quality paper. It's a high quality paperback, perfect for laying flat on the counter.

Her attitude throughout is kind of gratingly pretentious at times. It's as if she expects the readers to look at her as some kind of culinary snob, so she deliberately makes comments to diffuse it, but the comments are sort of more pretentious than just snobbiness. For example, discussing eating polenta straight from the pot with a spoon: "... I make no apologies for my childish eating habits." Or, discussing microwave cooking - "... I will confess I have reheated coffee a few times. I am no longer a total culinary snob." Besides blatent examples like that, her tone and choice of words throughout are sort of exclusionary. I find it amusing and charming, but I'm sure other people will be put off by it.

In her introduction, she plainly says that this is not another book of quick meals for singles. Alot of the dishes in this book are rather lengthy and complicated. Her persian meatball soup, for example, requires mixing and rolling 30 tiny meatballs, soaking and precooking 2 different dried grains, and has 20 ingredients - all for 1-2 servings. On top of that, it's a yogurt based soup, which I found very difficult to not curdle and ruin. Is it good? I'm not sure, because I've tried it twice, investing hours each time, and haven't been successful. My mom saw the recipe and laughed - she's started calling this my "snooty single person cookbook."

Alot of the flavors she likes are strange. Lots of exotic herbs and ethnic spices, (cinnamon in the meatballs was a little strange). The recipes also seem pretty high in fat and cholesterol. Here's my favorite quote of the whole book (about spaghetti alla carbonara): "Yes, I realize that this is a high cholesterol special, but I don't care. I only eat this pasta twice a year. The rest of the time I am a model of Mediterranean dietary restraint." Haha. I guess she doesn't eat the other recipes in the book that call for several eggs, butter, cheese and heavy cream.

But if you can get past the pretentiousness, the apparent unhealthiness, and the complicated nature of some recipes, - most of them are REALLY good. The poached salmon is SO delicious that it's my new favorite way to eat salmon. All of the egg dishes are great, so are some of the soups.

I consider myself somewhat of an amatuer gourmet. I enjoy grocery shopping and reading cookbooks and trying new recipes, and most nights it is just me for dinner. I like this book because the food is good, and reading it makes me want to become a true gourmet. I think that I'm probably close to her target audience.

Editorial Review:

Most recipes serve four to six people, leaving the solo cook in a predicament. Enter acclaimed cookbook author Joyce Goldstein and her stellar repertoire of meals that are fun for one. From hearty recipes like Spicy Tortilla and Lime Soup and Tuscan Style Rib-Eye Steak with Rosemary and Garlic, to dressed-up salads and seasonal fruit gratins, each dish is designed to serve one in style. Essential tips and techniques offer valuable advice on smart shopping for one and stocking the pantry. Numerous recipe variations take advantage of seasonal ingredients, while an array of sauces can turn that salmon fillet or lamb steak into a gourmet feast. When the good company is your own, Solo Suppers is the way to go.

The year of spaghetti...or beans...or rice... 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

What do you cook for yourself when you are cooking and eating alone? This anthology is full of musings, great ideas, and confessions from a variety of writers who spill the beans on their solitary dining habits. It's definitely not a cookbook though there are some recipes included in the essays. Truffled Egg Toast and Single Girl Salmon; Salsa Rosa for One and White-on-White Lunch for When No One Is Looking (egg noodles and cottage cheese); Kippers Mash. See what I mean? Not a cookbook. But if you are interested in the diversity of U.S. attitudes toward cooking and eating, you will find the twenty-six essays in this book entertaining.

Phoebe Nobles, for example, eats fresh asparagus every day of its short season in Michigan, inspired by a bronze Spargelfrau statue in "some famous little asparagus town in Germany." Steamed, roasted, grilled, it's the perfect finger food. Late in the season when you are "flagging," break it into pieces and hide it inside things. In a particularly personal section of this essay, Ms. Nobles advises us that she enjoys the fresh vegetable aroma of the urine of asparagus eaters. Having never seen this fact mentioned in my five decades as a reader, I was surprised to find it referenced in two books within a month (this one, and Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult).

The ever-entertaining Steve Almond cheated a bit on the brief. Pleading Jewishness, he claims to be bound by Mosaic law to feed anyone who comes to call, whether they want to eat or not. He claims that cooking for others is a "tremendous rush" and that writers, forced to work alone, are denied that pleasure of ulteriority in their work. He feels guilty about cooking well for himself and does anything in his power to lure others to eat with him. As a last resort he eats alone but denies himself the extra touches. His recipe contribution may be the most appealing in the book: Grill-Curried Shrimp Quesarito with Avocado Raita.

Several of the writers claim that when cooking for themselves they eat the same thing day after day; beans, or potatoes, or rice. One woman eats in the bathtub, one man changes to a jacket and tie and uses a freshly ironed cloth napkin. The possibilities are endless. Finances, time, and the size and equipage of the kitchen are considerations, but the main consideration is how you feel about treating yourself as an honored guest at your table.

Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant is a pleasant read for anyone who enjoys memoirs and food. Recommended.

Linda Bulger, 2008
