Not what I expected. . . 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was somewhat disappointed in this book as I was hoping to get more cooked recipes (especially for Korean Beef) and these are cold/raw recipes. It would have been nice if there was more of a description of the contents.

I do admit it has great pictures and might be a good book--just not what I was looking for. . .

Excellent publication for beginning cooks... 5 out of 5 stars.

This whole series of books is so well illustrated and written that anyone can follow them. As a culinary student and personal chef I love the fact that there is a picture of what everything is suppose to look like along the way. If you are wanting to cook and try some authentic tasting Korean cuisine this is a great book to start with. Even my Korean friends from church approved at our last dinner together. I am hoping to collect more in the series. The format and food are both excellent!!!

Great for beginners! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am married to a Korean man and wanted to try to make some of his favorites. This cookbook really does show you step by step how to do things to make it right. Very easy to follow the instructions. The only thing I would like better is if they were to give pictures of what the foreign ingredients look like. Overall a great book.

This book will enable anyone to start cooking Korean cuisine, even beginners.

Editorial Review:

Wine is seen as the natural partner of many great cuisines, but few people associate it with Persian food, one of the world's most sophisticated culinary traditions. The ties, in fact, are age-old. This book weaves together history, poetry, a look at modern viniculture, and a wealth of recipes and wine pairings to celebrate the rightful relationship of wine and food on the Persian table.'Whoever seeks the origins of wine must be crazy', a Persian poet once declared, implying that simple enjoyment of this greatest gift of the grape ought to be enough. Since he wrote those words, however, winemaking has been traced all the way back to the northern uplands of the Fertile Crescent some seven millennia ago, the start of a journey that would take it across the Near East and then into Europe in the dawning years of civilisation. Iran was one of the nurseries of the wine grape, and, as empires rose and fell there, princes, priests, poets and people in ordinary walks of life all embraced wine in various ways. After Islam came to Iran, wine drinking sometimes slipped from public view, but it never disappeared. In this lavishly illustrated book, Najmieh Batmanglij explores that long and eventful history, then shifts her story to California's famed Napa Valley, half a world away. There, in a kind of up-to-the-minute homage to the past, an Iranian-American named Darioush Khaledi uses the latest vinicultural techniques to make superb wines at a winery reminiscent of Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the ancient Persian empire. The final section of the book offers 80 recipes, a guide to Persian hospitality, both old and new, and seasonal menus for various occasions. Grapes play a role in most of the recipes, whether in the form of the fruit, the leaf, the juice, the syrup, unripe grapes or their juice (verjuice), vinegar or wine. Although these recipes are presented for the modern table, they are traditional - based on sources as various as a tenth-century Persian cookbook or the culinary archives of a sixteenth-century Persian court. The book has two special sections. One, written by Dick Davis, a leading authority on Persian literature, discusses the unique links between poetry and wine-drinking in Persian culture. The other, by wine-and-food expert Burke Owens, offers guidelines for pairing wine with the distinctive ingredients used in Persian cooking. He has also provided wine suggestions for each recipe.

Soy: The perfect food :-) 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Last year I purchased The Book of Tofu, by William Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi. Half recipe source-book, half cultural anthropological look at the history of tofu-making in Asia (Did you know that tofu has been eaten in China for thousands of years? Tell that to Newsweek, who listed tofu as a fad that would die out in the new millenium!), it soon convinced me of the importance of soy in the human diet. This book is fabulously researched, has excellent recipes and TONS of interesting information. We learned about more uncommon types of tofu, like Yuba (bean curd skin). (We soon hunted some down at our local asian market, YUM!) We haven't yet attempted to make our own soy milk or tofu, but this book covers these topics in easy to follow, detailed directions. Read this book! Eat Tofu! Be Happy (and healthy)!

No Title 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I received this book from Amazon after reviewing it at a Barnes and Noble because I wanted to know about it before I purchased from Amazon. I am happy with the book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in authentic Indian food. I haven't made my first dish yet but I have marked the dishes that I plan to make based on how simple they are and there are quite a bit of dishes that I chose. I look forward to reaping the rewards of my culinary ability.

Editorial Review:

This unique cookbook takes you on a culinary journey of India -- the land of fragrant spices and savory dishes. Working in collaboration with Raghavan Iyer, a noted Indian culinary expert, Betty Crocker takes the mystery out of Indian cooking while keeping every dish authentic and truly satisfying.

It clearly explains the staples of the Indian kitchen, and offers buying tips as well as substitutions for hard-to-find ingredients.

But this is more than just a cookbook. Fascinating photos and information about Indian traditions, as well as Chef Iyer's own memories of life in India, immerse you in the richness of India's land and culture -- and make this a book to savor.

Very Good Easy Filipino Food - coming from a Filipino 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am always hesitant to believe reviews on filipino cookbooks and recipes because you never know if the person writing the review is filipino which I think alters the comments especially versus a native who grew up with the culture and the food.
I grew up with this stuff and am filipino and I just absolutely love this book! Mine is worn from being used so often. Sadly, I am 2nd generation Filipino American and like many in my generation, many traditions have fallen to the wayside. It was nice to have a book to refer to when my mom and lolas aren't available to tell me their recipe. Very very very easy to use and the recipes are delicious. I wish they had photos of each item though!

Masarap 4 out of 5 stars.

Since my parents moved out of state, I had to fend for myself when it comes to Filipino food. This is like Filipino Cooking for Dummies!

They really are Philippine Recipes Made Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The title really speaks for the book itself. This is a great cookbook with classic, homestyle Philippine recipes that you find to be tested, tried and true. Nothing fancy, no pictures or lengthy dish descriptions, just the basics and sometimes that's all you are looking for.
