Not my thing 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I gave this three stars because for those with more gourmet tastes, this book would probably be a great addition to their cookbook library. I personally however didn't care for this book much at all. There's a few recipes I'll try and I made note of a few suggested cooking times from the dictionary section of the book, but I'm glad I checked this out from the library rather than spend money on it. I would have been greatly disappointed with the purchase.

Editorial Review:

Learn to use your microwave oven to do everything you hoped it could and more with breakthrough techniques and recipes that will change the way you cook forever.

First published in 1987, Barbara Kafka's Microwave Gourmet redefined the way people thought about the microwave oven. Microwave Gourmet is the only book that clarifies which dishes are at their best when made in the microwave, which are the worst, and why.

There are over six hundred delicious recipes for everything you can conceivably want classics like Filet of Sole with Almonds and Turkey with Cranberry Sauce and Saffron Risotto, plus old-fashioned favorites such as Baked Macaroni and Cheese and an American Chocolate Layer Cake that cook up in five to ten minutes. Microwave Gourmet lets you eat good, homemade food in no time at all.

Microwave Gourmet is an indispensable reference and a ground-breaking book that will change your mind about using the microwave forever.

Editorial Review:

For the legions of harried moms who have tossed in the dishtowel on cooking healthy meals (or any meals!), the easiest-ever guide for bringing super nutrition back to the kitchen.

Getting dinner on the table night after night can be a challenge. So it’s no surprise that busy moms often rely on fast food, takeout, and convenience meals like macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and fries. The kids love it but the drawback is that little twinge of guilt moms feel every time they feed their family another not-so-healthy meal. At the end of the day, many children end up with a poor diet high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories … a major factor in the rising rates of obesity.

Finally, here are realistic guidelines designed to give families a healthy meal makeover.
The Moms lay out a 5-Step Meal Makeover Plan, explaining how to market good nutrition to kids, establish food rules, and make life easier in the kitchen.
In The Best of the Bunch chapter they reveal which brands of kid convenience foods–hot dogs, frozen pizza, and more–are the best tasting and most nutritious ones out there.
The Moms show how to stock a healthy pantry and whip up delicious anytime meals using pantry staples.
They even serve up 120 reworked recipes for family favorites such as Fast-as-Boxed Macaroni & Cheese, Squishy Squash Lasagna, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sweet Potato Fries, and Chocolate Pudding with Toppers.

Editorial Review:

First came A Man, a Can, a Plan: 50 Great Guy Meals Even You Can Make. The Sunday Star-Ledger cheered it as a "foolproof, not to mention spill-proof guide to manly success in the kitchen." And the Detroit News exclaimed, "Dude, this cookbook is for you."

Next came A Man, a Can, a Grill: 50 No-Sweat Meals You Can Fire Up Fast. Cookbook author Andrew Schloss, who wrote Cooking with Three Ingredients and Dinner's Ready, called the recipes "easy, flavorful...streamlined and smart. Real food-so good that no one will ever guess your secret is in the can."

Now there's A Man, a Can, a Microwave-and all those "dudes" who helped put the "Grill" book on the New York Times how-to bestseller list will be pleased to know that David Joachim and the editors of Men's Health haven't lost a beat. The 50 guy-friendly, nuke-able meals using packaged ingredients are fun to make and great to eat-and include such tasty dishes as "Italian One-Dish Fish," "Teriyaki Beef with Broccoli," and "Painless Paella." With step-by-step recipes and full-color photos, A Man, a Can, a Microwave, like the previous books in the series, is a perfect gift for anyone learning to cope in the kitchen. Make sure he has a can opener-and a hearty appetite!

Sahni's microwave magic creates real Indian food 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Don't disdain this marvelous book. Julie Sahni teaches you how to cook Indian food in the microwave, with flair and flavor. In the process, you learn things about microwave cooking you never knew. The microwave really can make "real" food, and Julie Sahni shows you how. The recipes need the quantity of spices increased in some cases, but this book is an endless delight and resource. Wonderful for summer months when you crave the flavor of that luscious curry but want to beat the heat in the kitchen, or just for any time when speed and ease seem the way to go! I love this book. I own over 30 Indian cookbooks, but I return to this often.

"Moghul Microwave" is a wonderful book... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the first time I've ever read a cook-book that actually gives you real step-by-step recipies that work really well. The directions are obvious, even for a initiate like myself, and at least 95% of the ingredients are the off-the-shelf variety. I also love the way Julie Sahni "narrates" her recipies, giving me just enough outside information to add some depth to the dish, and yet not so much as to detract from the recipies themselves. What else can I say except that my copy is used almost every weekend, and it's already dog-eared and well worn. I just hope she comes out with a follow-on at some point...

