A good cookbook, that a decent cook would be able to successfully make, the tempting recipes. It has some wonderful photos as well.

Editorial Review:

Accompanies the PBS television series.

With imagination and originality, the talented young British chef, Gary Rhodes, presents traditional British cooking in a new light. In these 120 recipes, he demonstrates inventiveness and ingenuity by transforming everyday ingredients into exciting new tastes. Imagine such classics as a steamed fillet of cod brightened with a cilantro butter sauce or a potato and leek terrine enlivened with saffron and olive oil. Learn how to make Green Tomato Tarte Tatin and Rib Steak 'au Poivre' with Sweet Brandy Butter. You'll delight in the fresh and sophisticated tastes and let go of the cliche that British food is bland and uninspired.

A good overview of Scottish cuisine 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I just recently caterered my husband's 30th birthday party with a Scottish theme. I found "A Little Scottish Cookbook" to have well laid out traditional recipes that were easy to prepare. However, after buying a few other cookbooks on the subject at the time, it's pretty standard. If you're looking for the standard bill of fare in Scottish recipes this is it.

A Tiny Little Cookbook that is a Real Five Star Deal 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a delightful little cookbook, just sixty little pages short, but the recipes, at least the three I've done so far, are to die for. You know, anybody can cook, really! All you have to do is faithfully follow a good recipe and voila, if the recipe was good, then your meal will be too. That's usually what I do when I come across something new. Then the second time, if the dish wasn't exactly to my taste, and I'm pretty picky, then I'll mess with it a bit, change it a bit.

Well, I did the Roast Pheasant on page thirty-nine, which hubby Dub loved, as did I and there isn't a thing I'd change about it. I also did the Stovies (stewed potatoes) on page twelve and found them to be perfect. And lastly I made the Anthol Brose Pudding on page fifty-one, which is a whiskey pudding that used to be served as a drink. Dub loved this to death and I think it's going to be a desert staple in our house.

So based on the above, I have to say thing tiny little cookbook is a real five star deal.

The bonny land of Scotland provides abundant fish, fowl, and game to the local chef. For generations these ingredients have been the basis for their classic cuisine, including Scotch Broth, Grouse and Steak Pudding, Roast Venison, and Haggis. A delightful compendium of these and other traditional favorites such as Shortbread and Dundee Cake, A Little Scottish Cookbook is the perfect gift for the experienced Scottish chef or the cook seeking an introduction to this flavorful cuisine. Illustrated throughout with charming watercolor sketches, it will bring a tear to the eye of all Scots in exile.

If you looking for upscale/bistro meals than this is a great book with good recipes, but if your looking for good local pup grub try again. There isn't a steak pie recipe in this book and I've NEVER been in any pub with out it's own pie!!!

Editorial Review:

A revolution has taken place in British cooking and in British pubs over recent years. Some of the most exciting food in Britain is now to be found in some of the best pubs in the British Isles. The rise of the gastropub in Britain has resulted in a radical change in the way the British eat out. Michelin have recently awarded their first ever star to a pub! This great collection of recipes from the leading 40 food pubs in the UK acts as both a great recipe book and an invaluable guide book for the visitor to the UK.

Editorial Review:

A companion books to the PBS Television series GREAT FOOD.

Gary Rhodes has long been the champion of British cooking. In New Classics, his most ambitious collection of recipes yet, the culmination of his quest to modernize and enhance traditional British food, Gary revisits and updates such classics as Scotch Eggs, Steak and Kidney Pie, and Sticky Toffee Pudding. He creates mouth-watering variations and exciting innovations on much-loved favorites -- constructing an omelette from Lobster Thermidore, building a vanilla parfait with British clotted cream and nutmeg, and combining Welsh Rarebit with smoked haddock in tartlets.

Throughout the book, there are classic recipes that present both historical and contemporary uses of wild game. And in New Classics, he presents his creations of what are fast becoming future classics.

In addition to the over 300 recipes, there are special sections looking at the history of the many traditions that have shaped culinary Britain. Among these are the Sunday dinner, the origination of picnics, and the great custom of afternoon tea. Imagine presenting Individual Roast Beef with Bitter Onions for your special Sunday afternoon family get-together, bringing Gruyere Cheese, Leek, and Mushroom flan to your next picnic, and serving Homemade Scones with steaming pots of tea to friends.

With his creative use of the very best ingredients and traditional ideas, Gary Rhodes gives us the definitive book on British cooking for the new millennium. Destined to become a cooking classic in its own right, New Classics is essential reading for food lovers everywhere.
