GORDON & OTHER SIX LETTER WORDS. 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 25 people found this review helpful.

OF HIS MANY COOK BOOKS PASSION FOR FLAVOR IS NOT HIS BEST - HOWEVER IN SAYING THAT, HIS SELECTION
OF RECIPES IS MORE OBSCURE THAN CLASSIC - ON TURNING EACH PAGE YOU HOPE TO RUN ACCROSS A DISH
YOU CAN'T WAIT TO COOK INSTEAD THE PAGES KEEP TURNING WTH NO REAL EXCITEMENT OR TITILATION.

HIS REAL GIFT TO THE READER IS HOW TO DEVELOP SKILLS IN PRODUCING THE BASIC GROUNDWORK ON WICH
TO BUILD FLAVOR IF YOU DIDN'T ALLREADY KNOW HOW TO MAKE A TOMATO CONCASSE OR CREME PATISSERIE
THIS BOOK IS INVALUABLE - MUCH OF THE INGREDIENTS FOR SOME OF HIS DISHES WILL BE HARD IF NOT
IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN THE STATES - IE; RED MULLET - BRILL - GOOSE FAT - PARTRIDGE ETC IF YOU CAN FIND
THEM EXPECT TO PAY HANDSOMLY - NEARLY EVERY RECIPE INVOLVES LARGE QUANTITIES OF EXPENSIVE GOODIES.
MY FIRST SHOT AT ONE OF BIG BOYS RECIPES WAS HIS RABBIT/CABBAGE/CEPES TERRINE - IT COST A SMALL
FORTUNE - TOOK HOURS TO MAKE BUT SURPRISINGLY IT TURNED OUT GREAT.
SO RAMSAY FANS GIRD UP YOUR LOINS FOR THIS BOOK BUT REMEMBER DON'T GO INTO ESCROW PAYING
FOR THE INGREDIENTS.
BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY AS CAN BE EXPECTED - BUT IN MY OPINION I COULD OF DONE WITH SOME MORE EXCITING AND LESS EXPENSIVE RECIPE SELECTIONS - A BOOK YOU WOULD USE TWICE A WEEK INSTEAD OF
ONCE A MONTH.
ON A SCALE OF ONE TO TEN - PASSION FOR FLAVOUR WOULD BE A FIVE TO SIX

Editorial Review:

Look at the images, read the recipes, and just imagine their incredible, mouthwatering taste. These 100 dishes from hot chef Gordon Ramsay radiate an ethereal lightness and outstanding intensity of flavor. Using only the freshest ingredients, minimal butter, and the cleanest, deepest stocks as a base, he conjures up sublime food that never fails to excite the palate. Best of all, Ramsay has adapted many of his most renowned recipes for the domestic kitchen—including Cappuccino of Roasted Langoustine and Lentils, Tortellini of Ratatouille with Sauce Gazpacho, and Crème Brulée with Roasted Rhubarb. All the essential techniques are beautifully explained, and the on-the-page menu includes soups, starters, pastas and risottos, vegetables, fish and seafood, meat, game and poultry, desserts, and ice creams and sorbets.

Disappointed - Way too sweet and artificial 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The book is nicely laid out, but I was disappointed in the actual recipes. I had purchased a similar book at my local grocery store, which contains recipes for teas and other mixes that call for real tea leaves, unsweetened cocoa, lots of spices and other natural ingredients, and in a couple cases, a bit of sugar. I assumed this book was similar. So based on the rave reviews by other Amazon customers, I bought this book.

The book arrived today and I am very disappointed. Every recipe in the "Gift in a Jar: Cocoas, Cappuccinos, Coffees and Teas" book uses some combination of instant powdered tea, instant coffee, powdered lemonade mix, instant chocolate mix, flavored powdered gelatin, powdered creamer, powdered milk, powdered orange drink mix and lots of sugar. And when you consider that some of the instant powdered ingredients I listed above contain sugar, many of these mixes are basically half sugar! Some recipes call for spices; the rest rely on artifical flavoring, such as red hot candies, imitation coconut extract and flavored gelatin.

While I enjoy a good cup of flavored tea and the occasional indulgence of cocoa, I do not want my beverage to be half sugar and made with lots of artificial flavorings and powdery ingredients. I'm glad I have the "grocery store" book even though it contains only a handful of beverage recipes.

I should mention that I bought the "Soup" edition in the "Gifts in a Jar" series at the same time as this drink edition and am looking forward to testing out the recipes.

