Really a great help 4 out of 5 stars.

As an elderly gentleman who lives by himself in a condo I found this book very helpful in planning my daily meals.
Since owning this book my microwave does more than just heat up left overs. And this was essentially the purpose of this purchase.

Microwave Cooking for One by Marie T. Smith 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book has not been updated for the new microwave ovens of today. Although the recipes are satisfactory the cooking times can't be used. The food would be cooked into a brick. Needless to say, this book should be rewritten.

Just a little dated. 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The recipes are certainly easy enough. But with all the emphasis on precision--a few seconds either way can spoil a dish--its a shame that none of the three basic, recommended Corningware utensils are currently available. I'm sure something can be substituted but we're not off to a good start, here.

microwave cooking for one 5 out of 5 stars.

excellent book. I decided to start eating better and this has helped my limited cooking skills greatly.

Bon appetit! 5 out of 5 stars.

Marie Smith's groundbreaking cookbook will surely win the heart of many a white supremacist, serial killer or secret Al Qaeda cell member too stupid to realize there's a whole grocery section of meals that are a) microwave-ready and b) portioned for one, and only one, psychotic loner.

Great cookbook for one or two people 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook. Lots of great recipes, broken up into breakfast, beef/pork, chicken/turkey, seafood, vegetarian, and dessert sections. It is not a huge cookbook, but has lots of variety. The recipes do not require too many ingredients and no hard-to-find ingredients like some other cookbooks. The recipes also have low fat or fast labels (or both) on them. This cookbook also has many pictures and nutritional breakdowns for every recipe. The only thing I do not like about this cookbook is some recipes often require lots of pots and pans and sometimes too many things going on at once (but I'm a beginner cook though). However, with practice, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. I've made about 10 recipes so far and loved every one! There was no review of this book when I bought it, so I was a little nervous, but very impressed!

Small, but packed with good stuff ... 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

At only 64 pages, this is not a large book. But if you're looking for creative recipes that serve one, this might be the right choice for you.

A few pages are devoted to kitchen basics, but they're clearly targeted to the challenges of cooking for one person. Shopping and storage tips, basic tools and equipment -- these can be a little different when you're not cooking for a family. The advice given here is sound, and goes a long way to minimize waste.

The recipes are organized into categories: Seductive Starters, Light Snacks, Everyday Delights, Fancy Treats, and Sweet Afters. There's a comprehensive index at the end, and a very useful ingredient index near the beginning of the book. The recipes make minimal use of "convenience" products, opting instead for totally "from scratch" cooking with fresh produce and meats.

From the simplicity of Elegant Lemon Tarragon Salmon to the only slightly more complicated Sage Chicken with Cheese Potatoes, there are recipes to suit nearly every taste: vegetarian, poultry, meat, desserts, and side dishes. Most of these I would classify as "treats" -- not your average "meat and potatoes" or grilled chicken breast with broccoli. These recipes tend to be a little more upscale, but still easy to put together if you know basic cooking techniques.

Despite it's small size, this really is a good value for the money.

Editorial Review:

How do you make delicious, one-person meals? It is often difficult to purchase food for one person at the grocery store, but this cookbook promises to give you delicious recipes that you will enjoy and can make anytime. From breakfasts and snacks to lunches and desserts, this cookbook will leave you feeling pampered, not frustrated, when cooking at home. You'll also find tips on meal planning, a guide to ingredients, and a list of essential foods to always keep on hand in your kitchen.

The Scavengers Guide to Haute Cuisine 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Steven Rinella, big game hunter of sparrows and squirrels, doesn't know the first thing about the value of wildlife to human well being. Wild birds eat insects, including mosquitoes. Squirrels bury acorns and thus spread oak trees across the landscape, providing food for more wildlife. During the reign of Chairman Mao, the Chinese tried to eradicate small birds, believing they were pests. Instead, they discovered that they were critically important predators of crop pests. If we continue to disregard the value of wildlife, as Rinella does out of ignorance, we do so at our peril.
He is the real backyard pest and should be ignored, both for his advocacy of destroying wildlife and his claims to haute cuisine.

