How to prepare simple, delicious meals on the trail

If you think eating in the backcountry means either cooking out of your car trunk on a multiburner stove or subsisting on dried fruit and freeze-dried pouch food, think again. In the first case you’re not really in the backcountry, and in the second case, says Don Jacobson, you’re not really eating.

The One Pan Gourmet shows you how to enjoy Mother Nature and enjoy easy, tasty, and satisfying meals using fresh ingredients and only one pan, pot, or small oven.

Don has gathered and trail-tested all the recipes, and he's added some new favorites for this edition. He's also included up-to-date information on cookware, outdoor stoves, and water filtration, as well as:

  • More than 175 recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert
  • Vegetarian options and low-fat choices
  • Provisioning and packing advice
  • Weekend menu plans for pan, pot, and oven

"Will improve the eating habits of all hikers. Gives the overnighter a delightful (yet luxurious) addition of tasteful, well-devised meals that require only one pan, pot, or do-it-yourself stove."—Sierra Outdoors

"Jammed full of a wide variety of dishes."—Sea Kayaker

"Offers a unique perspective on using fresh foods in the wild."—American Hiker

The essential fish cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is organized alphabetically; to give a sense of its scope it begins:aalmutter, abalone, akule, Alaska pollock, alga, anchovy, Artic char, ark shell, aspic (not a fish but useful for fish recipes), Atka mackerel, barnacle, barracuda ... in short, you'll be hard pressed to find in your fish market something not covered here.

For each fish, the book gives information regarding their looks (there are ample photos), where they grow, their culinary uses ... and for many of the fish, recipes. To take a simple example, for black sea bass it gives recipes for steamed sea bass, sea bass Lisbon style, and sea bass chowder.

The recipes are reliable - easy to follow and well proportioned. This is everything you'll ever need or want in a fish cooking resource.

This is the best source for fish info, a must an any kitchen 5 out of 5 stars.

Easy to use, accurate basic knowledge on the origin, taste, texture, and even good suggestions for prepareing almost any fish under the water!

More than a cook book 5 out of 5 stars.

A plethora of information about hundreds of species of fish- How they are classed and where they inhabit, historical and cultural importance of many fishes, identification of fish, quality of meat and how to cook them. Incredibly interesting and useful!

Easy and authentic local dishes 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Published with a ring-style binder that allows the pages to lay out flat on a kitchen counter or table, the "World Hospitality Cookbook" showcases a superb series of easy-to-prepare recipes that have been compiled, organized and edited by the culinary team of Erma Sider, Dan Harman, and Betty Harman. There are dishes for every part of the meal and every dining occasion including appetizers, beverages, breads, soups, salads, dressings, relishes, vegetables, meats, main dishes, and desserts. Of special note is the chapter devoted to 'Menus by Country'. The featured dishes in this highly recommended kitchen cookbook range from the Coconut Bread of Brazil; to an Avocado Dip from Argentina; to a Tamaulipeca Salad from Mexico; to an Orange Chutney from India; to Fried Cauliflower from Egypt; to Stuffed Pork Roast from Denmark; a Cornmeal Porridge from Zimbabwe; to a Chocolate Butter Cream Torte from Germany. The "World Hospitality Cookbook" clearly lives up to its title and would make a superb (and popular!) addition to any kitchen cookbook collection.

This book is IT in terms of crock pot cookery. 5 out of 5 stars.

Why is my Mike Roy paperback torn, smudged, and held together by a rubber band? Because Mike Roy's book is THE best &, therefore, I have used it beyond its natural life. Why? (1) He had an understanding of herbs & spices. (2) He knew that thickening the sauce requires some butter and flour, not flour & water. (3) He actually experimented with the recipes and had a taste refined enough to evaluate the outcome.

Best book I've found for crock cooking 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book when I was in college nineteen years ago. The Manhattan clam chowder is among the best recipes.

This book deserves to be in print!

This book is no crock! 5 out of 5 stars.

Not only are all the recipes top notch, but the explanatory comments are extremely informative and stylishly written. This is the most honest crockpot recipe book I've read, one that levels with readers about what can or cannot be cooked successfully using these handy appliances.

I used to watch and listen to Mike Roy's cooking shows on TV and radio in Los Angeles years ago, so whenever I consult this book it takes me back to that time.

Betty Crocker's Dinner for Two Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition as described. I even got an e-mail confirming my purchase, which was very nice. However, the paperback I received was not a copy of the hardcover spiral-back edition I was expecting, although the title was the same. It was not the book I wanted and did not contain the same recipes or format. But this is not the seller's fault -- simply the optimistic hopes of the purchaser, searching for a First Edition of the 1958 edition of the General Mills, Inc., book by this title. Thanks for your efforts.

Wore my copy out! 5 out of 5 stars.

My mom's 1958 edition was used faithfully by her, and passed on to me. It is by far the best cookbook I've read/used...and I read cookbooks frequently. If you can find this book, buy it!

The BEST, most helpful basic cook-book for everyday. 5 out of 5 stars.

With 100-plus cookbooks in three languages and thousands of clipped recipes, this is the book I use most. For simple pot roast, tomato aspic, and apple pie - the stuff of everyday meals - I search the other books - and find the easy recipe here. In the 1958 edition! With the pages falling out! And everything tastes good. You'll love it, too!
