Simple and easy but not always correct 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For the really simple things, obviously you can't go wrong and though I have not used this book extensively, it seems some of the recipes are off.
For example the 3 colored dango gave me measurements that were pretty different than other recipes I found online. Also on how to cook the rice I was told that recipe was off too, therefore the results I got were far less than desired.
I've lost faith in this book and though it was fun at first, I most likely will not use it again.
There are some great sites online of bloggers with great recipes like justhungry.com and others.
I know there are much better books out there on cooking simple Japanese foods..
For fun and very simple things, this is a cute book, but nothing more, for me anyway.

Excellent crepe overview 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I opened the book, and made excellent crepes right away, within minutes. Can't do much better than that!

Just what I was looking for... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I took a crepe making class just to learn the technique and take the fear out of crepe making. While I took away from that class a few recipes, none were interesting enough to make at home. This book is wonderful--what closed the deal on purchasing it was when I saw that it included a recipe for blue corn crepes. While vacationing in Santa Fe, I fell in love with their blue corn pancake/muffin mix. I can't wait to make the blue corn crepes with the blue corn mix I brought back to Houston. The recipes in this book are exactly what I was looking for--diverse and simple to follow.

Love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I originally found this book at a library, but after checking it out over and over again -as I love it, I checked on Amazon and it was here!! Love it! It has such a wonderful variety of crepes, using different flours etc., sweet and savory, and so many tips and ideas. I share this book title with everyone at my cooking shows. Definitely worth the price and then some!

Editorial Review:

Hailed as the most architecturally significant private residence in the United States, Fallingwater was a welcome retreat for Edgar J. Kaufmann, his wife Liliane, their son, Edgar jr., and their many guests. The Fallingwater Cookbook captures the experience of fine and casual dining at this famed home. Suzanne Martinson, former food editor and writer for the Pittsburgh Press and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, relates recipes from Elsie Henderson, the longtime and last cook for the Kaufmann family at Fallingwater, along with Henderson's memories and anecdotes of life in the renowned house on the waterfall. Henderson's encounters with the Kaufmanns, John Heinz, Senator Ted Kennedy, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others, are recounted with humor, affection, and surprising detail.
The book is rounded out with additional recipes from chef Robert Sendall, who began producing special events at Fallingwater in the early 1990s, Jane Citron, with whom Sendall taught cooking classes, and Mary Ann Moreau, former chef of the Fallingwater Café. Artfully composed photographs of food, architecture, landscape, family, and guests complete the collection, which, like Fallingwater, will be treasured for years to come.

Editorial Review:

This indispensable cookbook, an instant classic when first published in 1989, is now back in print with a brand-new introduction from the most celebrated authority on Mexican cooking, Diana Kennedy. The culmination of more than fifty years of living, traveling, and cooking in Mexico, The Art of Mexican Cooking is the ultimate guide to creating authentic Mexican food in your own kitchen, with more than 200 beloved recipes as well as evocative illustrations.

The dishes included, favorites from all the regions of Mexico, range from sophisticated to pure and simple, but they all share an intrinsic depth of taste. Aficionados will go to great lengths to duplicate the authentic dishes (and Kennedy tells them exactly how), but here too is a wealth of less complicated recipes for the casual cook in search of the unmistakable flavors of a bold cuisine.

Kennedy shares the secrets of true Mexican flavor: balancing the piquant taste of chiles with a little salt and acid, for instance, or charring them to round out their flavor; broiling tomatoes to bring out their character, or adding cumin for a light accent. By using Kennedy’s kitchen wisdom and advice, and carefully selecting produce that is now readily available in most American markets, cooks with an appetite for Mexican cuisine–and Kennedy devotees old and new–can at last serve and enjoy real Mexican food.

“This is the ultimate in Mexican cooking from the world’s leading authority.”
—Paula Wolfert, author of The Cooking of South-West France

not a replacement of an owners manual 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book that backs up your owners manual of your pressure cooker. My main concern when I bought my pressure cooker was safety. I figured they were safer than the old models that blew up but I wanted to know why. Also I know that if I understand the basics of this apparatus I could potentially avoid problems since I know it is impossible to idiot proof anything 100%. After reading the book, I able to use the pressure cooker with confidence. I think its main strengths are the basic information it provides on the safety of pressure cookers, how different types of pressure cookers work and cooking times for common ingredients used in pressure cookers, e.g. soups and beans. One reviewer criticized this book for not providing step by step instructions. This is very difficult cause there are different types of pressure cookers. My owners manual is very specific compared to the this book. I would agree with other reviewers that I would not buy this book just for the recipes. I tried the beef stew and chicken cacciatore and I liked both of them. However, I improvised a mexican pozole soup and chile colorado and liked them even more.

A Superb and Spiritually Enriching Choice for Gift Giving 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

My 30 years in journalism include a number of years of food writing and restaurant reviewing for the Detroit Free Press and Knight-Ridder newspapers. Anyone involved in the front lines of food writing knows that, whatever else you present: It's about the recipes, the recipes, the recipes.

So, first and foremost, this is a yummy collection of heart-warming recipes and those terms "yummy" and "heart-warming" characterize nicely the array of foods you'll discover in this gorgeous book: Personally I'm drawn to the very simple version here of Tomato Gruyere Pie, the down-home Creamed Chicken on Cornbread, the easy yet elegant Grilled Asparagus with Blue Cheese, and that Glazed Salmon with Orange Salsa -- mmmm mmmm.

How about you? Hungry yet?

What's unusual about the design of this book is that these generally simplified recipes for foods that are likely to become family favorites are packaged in a large-format hardback book with inspiring photographs and reminders of sacred texts from the Bible -- as well as uplifting words from other sages and literary lights.

In other words, this book earns an "A" for the recipes themselves. But it's really intended as an inspirational invitation to cooking and to gathering a household around you to enjoy these foods, not only for their great taste but also because the very act of cooking and eating together becomes a spiritual oasis.

The biblical texts come from the Hebrew scriptures as well as the New Testament. This is a Thomas Nelson book, so there really isn't an interfaith diversity of sacred texts here. This is primarily a book aimed at Christian readers. Nevertheless, the words of sacred wisdom do come from various sources and the basic spiritual principle of meals as a spiritual resource is universal.

Many people will enjoy owning the book or giving it as a gift. Even if you don't have a large household yourself, I can envision many of these fairly easy yet delightful recipes to wind up as mainstays at gatherings of friends, potlucks and other shared meals.

Editorial Review:

Come to the Table is a celebration of food and fellowship as a tribute to the blessings of God through stunning photographs, inspiring writing, and delicious recipes.

Fellowship with others is one of the greatest gifts of God. Come to the Table celebrates this special time with friends and family with exquisite Southern recipes organized in chapters on parties and picnics, small group dinners, family gatherings, and dinner on the grounds, among others. Each chapter includes inspiring quotes, uplifting introductions, and a perfect combination of landscape and food photography that magnifies the glory of the Lord. Come to the Table gives you a taste of heaven on earth with all types of recipes, including:

  1. Gorganzola and Fig Tartlets
  2. Butter Bean, Corn, and Okra Salad
  3. Spicy Apple Cake with Caramel Icing
  4. Low-Country Shrimp and Sausage Creole
  5. Creamed Chicken on Cornbread
