Editorial Review:

A fascinating history of how Britain learned to cook, from prehistory to the modern age.

Written with a storyteller’s flair and packed with astonishing facts, Taste is a sumptuous social history of Britain told through the development of its cooking. It encompasses royal feasts and street food, the skinning of eels and the making of strawberry jelly, mixing tales of culinary stars with those of the invisible hordes cooking in kitchens across the land. Beginning before Roman times, the book journeys through the ingredients, equipment, kitchens, feasts, fads, and famines of the British; it covers the piquancy of Norman cuisine, the influx of undreamed-of spices and new foods from the East and the New World, the Tudor pumpkin pie that journeyed with the founding fathers to become America’s national dish, the austerity of rationing during World War II, and the birth of convenience foods and take-away, right up to the age of Nigella Lawson, Heston Blumenthal, and Jamie Oliver. The first trade book to tell the story of British cooking—which is, of course, the history that led up to American colonial cooking as well—Taste shows that kitchens are not only places of steam, oil, and sweat, but of politics, invention, cultural exchange, commerce, conflict, and play.

Editorial Review:

Jane Grigson’s Fruit Book includes a wealth of recipes, plain and fancy, ranging from apple strudel to watermelon sherbet. Jane Grigson is at her literate and entertaining best in this fascinating compendium of recipes for forty-six different fruits. Some, like pears, will probably seem homely and familiar until you've tried them á la chinoise. Others, such as the carambola, described by the author as looking “like a small banana gone mad,” will no doubt be happy discoveries.
You will find new ways to use all manner of fruits, alone or in combination with other foods, including meats, fish, and fowl, in all phases of cooking from appetizers to desserts. And, as always, in her brief introductions Grigson will both educate and amuse you with her pithy comments on the histories and varieties of all the included fruits.
All ingredients are given in American as well as metric measures, and this edition includes an extensive glossary, compiled by Judith Hill, which not only translates unfamiliar terminology but also suggests American equivalents for British and Continental varieties where appropriate.

Priceless Memories 5 out of 5 stars.

I did not buy this book for the recipes. I thought, and was correct, that perhaps this book might offer photographs of the Royal Family I had never seen in print before. The story of how this book came about is a wonderful story by itself. Read it and find out who the man was behind it's creation. There are private photos of the Queen Mother, the Queen, and a young Prince Charles that are ready for framing. And that is what I plan on doing this weekend. While I must purchase another copy to keep, I am going through my copy to remove the wonderful shots and frame them. My kitchen is decorated with numerous photos of the Royal Family. And yes, I have Union Jack rugs on the floors as well. The recipes are wonderful, but the photographs and stories are worth buying the book for. If you are an Anglophile as I am, or a huge fan of the Royals, this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

Dinner at Buckingham Palace is a unique collection of authentic recipes from the royal households, based on the diaries and personal recollections of royal servant Charles Oliver. It became a hobby of his to collect royal menus and recipes until he amassed a considerable collection. He also lovingly and respectfully hoarded a treasure of anecdotes, souvenirs and information on royal tastes and entertaining, to make his own unique and individual commentary, as well as a store of never-before-published private photographs. So, from Queen Victoria's habit of eating breakfast to the sound of bagpipes, to Prince Philip's favourite recipe for scrambled eggs, this book provides a delightful memoir of the tastes and traditions of the royal household over several generations.

Don't let rumors of English food being terrible fool you ! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a very well put together cookbook, that I have throughly enjoyed. This book deals with some period recipes as well as more modern ones. The recipe book is simply filled with tons of recipes, she does an excelling job of incorporating a wide variety of recipes into this book. There are no pictures, but she does offer some background info on many recipes.
This book is worth its price for its Apple Orange Tart, which makes up the best apple pie recipe that I have had the pleasure of enjoying. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking to flesh out your British collection of recipes, or if you are looking for a cookbook that offers a good selection of very good tasting period recipes.

Editorial Review:

The hundreds of recipes in Maxime de la Falaise's delightful book triumphantly attest to the virtues of Anglo-Saxon gastronomy. Rich with the historical sense of taste, this book allows you to cook the rudiments of a medieval royal banquet, an Elizabethan nursery breakfast, or an eighteenth-century tavern lunch.

I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

especially in light of the overshelming popularity of other British "cookery" writers like Nigella, Jamie, Nigel - all of whom only need to be identified by their first names. Anyone who likes them should immediately become familiar with Delia Smith. She might not be as glamerous or as much "fun" to read, but she is definitely as much fun to cook with, and her food is delicious, her writing is clear, her recipes are well-written and very easy to follow guaranteeing excellent results. This book is a good place to start getting to know Delia!

