I received this book for Christmas last year and it's great. I haven't made all of the recipes in it yet, but haven't come across a single bad one so far. The chappal ("hamburger") kebabs, in particular, are easy to make, delicious, and reheat well, making them great to bring to work for lunch. Fabulous book!

This was a gift for my husband for Valentine's Day. He loves to cook. He hasn't made any of the recipes yet, but he has sticky notes in numerous pages to make things! Great book for anyone that likes to cook and easy as well!

Lots of great recipes. I've already made "Tony Roma's Ribs" twice. The recipe includes how to make the BBQ sauce, as well as the preparation methods. They were just as tender and tasted just as good the ribs that we have eaten at Tony Roma's restaurants.

Can't wait to try a few other recipes!

Editorial Review:

With sixty-five illustrations and a host of restaurant facts, this colorful book provides recipes for more than one hundred dishes like those found in famous and well-known chains, such as Applebee's Quesadillas and T.G.I. Friday's Nine-Layer Dip. Original."

Superb cookbook for a novice who wants to be gourmet 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book in December and just started working with it. Fabulous is all I can say. The recipes are delicious. Abundant photos and instructions guide you on technique and explain the purpose of traditional methods. And the results are wonderful. I've had more fun with this book in the past few weeks than any other cookbook I've ever got.

Editorial Review:

In an era of outfitted home kitchens and food fascination, it's no wonder home cooks who never learned the fundamentals of the kitchen are intimidated. Twenty years ago, James Peterson could relate, and so he taught himself by cooking his way through professional kitchens and stacks of books, logging the lessons of his kitchen education one by one. Now one of the country's most revered cooking teachers, Peterson provides the confidence-building instructions home cooks need to teach themselves to cook consistently with ease and success. COOKING is the only all-in-one instructional that details the techniques that cooks really need to master, teaches all the basic recipes, and includes hundreds of photos that illuminate and inspire.

5 Spices, 50 dishes 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I first checked this out of the library. I renewed it three times and than gave up and bought my own copy. The food is wonderful and she simplifies recipes to a point where even a not very good cook can achieve great results. If you like Indian Food this is a very good basic cook book. You'll be rewarded with good healthy food and you don't have to lay out money to go to an Indian restaurant. And if you've never experienced the wonders of Indian food this is a great introduction. I would recommend cutting down on the amount of cayenne pepper she calls for. I'm a chicken and don't like my food that hot. But if you're a real Indian cooking buff and like it hot got ahead.

Editorial Review:

The premise is simple: with five common spices and a few basic ingredients, home cooks can create fifty mouthwatering Indian dishes, as diverse as they are delicious. Cooking teacher Ruta Kahate has chosen easy-to-find spices coriander, cumin, mustard, cayenne pepper, and turmeric to create authentic, accessible Indian dishes everyone will love. Roasted Lamb with Burnt Onions uses just two spices and three steps resulting in a meltingly tender roast. Steamed Cauliflower with a Spicy Tomato Sauce and Curried Mushrooms and Peas share the same three spices, but each tastes completely different. Suggested menus offer inspiration for entire Indian dinners. For quick and easy Indian meals, keep it simple with 5 Spices, 50 Dishes.

Being Dead Is No Excuse 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did not know what to expect but I laughed all through the book. The recipes look promising although I have not had the opportunity to try one. I have given this book as a gift and recommended it to several friends. You might find it more relevent if you are from the South and are Episcopalian.

Just the recipes alone ... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

are enough to justify this purchase! They're outstanding, and so traditional down south that most folk don't even bother to write them down. But the writing - especially ias it relates to being Methodist or Episcopal, and whether your family falls on one side or the other of the politics in your hometown ... it's all good. Just hilarious! If you grew up in the South, you recognize these people described herein - and if you didn't grown up in the South, well, you'll wish that you had!

Buy it - it's all good!

Love,
granny nita

Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Being from Alabama I know that what she says is absolutely true!

Nostalgia for plantation life?!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Apparently I am the only reader who found parts of this book DEEPLY offensive. The author practically swoons over those fabulously fortunate [white] folks who owned plantations. I think we all know who provided the labor force on said plantations. Thus nostalgia for slavery is pretty much undisguised. I quit reading and returned the book to the library at this point. I'm white, but I hate to think what an African-American would experience reading portions of this "humor" book. I'd give it zero stars or, if it were possible, negative stars.

Editorial Review:

For the first time in a gorgeous hardcover, more of the finest Southern recipes from the Food Network star, whose restaurant has been a Savannah staple for decades

In her first cookbook, Paula H. Deen hardly exhausted all of the best meals from her beloved Georgia restaurant, The Lady & Sons. In a sequel that’s just as delicious and brimming with color photographs, she serves up more of the surefire recipes that have kept customers coming back for more.

In her own life, Paula has turned hardship into hope. Losing both her parents by the age of twenty-three, she was left with two babies and a teenage brother to raise. Later, financial troubles in her marriage made her hide from the world. But surmounting her fear, surviving her divorce, and starting her own business with her sons jump-started her life–and created a favorite eating spot for Savannah natives and tourists alike.

Here are more than 315 of her purely Southern recipes, as simple as they are special: from appetizers, including Polynesian Chicken Wings and Tangy Marinated Shrimp, and such main courses as Brandied Prime Rib and Hurry-Up Chicken Pot Pie to desserts as good as Pecan Pudding Cake and Caramel Apple Cheesecake. And The Lady & Sons, Too! also features a weights-and-measures section and recipes from some of Paula’s friends, including author John Berendt’s mom.

In its gorgeous new edition, The Lady & Sons, Too! is more than an indispensable guide to good eating–it’s a lovely keepsake anyone would be delighted to own.

Editorial Review:

For twenty-five years, Alice Waters and her friends at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California have dedicated themselves to the ideal of serving the finest, freshest foods with simplicity and style. From tender baby asparagus in early spring, to the colorful spectrum of peppers at the height of summer; crisp, leafy chicories in autumn, to sweet butternut squash in the dark of winter, much of the inspiration about what to put on the menu comes from the high quality produce Waters and her chefs seek out year-round.

Using the treasures from the earth, Chez Panisse Vegetables offers endless possibilities for any occasion. Try Grilled Radicchio Risotto with Balsamic Vinegar at your next dinner party, or Pizza with Red and Yellow Peppers for a summer evening at home. Why not forgo green-leaf lettuce, and opt for Artichoke and Grapefruit Salad drizzled with extra-virgin olive oil? Or serve Corn Cakes with fresh berries for breakfast instead of cereal?

Throughout Vegetables, Waters shares her energy and enthusiasm for what she describes as "living foods." When she first began in the restaurant business, the selection of good-quality vegetables was so limited that she found herself searching out farmers with whom she might do business. Luckily, today's explosion of markets and organic farms across the country ensures that any home cook can find freshly harvested produce to put on the table. And with the increased popularity of home gardening, more and more people are taking their vegetables straight from the earth and into the kitchen.

Cooks, gardeners, vegetarians and everyone who appreciates good food will find Chez Panisse Vegetables to be not only a cookbook, but a valuable resource for selecting and serving fine produce. From popular vegetables like corn, tomatoes and carrots, to more unusual selections like chard, amaranth greens and sorrel, Vegetables offers detailed information about the seasonal availability, proper look, flavor and preparation of each selection. Arranged alphabetically by vegetable, and filled with colorful linocut images, Chez Panisse Vegetables makes it easy for a cook to find a tempting recipe for whatever he or she has brought home from the market.