Editorial Review:

A hybrid of memoir, cookbook, and travelogue, and a love song to hunting and fishing and the American wild, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is about one man's quest to live off the land and recreate the recipes from Escoffier's Le Guide Culinaire, the 1903 magnum opus.Nature writer Steven Rinella embarks on a yearlong journey across America, trying to locate the bizarre, often esoteric ingredient of Le Guide Culinaire. His adventures take him fishing for stingrays on a Florida beach; skinning eels with an upstate New Yorker who keeps an emu as company; and hunting mountain goats on the snow-covered cliffs of Alaska's Chugach Range.Praised by reviewers for its lyrical prose and humor, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is a narrative that opens up a deeper understanding of the things we eat and our place in the natural world.

Editorial Review:

A delightful and unexpected collection of pieces by writers, foodies, and others-including Nora Ephron, Marcella Hazan, and Ann Patchett-on the distinctive experiences of cooking for one and dining alone.

If, sooner or later, we all face the prospect of eating alone, then Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant provides the perfect set of instructions. In this unique collection, twenty-six writers and foodies invite readers into their kitchens to reflect on the secret meals they make for themselves when no one else is looking: the indulgent truffled egg sandwich, the comforting bowl of black beans, the bracing anchovy fillet on buttered toast.

From Italy to New York to Cape Cod to Thailand, from M. F. K. Fisher to Steve Almond to Nora Ephron, the experiences collected in this book are as diverse, moving, hilarious, and uplifting as the meals they describe. Haruki Murakami finds solace in spaghetti. Ephron mends a broken heart with mashed potatoes in bed. Ann Patchett trades the gourmet food she cooks for others for endless snacks involving saltines. Marcella Hazan, responsible for bringing sophisticated Italian cuisine into American homes, craves a simple grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich. Courtney Eldridge, divorced from a fancy chef, reconnects with the salsa she learned to cook from her cash-strapped mother. Rosa Jurjevics reflects on the influence of her mother, Laurie Colwin, as she stocks her home with salty treats. Almost all of the essays include recipes, making this book the perfect companion for a happy, lonely-or just hungry-evening home alone.

Part solace, part celebration, part handbook, Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant offers a wealth of company, inspiration, and humor-and, finally, recipes that require no division or subtraction.

It's Greek (or New Zealand) to me 3 out of 5 stars.
44 of 47 people found this review helpful.

Not to say this isn't a fine book. What I wish I'd realized is that it's from New Zealand. I am in the United States. Some measurements are metric. Some aren't. Many measurements are by weight, so have a kitchen scale handy. Temps are celsius. I'll have to do many conversions. Other problems: many things have different names than we use here, so I have to translate to figure out what they are. Also, some things are not foods available here, as far as I know, like quark. What is that?

Cookbooks are better if they are from your region, in terms of measurement and temperature systems -- and available ingredients. Some of the cakes sound bizarre to me for that reason, but there are lots of interesting-sounding items to try!

Editorial Review:

There is something very appealing about a small, individual cake. Enticing and charming, the versatility of the little cake means it can double as the perfect dessert. It's not suprising that smart little cakes are featured on café menus all around the world. And it is not suprising that Julie Le Clerc is the creative genius behind these fabulous recipes with seriously good flavours.

Editorial Review:

More than simply a cookbook, The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Cookery combines unpretentious, delectable recipes with the wit and wisdom of those who have prepared and eaten such foods for generations. Drawn from the wealth of material gathered by Foxfire students, this engaging volume evokes the foodways of a southern Appalachian community.

Illustrated with photographs of the kitchens, people, and foods of Appalachia, this captivating collection contains more than 500 recipes. A sampling of favorites includes rhubarb cobbler, sassafras tea, fried quail, Brunswick stew, angel flake biscuits, seven-day cole slaw, and lime pickles. The book also explains traditional methods of preparing and preserving food, including directions for making homemade yeast, curing pork, 'gritting' corn, canning foods, cooking with a wood stove or fireplace, and preparing wild game.

