Betty Crocker's Dinner for Two Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition as described. I even got an e-mail confirming my purchase, which was very nice. However, the paperback I received was not a copy of the hardcover spiral-back edition I was expecting, although the title was the same. It was not the book I wanted and did not contain the same recipes or format. But this is not the seller's fault -- simply the optimistic hopes of the purchaser, searching for a First Edition of the 1958 edition of the General Mills, Inc., book by this title. Thanks for your efforts.

Wore my copy out! 5 out of 5 stars.

My mom's 1958 edition was used faithfully by her, and passed on to me. It is by far the best cookbook I've read/used...and I read cookbooks frequently. If you can find this book, buy it!

The BEST, most helpful basic cook-book for everyday. 5 out of 5 stars.

With 100-plus cookbooks in three languages and thousands of clipped recipes, this is the book I use most. For simple pot roast, tomato aspic, and apple pie - the stuff of everyday meals - I search the other books - and find the easy recipe here. In the 1958 edition! With the pages falling out! And everything tastes good. You'll love it, too!

The essential fish cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is organized alphabetically; to give a sense of its scope it begins:aalmutter, abalone, akule, Alaska pollock, alga, anchovy, Artic char, ark shell, aspic (not a fish but useful for fish recipes), Atka mackerel, barnacle, barracuda ... in short, you'll be hard pressed to find in your fish market something not covered here.

For each fish, the book gives information regarding their looks (there are ample photos), where they grow, their culinary uses ... and for many of the fish, recipes. To take a simple example, for black sea bass it gives recipes for steamed sea bass, sea bass Lisbon style, and sea bass chowder.

The recipes are reliable - easy to follow and well proportioned. This is everything you'll ever need or want in a fish cooking resource.

This is the best source for fish info, a must an any kitchen 5 out of 5 stars.

Easy to use, accurate basic knowledge on the origin, taste, texture, and even good suggestions for prepareing almost any fish under the water!

More than a cook book 5 out of 5 stars.

A plethora of information about hundreds of species of fish- How they are classed and where they inhabit, historical and cultural importance of many fishes, identification of fish, quality of meat and how to cook them. Incredibly interesting and useful!

A fantastic offering from Williamsburg! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First of all, they print and publish this little gem on property down in Colonial Williamsburg. You can visit the printing shop and watch them make the books right there! Second, the recipes and introductions to the sections are right out of old time Virginia. Not only are there a multitude of recipes to choose from with accurate sources named, but the advice on how to serve and the style with which these dishes were offered is incredible.

Each section is given a page or two of an intro on how a certain food (soup, meat, fish, etc.) was used in Colonial Williamsburg and across Virginia. There would be a little history and even some documented accounts from those that lived during the times on specific foods, venues, and the like. It really is a trip back in time. The recipes themselves are kept in the same language, so a few of them use terms and phrases no longer used in this day and age. A good dictionary or a culinary guide should get you through those recipes. Still, most are easily understandable and not difficult to make at all. Best of all, they keep true to the originals from way back when. Some of the entries even have alternate ways of preparing the same dish, either more updated or using differing ingredients.

Overall, this is a fantastic cookbook, not only chock full of recipes, but with a wealth of knowledge about the area and the times. If you like history and cooking (especially themed cooking), this is a must-have and should be on your shelf right away. Happy eating and enjoy!

Editorial Review:

These favorite "receipts" are known to have been used in Virginia households in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Williamsburg Art of Cookery allows modern cooks to offer the same time-tested fare that pleased our ancestors.

Victorian Fantasy of Rome 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Vehling was a professional chef, not a scholar of Latin, and his grasp of Latin was limited, so his translations are not good. Also they are not based on the earliest available copies of the Apician cookbook. Instead, he used humanistically "enhanced" Renaissance texts. And he didn't understand the history of the various editions he was looking at. Thus Vehling's translations are full of gross inaccuracies. When his book was first published, readers had little access to anything much better. But today there are quite a few much more accurate translations, and more accurate translations lead to more accurate interpretations, when one wants to cook a recipe.

