More Food that Really Schmecks (and Food that Really Shmecks 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The recipes in More Food that Really Schmecks are interesting, easy, use ingredients that many of us have on hand and above all, yield food that everyone loves. This is one of my "desert island" cookbooks. Among the 400+ in my collection, this is one of the top five! (Likewise Food that Schmecks, the first in the series.) I also love the little stories about Edna's mother and friends. There is a strong influence from old order Mennonites (similar to the Amish in the US.)

More Mennonite cooking that really schmecks! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's great to see that this book has been reissued, as the original has been out of print and copies difficult to find. Like Food that Really Schmecks, More Food that Really Schmecks is a great cookbook filled with many Mennonite inspired recipies that Edna Staebler has gathered from her friends and family, and is complimented by numerous anecdotes about the Waterloo region (and more) of which she is a native. I am not a big cook, but I really enjoy this book, and am greatful that Edna Staebler has done so much to preserve some of Canada's German cooking heritage.

Editorial Review:

Bordered by farms and vineyards, Inn on the Twenty, has the best of Niagara at its doorstep. Anna and Michael Olson's recipes reflect the delights of running a restaurant in one of the world's most idyllic settings. Photographer Michael Mahovlich captures surrounding orchards, vineyards, and the inn itself, on the Twenty Mile Creek, in stunning images. Together, they form a book that brings the sensual feast of Niagara to your table.

The Inn on the Twenty Cookbook contains the building blocks of cooking well, featuring chapters on basics, food and wine pairing, and kitchen tools. It also includes sublime twists on standard dishes, such as Sea Scallops on Apricot Butter Sauce, Lime-Roasted Sweet Potatoes, and Inn on the Twenty's Signature Double Espresso Chocolate Torte. The book's conversational tone will make you feel as though you are cooking alongside the Olsons in their famous winery restaurant in Jordan.

Editorial Review:

A richly illustrated and fascinating portrait from two aficionados of Canadian design, and the first major book to identify and document more than fifty years of contemporary product design in Canada.

From the radical Project G stereo that every well-appointed, Pop-inspired “bachelor pad” had to have, to the wedge-shaped Contempra phone that quickly convinced homeowners to replace their boring black telephones, Canadian design has entered our homes and shaped our lives. Most of us have sat on one of the ubiquitous moulded plywood chairs that furnish every church basement and Legion, or bought a chromed dome kettle, or marvelled at how a garbage can was elevated to the status of a champagne bucket. For the first time, we can look at these products through the eyes of the designers who created them, and celebrate their achievements.

Design in Canada showcases designs that were destined for mass production, and covers everything from popular plastic dishes to refined high-style furniture. The book also features textiles, small appliances and lighting fixtures that have rarely been seen, or, in areas like consumer electronics and ceramics, that have not been as thoroughly documented.

The book also explores the movements and influences that have shaped design in Canada through time: from personal artistic challenges to the global juggernaut of modernism and beyond. Whether exploring post-war materials like plastic or aluminum, or finding ways to capture and tame new technology, Canadian designers have worked with imagination, style and an eye to the global market.

Magnificently illustrated, with extensive appendices providing a “who’s who” in the world of Canadian design, Design in Canada will be welcomed by everyone who shares an interest in design. Whether you are decorating your home, or are a professional or student involved in industrial, interior or architectural design, you will appreciate this comprehensive reference to more than a half-century of Canada’s rich design heritage.

Anna Olson has done a lot within a relatively short media career. I bought this book for my wife. And she has not put it down since.

Great work.

Buy this Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent recipe book of blueberry recipes from the Canadian Maritimes. I prepared about a half dozen of the recipes, and I can tell you they are top notch 5 star type dishes. these are not your typical and precictable recipes. These are the type of dishes you would see at high end restaurants. I purchased about 10 blueberry recipe books from amazon because I have about 30 mature blueberry bushes. I found that the best recipes come from this book and " True Blueberry". They are both worth the money. Try the Blueberry Trifle and the Cobbler made with Maple syrup.

Editorial Review:

Plump blueberries burst with the taste of summer. Blueberries offers an array of delicious blueberry recipes you can enjoy year-round.
Elaine Elliot and Virginia Lee, authors of the tantalizing series of illustrated cookbooks, offer up fresh ideas: Blueberry and Goat Cheese Souflé; Hazelnut, Blueberry and Mango Cobbler; and Peppered Loin of Caribou with Blueberry Cabernet Sauce. The recipes come from chefs in British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario and the three Atlantic Provinces. With beautiful photography of ingredients and the featured dishes, these recipes look as great as they taste -- and anyone can make them. All these recipes have been tested and adapted for home cooking.

Essential cookbook in your collection 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this cookbook about 25 years ago. This book showed me how to make the perfect apple pie using brown sugar. It showed me how to make wonderful popovers and lemon bread which my family loves. My daughters use my well-worn edition for stuffing and sauce recipes. If you only have one cookbook, this should be the one!!!

The Best Cookbook in my Kitchen 5 out of 5 stars.

I was given this cookbook as a wedding gift eighteen years ago. It is worn out! Its a wonderful book for anyone who is Canadian and living elsewhere. The butter tart recipe is fantastic and the cake recipes are excellent. The photography is interesting, as well!

Editorial Review:

Canadian cuisine is recognized the world over as a unique combination of fresh ingredients and a variety of cultural influences tempered by tradition. This third title in the Classic Canadian Cookbook Series highlights the origins of Canada's most beloved recipes, featuring dishes such as Gaspe Tourtiere (a traditional French-Canadian Christmas Eve dish), and Shediac Brown Bread (a molasses-based bread). Known as "the first truly Canadian cookbook," this faithful replica of the 1966 edition is a must for cooks anywhere.

Cooking with Quebec beer is raised to a culinary art in this recipe book featuring soups, appetizers, salads, dressings, and main dishes made with local microbrews (or with easy-to-find American substitute beers also listed). The colorful history of beer-making in Quebec from early Recollet missionaries to contemporary pubs illuminates the distinctive attributes of this region's ales.
