Not a Microwave Book 2 out of 5 stars.

This is not a microwave cookbook. I don't know why it is in this section. Waste of money since I only have a microwave.

perfect gift for non-cookers 5 out of 5 stars.

For those of us too busy to cook (or learn how to cook) on a regular basis, this is the perfect solution when you want a homecooked meal with little effort. As a college student, I find this book is the perfect blend of not-too-expensive groceries and good cooking.

Quick and Easy! 5 out of 5 stars.

Love this cookbook! I have had one for years and purchased this as a gift for a friend with four small children and not a lot of time to make dinner! We both love it! It is quick and easy, just like title says. Most of the ingredients are what you would have stocked in your pantry anyway.

Mediocre For Quick Recipes 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was not bad for quick recipe ideas. However, please note:

If you are looking for recipes with meat full of flavor, this is NOT the book for you. The meat will not be flavorful. This cookbook basically combines ingredients and one can of your favorite Campbell's soup. In the end, the result will be mediocre gravy over a bland piece of chicken/meat.

On the plus side, since you are using canned soup, you could replace regular soup with low salt/fat soup, which would be very healthy. However, you would be compromising more of the flavor, which I would not suggest.

So, if you are looking for a quick dinner and are not too concerned with flavor, this would be fine.

A pretty good Microwave cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be easy to follow and really quite simple. Preparations are easy, as the title indicates, and the results are quite impressive.

Great variety to a quick way to cook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has a surprising range of recipes and opens your mind to the potential of how to handle all levels of food preparation at every stage using a microwave as an aid. For example, I never prepared chocolate covered strawberries previously and they are delightfully easy using the microwave to heat the chocolate without burning it.

It helps enormously in understanding how to use a microwave of any watt power without overcooking the food, to using it for shortening conventional cooking by making it easy to incorporate both methods most effectively.

The variety of recipes makes it possible to only use the microwave cooking an entire meal from something substantial to snacks but practically speaking, no one method is used by any cook.

This is a great resource for those times when you feel using a microwave to quickly prepare food is the most practical and still serve something delicious, keeping in mind that every type of cooking method brings a difference in flavors melding into something unique to have a creative cooking experience.

TEACHER FAVORITE COOKBOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've used Messipeis and the easy-to-read directions in my classroom. The students love everything from the title on (Great word work) You only need a microwave and the ingredients are common and to kids taste! Useful and simple safety tips, measurement guides, and the book can be whiped off in case of the ocational spill. A MUST HAVE IF YOU EVER DREAMED OF COOKING IN THE CLASSROOM! State tests do test for functional reading skills!! Teaching has never been so fun!

Editorial Review:

Messipes is a good way to start children off in the kitchen. This sandwich-shaped, plastic-coated "book" gives recipes for kid-friendly dishes like English Muffin Pizza, Stuffed Potato Boats, fruit salad, and a simple macaroni and cheese. Most cooking is done in the microwave oven. The first pages of this book explain safety rules for the kitchen. Recipes make one or two servings, so the amount of food handled is child-sized. Colorful pictures show the ingredients, equipment, and steps for making every recipe. The instructions are written to help children understand what to do; for example, raw vegetables are "cut into long strips" to go with a dip while onion for the dip is chopped into "tiny pieces." Be prepared, though, to explain how to grate cheese, core an apple, and scoop out half of a baked potato.

Best Reference & Conversion Guide to move from Traditional Cooking Methods to Microwave 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've owned a copy of this book since I bought my first microwave back in the dark ages when microwave ovens were New Fangled Contraptions. I just bought 2 more for young adults in our family who beginning their own households.

Whether you're a cooking novice or an experienced traditional cook looking for ways to use that counter-hogging microwave, this is the book for you. The New G. E. Microwave Cookbook teaches technique along with providing a huge variety of basic recipes. It gives charts for microwaving just about anything you'd care to cook short of elephant and whole giant squid. Yeah, that's an exageration, but it **is** a good basic microwave cookbook.

Every page is liberally illustrated with color photographs so you can seeee how to apply the techniques the book teaches. The authors give 13 deatailed pages to microwaving by food types, defrosting and reheating charts. It devotes almost another 40 pages to "Microwave Adapting Guides" before the microwave recipes' sections. TAll told, there are over 200 pages of detailed, practical and useful information.

The copyright was almost a quarter century ago, yet this book is still the most informative I've found for microwave cookery. For microwaves with high wattages, the charts and guidelines still stand as rules of thumb. Just ease the time back a notch and you're ready to go. With this book and a few microwave cooking containers you could really do without a conventional oven in your kitchen.

Heavy on the pictures 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The pictures are the highlight of Basic Microwaving. All are full color and they cover every page. This leads to a major drawback: despite being long in pages there is not so much content here. There is an average of less than one recipe per page. So even though this is a long microwave cookbook it has fewer recipes than do more compact options.

So there aren't as many recipes here as you would expect. Brace yourself... there are even fewer. This is because many of these recipes involve using specialized equipment. One of these specialty items it a hotplate that you heat up in the microwave and then cook on top of, like a stove top. Recipes that involve this may as well be recipes written for a stovetop, since the food never goes into the microwave. Also many of the recipes involve wrapping aluminum foil around portions of the food to even out the cooking through the food. I'm not sticking aluminum in my microwave so those are out.

A major lack in this book is that there are no cooking charts. Want to know how to cook an acorn squash in the microwave? You are out of luck. Most foods that I look up in the index are not to be found, so this book makes a poor reference. Most microwave cookbooks will have a section in them somewhere that gives a table of foods and cooking time as well as very brief notes on preparation. This book doesn't, so without another microwave cookbook you will not be able to adapt the recipes to different ingredients (unless you are using another microwave cookbook in conjunction with this one).

Recipes that I have tried from this book turn out well, with the exception of breads that rise from yeast (breads that rise from baking soda were excellent and it does have seven different bread recipes). So if you just want a book to try a recipe from now and then, then this one will be reliable.

I don't recommend this cookbook unless you want it for a specific recipe that you know is in here. Recipes turn out well and have good taste and texture. The pictures are pretty but compete with content so that you only get about one recipe per page - not many recipes. Also many of these recipes require specialized utensils that you are unlikely to have. There is more fluff than content here even though the content is good.