Editorial Review:

This book is filled with recipes to make your own gifts. Each mix fits into a quart jar. The book even includes tags complete with recipient directions with each recipe. Just cut it out, personalize and attach to the jar. Fun to make and affordable, gifts in a jar make great gifts for neighbors, teachers and friends!

Editorial Review:

One of the most influential painters of modern times, Claude Monet lived for half his life in the famous house at Giverny. It was after moving here in 1883 with his future second wife, Alice Hoschedé, and their eight children that Monet's work finally achieved recognition. His growing success meant that he was able to indulge his passion for comfort and good living. Family meals, special celebrations, luncheons with friends, picnics: all reflected the Monets' love of good food. Just as the inspiration for many of Monet's paintings was drawn from his beloved gardens and the surrounding Normandy landscape, so the meals served at Giverny were based upon superb ingredients from the kitchen-garden (a work of art in itself), the farmyard, and the French countryside. A moody, reserved, and very private man whose daily routine revolved totally around his painting, Monet nevertheless enjoyed entertaining his friends, many of whom were leading figures of the time. As well as his fellow Impressionists -- in particular Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas and Cezanne -- other regular guests included Rodin, Whistler, Maupassant, Valery, and one of Monet's closest friends, the statesman Clemenceau. They came to dine in almost ritual form, first visiting Monet's studio and the greenhouses, then having lunch at 11:30 (the time the family always dined, to enable Monet to make the most of the afternoon light). Tea would later be served under the lime trees or near the pond. Guests were never invited to dinner; because Monet went to bed very early in order to rise at dawn. All the guests were familiar with Monet's rigid timetable. The recipes collected in his cooking journals includedishes Monet had encountered in his travels or had come across in restaurants he frequented in Paris as well as recipes from friends, such as Cezanne's "bouillabaisse" and Millet's "petits pains." For this book, the author Claire Joyes, wife of Madame Monet's great-grandson, has spent years selecting the Monets' favorite recipes and writing a wonderfully evocative introductory text. All of the recipes have been artfully prepared and brought back to life in Monet's own kitchen by master chef Joel Robuchon. Illustrated with sumptuous reproductions of Monet's paintings, spectacular original four-color photographs of Giverny, selected shots of finished dishes, and facsimile pages from the notebooks themselves, this book provides a fascinating and unique insight into the turn-of-the-century lifestyle of one of the world's most celebrated Impressionist painters.

Editorial Review:

If you’ve ever had genuine farmhouse Cheddar from England, or real Alsatian Munster, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, you know that fine hand-crafted cheeses have absolutely nothing to do with the bland, shrink-wrapped, food-colored offerings that evoke school cafeterias. Artisanal cheeses—from luscious triple crèmes to the “boss” blues—are complex and richly rewarding, very similar to fine wines. And these cheeses get even more rewarding if you know something about their subtleties, their attributes, and how to get the most out of them—like which wines go with which cheeses (and why), or how a multiple-cheese tasting should progress, or what an appropriate portion size is, or which accompaniments work best, or why the Loire chèvres peak in autumn.

Max McCalman is one of the world’s foremost experts on these matters. As the maître fromager (or “cheese master”) at the acclaimed restaurants Picholine and Artisanal in New York City, he spends his entire day, every day, dealing with cheese—ordering it, tasting it, studying it, serving it. And The Cheese Plate is the culmination of his years of passion and study for this subject: the definitive work on how to enjoy the world’s greatest cheeses (and what those cheeses are) at home.

The Cheese Plate begins with the fundamentals: history, what exactly cheese is, and how it’s made. Then Max moves onto the subject that has made him a star in the culinary world—the art of cheese tasting. To begin with, it’s important to know how to buy, store, and serve cheeses, and then how to taste them (again, as with wines, the best results come with a little finesse). Then you’ll want to pair cheeses with other foods and beverages, especially wines, to bring out the best of both. And with all this expertise in hand, you’ll want to construct cheese plates, from a quick lunch assortment to a full after-dinner tasting extravaganza. Finally, you’ll appreciate a rundown of the best cheeses in the world—where they’re from, what they look and taste like, their perfect wine accompaniments—so that you can become a maître fromager in your own right.

Honest ingredients and excellent results 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I bought this book in the French Quarter on our honeymoon in 1976, and in spite of the care I've taken to protect it, it is now in tatters from all the use. Every recipe I've tried is wonderful, and many are standard fare now. For example, the Dutch Baby is a Sunday morning favorite, and Lemon Loves always get gobbled up first when taken to a summer party.