Really a great help 4 out of 5 stars.

As an elderly gentleman who lives by himself in a condo I found this book very helpful in planning my daily meals.
Since owning this book my microwave does more than just heat up left overs. And this was essentially the purpose of this purchase.

Microwave Cooking for One by Marie T. Smith 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book has not been updated for the new microwave ovens of today. Although the recipes are satisfactory the cooking times can't be used. The food would be cooked into a brick. Needless to say, this book should be rewritten.

Just a little dated. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The recipes are certainly easy enough. But with all the emphasis on precision--a few seconds either way can spoil a dish--its a shame that none of the three basic, recommended Corningware utensils are currently available. I'm sure something can be substituted but we're not off to a good start, here.

microwave cooking for one 5 out of 5 stars.

excellent book. I decided to start eating better and this has helped my limited cooking skills greatly.

Bon appetit! 5 out of 5 stars.

Marie Smith's groundbreaking cookbook will surely win the heart of many a white supremacist, serial killer or secret Al Qaeda cell member too stupid to realize there's a whole grocery section of meals that are a) microwave-ready and b) portioned for one, and only one, psychotic loner.

Editorial Review:

Microwave ovens are in over 90% of American homes--but too often relegated to the role of re-heater, defroster, and popcorn maker. No more. Victoria Wise and Susanna Hoffman, authors of The Well-Filled Tortilla with over 200,000 copies in print, spent three years exploring the possibilities of the microwave, and they've created a collection of 350 innovative, flavorful, at times whimsical recipes that take full advantage of the box and what it does best. And what the microwave does best, as the authors have discovered, is pretty terrific. Perfectly cooked fish. Creamy no-stir risottos. Luscious sauces for pasta. Crunchy pickles and relishes in a twinkling. Soup with an unexpected depth of flavor. Hasty puddings. And all without much of the time, mess, fuss, and demanding attention of conventional cooking. Then, marry these virtues with the sensibilities of two truly imaginative chefs, and the box really does become magic: Cuba Seafood Soup with Black Beans, Sweet Potato and Yam, Burmese Curried Chicken, Fish Filets Brazilian, Tahini Spice Cake with Orange Glaze, Double Chocolate Pudding. 43,000 copies in print.

It's not a cookbook, it's an instruction manual! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The description of this book did not indicate it was relating solely to a specialized, microwavable device. (There was a picture of the "missing" item on the cover, but no words.) We bought the book as a gift - but not the device - and as such the recipient was somewhat put out. He thought the book was ancillary to the device! Needless to say that we were embarassed.

Easy, Innovative, and Beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

The recipes in this book are all cooked in a cute microwave pot. I have found all of the food really simple to make, with few ingredients and cooking times of only a few minutes. You can treat the recipes like tapas dishes and make a varied meal by putting a few of them together. What I love most is that veggies retain their color and nutrition, and are much more flavorful than steaming or boiling on the stove. It's also amazing to find a book and device that can cook meat and fish deliciously in the microwave!!! Lastly, and so helpful is that almost all of the recipes have beautiful full page photos. As mentioned in the Oprah write up, the Cook-Zen pot can be bought online at www.korin.com. Like the other reviewer, I am giving the books and pots as Christmas gifts, especially to my niece for cooking in her college dorm.

Editorial Review:

The Cook-Zen pot is a microwave-cooking innovation that creates amazingly delicious, healthy meals in minutes. This companion cookbook presents more than 80 recipes for Japanese-style veggies, rice dishes, meat, chicken, fish, even desserts, all simplified for home cooks. The Cook-Zen delivers perfectly cooked sushi rice and crisp vegetables every time.

A bit foreign for US cooks 2 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a general guide to some easy, quick microwave recipes. What I got was a book that is a bit more European than I can use. The recipes are not geared toward an American palate. Some would see this as an advantage, but I didn't find it "the only" microwave book I'd ever need. It calls for obscure(to me anyway)ingredients, many I don't recognise. I think of myself as a somewhat adventurous cook but most of these recipes do not appeal to me at all. A waste of my money.

You don't need another microwave cooking book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the A to Z of microwave cooking. Form starters & soups to Sauces, pickles, desserts and ofcourse main dishes. The recipes are well explained and easy to read. It also has a good collection of microwave tips. If I had known about that earlier, I would not have bought another book on microwave cooking tips :-( Pick this up..Its a steal !

Fancy recipes 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Well the book does teach you how to cook everything in the microwave but the reason I wanted to cook in the microwave is to make fast and very simple meals...I wanted easy recipes not recipes with lots of crazy ingredients. If you want to cook gourmet meals with fresh herbs in the microwave then this book is for you but if you want something simple then pick another book.