Originally published in 1984, the cookbook earned high praise from both food editors and folklorists. It returns with its bounty of practical information and personal recollections as an outstanding record of a folk heritage.

Okay for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
55 of 57 people found this review helpful.

This book introduces some pretty basic recipes with common ingredients. Since I'm a college student living on my own, these simple recipes are a welcome respite from the usual "open the can and pop it in the microwave" mentality. Also it is much easier to find a tasty dish since this book is shorter than, say, Joy of Cooking. Still there are many larger and more comprehsive books out there that one can turn into a cooking-for-one book through simple division.

A disappointing cookbook 1 out of 5 stars.
42 of 46 people found this review helpful.

If your skill level is beyond boiling pasta noodles and making a tossed salad, then this is not the cookbook for you. While it is not a complete waste, it was disappointing. If you're looking for a great cookbook for single people and couples, I highly recommend Jane Doerfer's, Going Solo In The Kitchen. It is an excellent mix of very simple and more challenging recipes, and it presents a lot of variety.

Nice book 4 out of 5 stars.

The recipes in this book are good, but it lacks pictures! Pictures would make it much more helpful and enjoyable.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As a single, male graduate student in engineering living alone in a studio apartment, "Thou shalt not cook" used to be one of my Ten Commmandments. After almost a year, I finally got tired of all the hamburgers, pizza, and Subway sandwiches. The cost of eating out all the time was also hurting me financially. I bought this book after reading the recommendations on Amazon, and I must say it has been very satisfying. The recipes are really fast and easy to put together, and the dishes are delicious. I was at first a little disappointed at the lack of pictures, but soon found out there wasn't really a great need for them because the recipes are simple enough to manage with the instructions only. I didn't like a few of the dishes, but then there could never be a cook book with a hundred recipes where every single one of them appeal to everyone. I can't believe I'm actually enjoying cooking now, and having different, tasty meals every day at such low cost and effort. Yummy! Be gone all you junk food!

Editorial Review:

Home alone? The Fifteen-Minute Single Gourmet shows how to shop fast and buy small amounts, then turn fresh ingredients into dishes rarely enjoyed when eating solo chez-vous. Mitchell makes a good case for cooking from scratch, asserting that it's healthier for both body and soul. She then helps you keep kitchen time to a minimum. You really can whip up her Tandoori Chicken, Sole with Currant-Almond Sauce, Zesty Black Bean Soup and 97 other varied dishes in about 15 minutes--and enjoy the results. To keep your larder lean, Mitchell suggests lots of variations for dishes. They handily help you use up ingredients you can't buy in single-serve sizes. There are also loads of tips that help inexperienced cooks and interest those who are more at ease in the kitchen.

How to prepare simple, delicious meals on the trail

If you think eating in the backcountry means either cooking out of your car trunk on a multiburner stove or subsisting on dried fruit and freeze-dried pouch food, think again. In the first case you’re not really in the backcountry, and in the second case, says Don Jacobson, you’re not really eating.

The One Pan Gourmet shows you how to enjoy Mother Nature and enjoy easy, tasty, and satisfying meals using fresh ingredients and only one pan, pot, or small oven.

Don has gathered and trail-tested all the recipes, and he's added some new favorites for this edition. He's also included up-to-date information on cookware, outdoor stoves, and water filtration, as well as:

  • More than 175 recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert
  • Vegetarian options and low-fat choices
  • Provisioning and packing advice
  • Weekend menu plans for pan, pot, and oven

"Will improve the eating habits of all hikers. Gives the overnighter a delightful (yet luxurious) addition of tasteful, well-devised meals that require only one pan, pot, or do-it-yourself stove."—Sierra Outdoors

"Jammed full of a wide variety of dishes."—Sea Kayaker