Editorial Review:

Delia's Winter Collection is a joyful celebration of the season rich with autumn fruits and winter vegetables, fish and game, soups and roasts, casseroles and comfort food. Delia seeks to investigate new ways to bring out the fullest flavor of ingredients, whether it is by oven-roasting or grilling to concentrate the essence of a dish, or by her individual blending of flavors to transform even the simplest of recipes. Delia shares her ideas for creamy risottos made in the oven, vegetable combinations to cook alongside main courses, and preserves that eliminate fuss.

brilliant 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains everything you need to know about tea and biscuits when visiting Britain. Never again have the Brits looking down at you in disgust when you don't know the proper protocol for afternoon tea.

Buy it. Read it on the plane on the way over. Never look out of place again at those important business meetings.

Perfect Read...again...and again...and again... 5 out of 5 stars.

It has quickly become one of my favorite books. I happen to be a tea fanatic, so obviously a book about tea and biscuits would suit me just fine. However, I am also quite particular about the books I adore, and this one fits the bill. Well written by an obviously intelligent human being, but also extremely witty and informative. I have purchased a copy for my adult brit-loving/tea-loving daughter. She wanted to borrow my copy, but there is no way I am letting it go! Buy it...devour it...come back for more. You won't be sorry.

Editorial Review:

Put a cup of tea in your hand, and what else can you do but sit down? This new book celebrates that most British of life’s cornerstones: the tea break. There is, however, another element to this ritual that is a must: biscuits. Finding the right biscuit for the right occasion is as much an art as it is a science, and it is a task that Nicey has selflessly worked on for most of his tea-drinking life. From dunking to the Digestive, the Iced Gem to the Garibaldi, everything you’ll ever need to know about British biscuits is in this book, and quite a lot more besides. So go on. Put the kettle on, take a weight off, and enjoy.

Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have collected a lot of tea related books over the years and have found it disappointing to await the arrival of a new book only to discover that it is a revision of a book that was originally published in 1991! A new cover design and the addition of the word traditional to the title with the same recipes does not make a new book. I waited too long to return it. CFL

Editorial Review:

This wonderful collection of the best recipes for a traditional British tea will satisfy even the most jaded of palates. Hundreds of recipes for cakes, biscuits, buns, scones, breads, and rolls are provided here with clear instructions and mouthwatering images. From Herb Bread, Cheese and Celery Whirls, and Scarborough Muffins to Melting Moments Biscuits, Fat Rascals, Seventeenth-Century Honey Cake, and Daniel's Coffee and Drambuie Meringues, there is something for everyone. All the basics of good teatime cooking are provided and great tips on common baking problems and how to avoid them. Including not only a brief history of the recipes (many going back centuries), but also the best teas to drink with each one, this is the ultimate book for enjoying the wonderful occasion of an afternoon tea.

Editorial Review:

In Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book American readers, gardeners, and food lovers will find everything they've always wanted to know about the history and romance of seventy-five different vegetables, from artichokes to yams, and will learn how to use them in hundreds of different recipes, from the exquisitely simple “Broccoli Salad” to the engagingly esoteric “Game with Tomato and Chocolate Sauce.” Jane Grigson gives basic preparation and cooking instructions for all the vegetables discussed and recipes for eating them in every style from least adulterated to most adorned. This is by no means a book intended for vegetarians alone, however. There are recipes for “Cassoulet,” “Chicken Gumbo,” and even Dr. William Kitchiner's 1817 version of “Bubble and Squeak” (fried beef and cabbage).
Jane Grigson's Vegetable Book is a joy to read and a pleasure to use in the kitchen. It will introduce you to vegetables you've never met before, develop your friendship with those you know only in passing, and renew your romance with some you've come to take for granted.
This edition has a special introduction for American readers, tables of equivalent weights and measures, and a glossary, which make the book as accessible to Americans as it is to those in Grigson's native England.

Editorial Review:

The author, one of the "Two Fat Ladies" of television cookbook fame, handles the history of the haggis with aplomb in this little cookbook. Haggis, for the unititated, is a dish commonly made in a sheep’s maw, of minced lungs, hearts, and liver of the same animal.

However, the haggis is much more than a mere meal.

The haggis, or some version of it, may be found in the histories of countries as varied as ancient Greece, Sweden, and the United States. Yet the haggis is most closely associated with Scotland and has come to represent that country just as pasta represents Italy.

Scotland may thank its beloved bard, Robert Burns, for this. Burns immortalized the dish in perhaps his best-known poem, "Address to the Haggis." In it, he refers to the haggis as the "Great Chieftan o’ the Puddin’-race!"

How far the haggis had come!

Originally a meal of the lower classes who could not afford to waste any edible portion of their livestock, the haggis mysteriously transformed into a delicacy deemed worthy of royalty. Queen Victoria, an enthusiast for most all things Scottish, said of the haggis, "I find I like it very well."