The amazing ladies and gentlemen who submitted the recipes use real ingredients for authentic results, and I'm thankful for the chance to get a new copy of this Southern classic.

A treasure! 5 out of 5 stars.

Someone gave us this book as a gift about 10 years ago and we use it for every holiday as it reminds us of our southern roots and holidays at my grandmother's. If you are a southern cook or love southern cooking, you can't go wrong with this one. I am living out of the country for a year and this is the one cookbook I want to have with me. The desserts are especially scrumptious!

The BEST! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a native Louisianian and believe this is, by far, the best cookbook available. It is beautifully written and illustrated.

Wrong Book 4 out of 5 stars.

I ordered the book that is associated with this review. However, when the book arrived, it had a different cover and didn't have the same recipes as I'd anticipated. I had originally checked the book out from my local library prior to deciding on purchasing it. Although the format is the same, I am somewhat disappointed that I didn't receive what I'd actually ordered. I didn't send it back due to the book container other good recipes.

Very helpful 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book years ago and while I would have liked to have had a wider variety of menus, I found this book very useful. We added our own personalized touch to several of these recipes. We also incorporated some of our own favorites such as hamburger and fries, or spaghetti into the menu plan. The shopping list can be a little tricky to navigate because we always opt to buy spaghetti sauce, not make it from scratch but we were able to adapt the shopping list to our own and if we forgot to pick something up from the store, we improvised. Mainly, this book got us to redefine our approach to grocery shopping. We had to retrain our shopping/cooking process but it was worth the effort. We cook for two weeks and because we add in our other favorite dishes, it really helps us out alot. Cooking day is an all day affair for us but it pays off because we don't order take out as much.

Review from an experienced potter 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I am thrilled with this new book I recently purchased, I have had Emmanual Cooper's other books on glazing and recipes - and found them most informative and the glazes pretty true to explanation
I also have found that they are quite stable - we fire in the higher 1260.C upwards catagory and the sometimes glaze recipes unless worked out correctly can be very unstable and uninteresting.
All in all a very worthwhile book and easy to use, a definate "MUST HAVE" for your collection

A fine vegan cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Some of the concepts and preparation methods are dated (you can't home-can in tin cans any more - I don't think) but I have tried some of the recipes, and they taste MUCH better than they look and since they have no animal products, they take a long time to go stale.

For me, the main obstacle in trying the main dishes is the extremely long cooking times - as long as 6 hours, and using a Crock-Pot probably won't work. As for breads and side dishes, no problem.

Recipies are as easy as they are delicious! 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I found many amazing Fondue recipes in this book. My favorites are the Classic Fondue (always a hit); the Dill Fondue and the Toblerone Fondue. I throw a big fondue party every year, featuring four types of cheese fondue and two dessert fondues. The recipes in this book have never let me down. They are delicious and easy to prepare. This book is highly recommended.

Broad treatment of fondue pot use 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I grew up thinking that fondues were just cheese, cheese, cheese, so I leapt at a book that would broaden my understanding. This is exactly that I got in this book. Coverage of various styles may not be deep, but the authors present a sampling of an enormous range of fondue pot uses from various cuisines around the world.

A small nit to pick is that the text is somewhat clumsily translated from German, and it pays to read the recipe instructions carefully prior to starting. The instructions are not particularly well segmented and laid out for you to read as you go. Nevertheless, for the one and only fondue cookbook in my collection, this was a great pick.

Editorial Review:

Nearly 200 recipes for fish, cheese and meat fondues, oriental hot pots, tempura, sukiyaki, and dessert fondues. Advice on accompanying wines and bread recipes are also given.

My husband and I lost a total of 100 pounds in 5 months by using the delicious recipes in this book. The food is tasty, easy to prepare, and satisfying. The variety of foods from the traditional to the more exotic or ethnic gives the range of choice often missing in "diet" books. I have purchased this book as a gift for several friends who have also found it enjoyable.

THIS IS THE BEST "diet" COOKBOOK EVER! 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved the pictures! I own alot of cookbooks, and this one has fast become my favorite. I liked the Classics section as well as the easy-to-understand calorie needs/bmi explanation in the front of the book and the 14-day menu planner. It contains good old fashioned dinners as well as easy gourmet-type delights. My husband is excited about this too! My whole family will enjoy losing weight while eating great tasting food without feeling they are on a diet!
