Great cookbook for one or two people 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook. Lots of great recipes, broken up into breakfast, beef/pork, chicken/turkey, seafood, vegetarian, and dessert sections. It is not a huge cookbook, but has lots of variety. The recipes do not require too many ingredients and no hard-to-find ingredients like some other cookbooks. The recipes also have low fat or fast labels (or both) on them. This cookbook also has many pictures and nutritional breakdowns for every recipe. The only thing I do not like about this cookbook is some recipes often require lots of pots and pans and sometimes too many things going on at once (but I'm a beginner cook though). However, with practice, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. I've made about 10 recipes so far and loved every one! There was no review of this book when I bought it, so I was a little nervous, but very impressed!

Editorial Review:

More than 70 main entree recipes including simple salad combinations, quick-toss pasta, and easy desserts.

Variety of comfort foods—ethnic, low-fat, and quick.

A great first cookbook for anyone who can't cook ! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I first bought this book when I was 28 years old, and hadn't a clue about cooking. If you don't know how to cook, this book will take you by the hand step by step all the while telling a funny stories about his aunt gertie and the Mole. to this day I get compliments on a lasagna which I got from this cookbook, people tell me its the best they've ever tasted. I remember back in 1989 when I first bought it, thinking I hope I learn something? this cookbook gave me the confidence to keep on cooking. It is not like any other cookbook, most of which expect you to know cooking terms like "sweat the carrots or render this or separate that" Once you finish going through this cookbook you will be ready to tackle the other more intimidating cookbooks out there. a mighty fine book.

Essential guide for the Non-cook 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the book to get if you are like me, and have trouble boiling an egg. Thorson really knows his stuff and shares his secrets for making easy dishes that men crave. Starting relatively simple and moving on to more complex dinners, Thorson keeps you entertained with anecdotes all the way. Forget all those "Men's cookbooks" put out by Men's magazines. This is the one to get.

It's Greek (or New Zealand) to me 3 out of 5 stars.
46 of 49 people found this review helpful.

Not to say this isn't a fine book. What I wish I'd realized is that it's from New Zealand. I am in the United States. Some measurements are metric. Some aren't. Many measurements are by weight, so have a kitchen scale handy. Temps are celsius. I'll have to do many conversions. Other problems: many things have different names than we use here, so I have to translate to figure out what they are. Also, some things are not foods available here, as far as I know, like quark. What is that?

Cookbooks are better if they are from your region, in terms of measurement and temperature systems -- and available ingredients. Some of the cakes sound bizarre to me for that reason, but there are lots of interesting-sounding items to try!

Editorial Review:

There is something very appealing about a small, individual cake. Enticing and charming, the versatility of the little cake means it can double as the perfect dessert. It's not suprising that smart little cakes are featured on café menus all around the world. And it is not suprising that Julie Le Clerc is the creative genius behind these fabulous recipes with seriously good flavours.

Editorial Review:

Most men between the ages of 18 and 26 are cuisine-challenged. When it's time for a meal, they are often faced with frozen macaroni and cheese, a packet of ramen noodles, or the phone to order take-out. Not only is this not healthy, it doesn't impress girls and it's a waste of money. And, as self-taught chef Kevin Telles Roberts can tell you, it is so unnecessary.

Now the man who has cooked for extreme sports athletes and the coolest television stars gives us Munchies--the hip, edgy, no-fear cookbook for young adults who think their kitchen is just a large room to store the refrigerator in.

With more than 100 foolproof recipes created for even the most inexperienced cook, Roberts cooks the food you love with minimal damage and maximum impact. Nuclear Wings, Garlic Fries, and Killer Shark Tacos that will leave you party guests gasping. Quick Quesadillas for solo late-night snacks. Tater-Tot Hash and Roman Toast--the new breakfast for champions. Munchies has recipes for veggies and fish as well. Pistachio-Crusted Halibut for when you suddenly need to impress a dinner date. Beer-Soaked Steak or Ponzu Chicken for when you want to fire up the grill, as well as great summer side salads to accompany your meal. Finally, there are recipes for desserts such as Peanut Butter Cookies or Baked Cinnamon Apples that you can make even if you've never turned on your oven. Munchies will show you how to cook the food that you want to eat.

Lost in a fast-food, cold leftovers, breakfast-bar wilderness? From your college dorm to the smallest apartment with no dishwaser, Munchies will transform your cooking with confidence and creativity. Hip, funny, and totally accessible, Roberts cooks like the rest of us and makes it taste good.