I won't even go into an analysis of his faulty translations, but, assuming most buyers want to cook food of the Roman Empire, I'll go straight to examples in his worked-out recipes...

Vehling uses a roux (a technique in which flour is browned or at least lightly colored in hot fat before having the fluid stirred in) to thicken sauces in many of his recipes. This technique was not common until the 17th century. Clearly the Romans used other techniques, and we can use them, too.

Vehling includes vegetables not known in Europe even in the 15th century, let alone during the Roman Empire, such as French beans aka green beans aka string beans (when the Romans used green fava beans, quite a different item), and bell peppers and kidney beans and pumkpins (which are all native to the Americas, unknown to Europeans until the 16th century).

In one recipe he even substitutes pate à choux (used for things like eclairs and cream puffs) for splet or emmer grits (early forms of wheat)!

Additionally, he substitutes "broth" for "liquamen", that is, fish sauce, one of the hallmarks of Ancient Roman cuisine!!!

In fact, in many of his worked out recipes he "corrects" the original recipe to make it more like modern European cuisine, losing the flavor of the original and destroying its Roman character. Some of his worked out recipes are so transformed as to be nearly unrecognizable when compared to the original recipes.

If there were no other translations available, Vehling might be useful. But there are. And Vehling is misleading, erroneous, and wrong. Get a better book.

Editorial Review:

Oldest known cookbook in existence offers readers a clear picture of what foods Romans ate, how they prepared them. Actual recipes — from fig fed pork and salt fish balls in wine sauce to pumpkin Alexander style, nut custard turnovers and rose pie. 49 illustrations.

Hard to follow 1 out of 5 stars.
120 of 130 people found this review helpful.

I was hoping for more "general" information about the convection oven. Plus, I am a firm believer in PICTURES! Pictures help make recipes easier to follow. I also expected more common dishes, some of the ingredients are rather hard (and expensive) to come by.

Convection cooking saves time, enhances flavor and produces beautifully browned dishes. In this book, you'll find more than 100 recipes for all categories of foods using built-in and countertop convection ovens.

Editorial Review:

This recipe book was developed and designed by a man for men. Let me explain, I was working away from home, 1100 miles away and had to cook for myself. I realized that I didn't want to spend hours in the kitchen cooking and having to wash all the cooking pots and utensils that went along with making a meal. The problem was that I had no recipes that were for single people and absolutely none for single men. I asked my wife to send me all the recipes she had or could find that accomplished two goals. 1. I wanted recipes that I would like and that could be made in a single container. 2. The recipe could not take over one hour to make. My wife sent me all the recipes she could find or that our relatives had. I also asked friends at work for recipes. After I received them I realized that I was not alone and that there were thousands of single men who were also in the same boat as I, hence the idea to make a recipe book for men. This book is unique in that it was made for men by a man. You will see that the recipe is on the left side and that a complete shopping list for the recipe is on the right. Men, I thought, would need help buying the items to make the recipes. You will also see that there are recipes covering Chicken, Beef, Pork and Ham, Soups, Salads and my favorite section, Things That Go With Beer! You choose the beer. Enjoy!

This book is IT in terms of crock pot cookery. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Why is my Mike Roy paperback torn, smudged, and held together by a rubber band? Because Mike Roy's book is THE best &, therefore, I have used it beyond its natural life. Why? (1) He had an understanding of herbs & spices. (2) He knew that thickening the sauce requires some butter and flour, not flour & water. (3) He actually experimented with the recipes and had a taste refined enough to evaluate the outcome.

Best book I've found for crock cooking 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book when I was in college nineteen years ago. The Manhattan clam chowder is among the best recipes.

This book deserves to be in print!

This book is no crock! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Not only are all the recipes top notch, but the explanatory comments are extremely informative and stylishly written. This is the most honest crockpot recipe book I've read, one that levels with readers about what can or cannot be cooked successfully using these handy appliances.

I used to watch and listen to Mike Roy's cooking shows on TV and radio in Los Angeles years ago, so whenever I consult this book it takes me back to that time.
