cute but disappointing 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I think the black and white episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are probably the best examples of American TV ever made, so I was thrilled to order this book. There are no photos at all which makes it tedious to flip through. Also, every recipe insists on having a character's name in the title. It's cute for the first few pages but gets tiresome very quickly. I can't imagine Ernest T. Bass cooking anything and if he did I don't believe I would want to try it. However, there are many, many pieces of dialogue reproduced exactly as they were said on the show and it is delightful to read them! How funny simple American dialect can be... This book is a fun momento of the classic Americana sitcom, but don't expect to cook much from it.

A waste of my money 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book from amazon last year and was very let down. First of all, the quality is poor- the pages are very thin- it looks like cheap copy paper printed at a corner shop (the print quality is not great), especially with the cheap plastic ring binders.

This book is not an official recipe book filled with actual recipes used on the show. It's not even all Southern cooking since some of the recipes are not even from the south. Many sounded very unappetizing. Too many recipes called for canned soups and other ready made items as opposed to being made from scratch. I didn't see many recipes that looked like it would produce what Aunt Bee served on TV. I agree with the reviewer who said that using character names for the recipes got very old.

I gave my book to Goodwill.

Contains more than 300 recipes served by Aunt Bee and others on The Andy Griffith Show. Includes wonderful, rare photos from the show and interesting sidebars. Illustrated and indexed.

good, to an extent... 3 out of 5 stars.

but unfortunately, most of the cheeses I tried to look up were not among the more than 300 described here. I gave this to my brother as a gift and we took it along to the local Central Market in Dallas. Most of the cheeses we were interested in couldn't be found in the book. Recommended, but with reservations - the descriptions of the cheeses that are actually in the book are truly mouth-watering.

SURPRISE confert to coffee 5 out of 5 stars.

I WAS a TEA drinker! until I read this book. It was ordered BY MISTAKE in order to qualify for free shipping (thought it was a cup warmer!). I was so annoyed and was about to send it back but - READ it anyway and once started was so intriqued and hankering for real coffee I could smell the aroma right out of the book.
If an author can do that to an avowed tea drinker, and make you run out and buy the best coffee beans and grind them and pour boiling water over the grounds in a strainer with coffee filter until buying a coffee machine when convinced... and DRINK the stuff that does NOT taste like tea but something AMAZING - wow! and bow wow!

Buy this book - whatever you drink now. Read not only all the directions from buying to brewing to drinking, then the history culture and everything connected to Coffee - you're getting the full scope from a first class story teller. (I think I'll go back and read it again, and brew some coffee!)

The coffee bible, a definitive guide for both casual coffee drinkers and connoisseurs.

Tips and Techniques to Boost Basic Cooking Skills. 4 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

"The Food Lover's Tiptionary" is a collection of tips and techniques on basic culinary subjects, organized alphabetically. I believe there are about 500 separate entries, but the book doesn't say. The 6,000 tips referred to on the book's cover fall under the entries. The book covers specific foods, general food categories, kitchen utensils, and culinary techniques. Food entries are presented in the following format: Tidbit (either a definition or food trivia), Purchasing, Equivalents, Storing, Preparing, Cooking, and/or Using. Some of the food entries are accompanied by short recipes. The formats of other types of entries vary, and may be best described by example: The entry for "Cookies" provides extensive instructions on making dough, preparing pans, baking, finishing, and storing. "Ice" gives general information and instructions for various ice cubes for different occasions. "Baked Goods" includes general baking tips. "Pasta Shapes" describes 65 shapes. Food quotes by recognizable names are scattered throughout the book, wherever the subject of the quote is found. There are several charts in the book, such as metric conversion, oven temperature equivalents, and pan sizes. And there is a Recipe Index in the back, for the over 100 short recipes found throughout the book.

Every cook could learn something from the "Tiptionary", but I think beginning or moderately experienced cooks will find it most useful. The subjects, themselves, are pretty basic. "Gourmet" subjects are few, and ethnic foods not at all. The entries are thorough, though, and would be helpful to an experienced chef if he/she doesn't happen to have experience with a particular food that is included. The emphasis is on instruction in "The Food Lover's Tiptionary", whereas the author's popular "Food Lover's Companion" emphasizes definitions. The "Food Lover's Companion" describes nearly 6,000 culinary terms -ethnic, gourmet, and obscure included.

Editorial Review:

Both experienced and novice cooks will love this A-to-Z guide packed with more than 6,000 tips, shortcuts and other culinary wisdom cookbooks never tell you. Find all the answers you'll ever need to a universe of cooking quandaries and questions on hundreds of subjects, including foods, beverages, kitchen equipment, cooking techniques, entertaining ideas and smart ways to use leftovers. Plus, there are loads of quick and easy reference charts, a handy system of cross-referencing and well over a hundred shorthand-style recipes.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 24 people found this review helpful.

As a newcomer to macrobiotics, I absolutely loved this book and have used it every day since I bought it. It outlines easy, quick basic recipes that anyone can make - most of which involve few basic ingredients.

Everything down to how to make basic brown rice is in here. I am so blessed I happened to get this book in the beginning. After now having read some of the other macrobiotic books, I realize I might have been frustrated by the foreign ingredients and complicated recipes and been turned off from macrobiotics otherwise.

One thing I did when I bought this book (as I was just slowly learning macro foods and starting to introduce them to my cupboards) is sift through the book and start noting common themes of ingredients. After identifying and buying some of the "base" products identified, I was able to make several different recipes. These recipes make up my diet today and every day.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially beginners like me.

Editorial Review:

Wholesome and delicious recipes for cooking in harmony with nature.

Rooted in centuries-old principles, the macrobiotic diet consists of simple yet highly nutritious foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and beans, selected and prepared in harmony with the seasons. From lightly sautéed spring greens and refreshing summer salads, to harvest vegetables and hearty winter stews, this cookbook provides hundreds of easy-to-follow and flavorful recipes for complete and balanced macrobiotic meals. A combination of great taste and whole foods, this is traditional macrobiotic cooking at its best.

I used to have a side business selling cookies and have made more varieties of cookies than anyone I know. This is hands down my favorite cookie book. The pictures are beautiful, the organization is thoughtful, and the recipes are scrumptious and spot-on. My favorite cookie of all time is the monster fudge nut cookie featured here. Every time I have made it, people gush over how wonderful it is. I strongly recommend this book.