I've learned something 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

If this book has taught me anything its how to make smaller portions. I came from from a big family and we cooked big meals. However, being a single parent, I had to change my methods or else be subjected to a life long experience of too much leftovers.

I'm not a vegetarian but the recipes are delicious. They are also quick and easy to prepare.

wow 4 out of 5 stars.

For the single person or even a couple (just double everything), this is a great cookbook. It has weekly menues for lunch and dinner (5 weeks for summer and 5 for winter) complete with a shopping list in from of each week. This certianly makes meal planning a breeze if it is folowed!! All the reciepts are even in both metic and american measurements.

This book is so great, I had to write a review! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've never come back and written a review on Amazon before, but this book is so good - I just had to! I received the book for Christmas and tried a few of the receipes and loved them. This is my first week of following the "meal plan". The author makes it so easy to do all your grocery shopping and to cook simple, delicious meals. I am doubling everything and cooking for two. So far we have well enough for both of us plus leftovers for one or two lunches. When non-vegans smirk and say "ew, what do you eat?!" I am now proud to rattle off a list of gourmet-sounding recipes that sound enticing to even meat eaters, but are simple to prepare. The book is small (but has a 10 full weeks of recipes) and inexpensive - why not give it a try?

Editorial Review:

Here is a mouth-watering selection of quick and easy-to-prepare vegan menus, all suitable for one person.

The Scavengers Guide to Haute Cuisine 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Steven Rinella, big game hunter of sparrows and squirrels, doesn't know the first thing about the value of wildlife to human well being. Wild birds eat insects, including mosquitoes. Squirrels bury acorns and thus spread oak trees across the landscape, providing food for more wildlife. During the reign of Chairman Mao, the Chinese tried to eradicate small birds, believing they were pests. Instead, they discovered that they were critically important predators of crop pests. If we continue to disregard the value of wildlife, as Rinella does out of ignorance, we do so at our peril.
He is the real backyard pest and should be ignored, both for his advocacy of destroying wildlife and his claims to haute cuisine.

Editorial Review:

A hybrid of memoir, cookbook, and travelogue, and a love song to hunting and fishing and the American wild, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is about one man's quest to live off the land and recreate the recipes from Escoffier's Le Guide Culinaire, the 1903 magnum opus.Nature writer Steven Rinella embarks on a yearlong journey across America, trying to locate the bizarre, often esoteric ingredient of Le Guide Culinaire. His adventures take him fishing for stingrays on a Florida beach; skinning eels with an upstate New Yorker who keeps an emu as company; and hunting mountain goats on the snow-covered cliffs of Alaska's Chugach Range.Praised by reviewers for its lyrical prose and humor, The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine is a narrative that opens up a deeper understanding of the things we eat and our place in the natural world.

"THE FRUGS" BRINGS THE FAMILY BACK TO THE TABLE! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My title blurb say it all. This book is filled with great recipes, history and family tradition! Jeff Smith spoke about interesting traditions and origins on his entertaining PBS show. Before 'The Food Network' we had the witty and talented 'Frugal Gourmet'. This book deals with some simplistic, yet very good classic family dishes. Nothing fancy, just great traditional family food! Something the world seems to be missing these days is time spent in the kitchen with the family preparing meals for "get togethers". Make time for this book, your family and friends! Even if your not a "religious" person these are words to live by.

This is yet another excellent cook book by Jeff Smith! It's full of great recipes and stories by a very talented cook and writer. This one focuses on family cooking. I have used many of these recipes and found them to be very good. Being a home grown cook myself and having had many of my grandmother's classic recipes handed down to me, I found this book to be very helpful in expanding my culinary taste buds.

Jeff Smith entertained us for years on his PBS program 'The Frugal Gourmet'. Not only did he teach us many savory dishes, he also educated us. Not satisfied with just cooking delicious meals for his viewers, he would give detailed history lessons about the origins of the dish and made it all a lot of fun!

This may be Mr. Smiths best cook book and it is a worthy edition to everyone's cook book library. I own and have read many, if not all of his cook books, not only for the man's knowledge of cooking, but his incredible wit! This guy was funny and I would have loved to have hung out and throw a few beers down with him.

Unfortunately, this man had some very seriously bad press released about his personal life and well..... I am not one to spread rumors.....he seemed like a great guy and sadly he died before he was able to clear his name.

R.I.P. Frugs!
