Editorial Review:

The gastropub, that quintessential British culinary institution, the concept that has revolutionized British cooking over the past 15 years, has at last come of age, now fully integrated into the world of good food. The publication of this book defines that moment and gives the gastropub movement the classic work it deserves written by one its greatest exponents. Trish Hilferty, The award-winning cookery-writer and award-winning chef of the Fox Dining Room in London, has written a book that pulls together all the classic dishes that combine to make up the definitive recipe list for lovers of gastropub cooking. Recipes taken from her own repertoire as well as drawing on classic dishes from leading fellow gastropub chefs. Written in her inimitably clear and precise no-nonsense style, with striking photography by Jason Lowe, this is a book to turn to time and time again for wonderful dishes packed full of gutsy and bold flavors – the epitome of all that is so good about the gastropub repertoire. Nice book, but very thin, not for serious enthusiasts. Recipes are available in original sources and other publications.

Editorial Review:

Contains over 50 recipes from the 16th century, all of which can be reproduced in the modern kitchen. The book also describes the historical background and has information on food, cooking equipment, the serving of meals and the development of taste and etiquette. The importance of the colonisation of the New World on Elizabethan diet is also examined.

Great, easy book to use. 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful book that is very simple for the non-cook to use as well as the advanced cook.

The great Ladies best work! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Well researched, easy to use, perfect for the the seasoned cook or novice alike. She even advices you on what to buy in the way of cookware, a big boon to many a wedding list!
It is a touch evangelical, Delia is always prone to giving you advice like a stern School Marm (so it feels like something you have to do rather than might do!) and this is reflected in her slighty dry, bossy and occasionalyy dreary writing, think cooking with a St Trinian's Head mistress if you have never seen Delia on TV. But I have to hand it to her, if you follow her recipes to the letter YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG!
Just curtail the cookware shopping list or do as she says and get a MUCH bigger Kitchen!

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and updated, this cookery "bible" still contains all the established favorites such as Flaky Fish Pie, Christmas Pudding, and the secret of Crunchy Roast Potatoes. Delia has also added some new recipes like Stir-Fried Mange Tout and Roast Stuffed Goose with Prunes and Armagnac. Clear and comprehensive, the recipes are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced cooks. Delia also gives advice on new and widely-available ingredients like easy-blend yeast, filo pastry, and fromage frais.

Editorial Review:

Delia has chosen her best and most popular recipes updating old favorites and adding some that are completely new. These are books aimed both at experienced cooks and at newcomers to homecooking who can be sure that, with Delias friendly and approachable style, they will be guided by a trusted hand through her fail-safe recipes. The fourth book in the series is a collection of over 50 Fish recipes. Many people shy away from cooking with fresh fish because it seems too difficult and messy. Delia tackles this notion by providing the know-how and plenty of authentic dishes to suit all levels of cooking ability.

An excellent survey any college-level culinary collection specializing in food history will relish. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

College-level culinary libraries strong in Victorian history will appreciate Food and Cooking in Victorian England: A History, with its survey of Victorian times introduced by nine recipes detailing examples of food production, cooking and diet in early England. Discussions go far beyond the usual cookbook to include surveys of kitchen arrangement and duties, dining habits, social influences on food and wine choices, and much more. An excellent survey any college-level culinary collection specializing in food history will relish.

Editorial Review:

Nine recipes serve as entry points for detailing the history of food production, cooking, and diet throughout Queen Victoria's reign in England. More than that, however, Broomfield offers an introduction to the world of everyday dining, food preparation, and nutrition during one of the most interesting periods of English history. Food procurement, kitchen duties, and dining conventions were almost always dictated by one's socioeconomic status and one's gender, but questions still remain. Who was most likely to dine out? Who was most likely to be in charge of the family flatware and fine china? Who washed the dishes? Who could afford a fine piece of meat once a week, once a month, or never? How much did one's profession dictate which meal times were observed and when? All these questions and more are answered in this illuminating history of food and cooking in Victorian England.

Editorial Review:

Jane Grigson’s Fruit Book includes a wealth of recipes, plain and fancy, ranging from apple strudel to watermelon sherbet. Jane Grigson is at her literate and entertaining best in this fascinating compendium of recipes for forty-six different fruits. Some, like pears, will probably seem homely and familiar until you've tried them á la chinoise. Others, such as the carambola, described by the author as looking “like a small banana gone mad,” will no doubt be happy discoveries.
You will find new ways to use all manner of fruits, alone or in combination with other foods, including meats, fish, and fowl, in all phases of cooking from appetizers to desserts. And, as always, in her brief introductions Grigson will both educate and amuse you with her pithy comments on the histories and varieties of all the included fruits.
All ingredients are given in American as well as metric measures, and this edition includes an extensive glossary, compiled by Judith Hill, which not only translates unfamiliar terminology but also suggests American equivalents for British and Continental varieties where appropriate.

Editorial Review:

In their third uncensored romp through British and European cuisine, TV's doyennes of decadent food let it rip with all-new, rebelliously rich recipes and food for thought. This raucous ride finds Clarissa Dickson Wright and Jennifer Paterson storming across the cattle and pig farms of Britain to reclaim meat-eaters, searching through dead royals' repertoires for time-tested treasures, and even venturing down under to Australia for their delectable gems.

Companion to their hit series, The Two Fat Ladies Full Throttle offers a diversity of dishes that makes menu planning easy. These intensely flavored recipes deliver palate-pleasing meals that are a delight on your plate as well, for as Clarissa maintains, "Nothing is worse than an all-white menu."

In their own inimitable fashion, the Ladies tackle everything from potent cocktails and savory soufflés to full-flavored pheasant. Appetizers range from satisfying soups spiked with exotic notes like a Chicken and Ginger Soup to tasty crêpes, mousses, tarts, and terrines. Whether it's lamb wrapped in delicate phyllo pastry or a beef stew served with pumpkin scones, main dishes are both comforting and heartwarming, delivering a full measure of robust flare. When it comes to poultry, the Ladies incorporate a wide variety of seasonings to create Calcutta Chicken Croquettes and Spanish Chicken Andalouse. They attack side dishes with similar gusto. A fetchingly colored Tomato Tart and Sugar-Browned Potatoes, laced with a divine caramelized sugar, bring zest to even simple entrées. To finish off these hearty offerings, indulge in the Ladies' desserts, which include creamy custards, Apple Balls smothered in pastry, and a daringly delicious Chocolate Crème Brûlée.

Never has indulgence been so over the top and so very tempting. Replete with hilarious anecdotes from their forays into the British countryside and beyond the Channel, The Two Fat Ladies Full Throttle includes full-color photos of finished dishes. Just as their popular cooking series and two best-selling books won them a place in our hearts, The Two Fat Ladies Full Throttle offers us more delightfully decadent meals that are sure to please.

Food for Thought (and Murder) 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is one cookbook that you can actually read! Besides the tempting recipes, there is a lot of other information to digest. As to the recipes themselves, some are quite simple, others are much more elaborate. I found the relating of the recipes to Sherlock Holmes mysteries to be the real treat of the book.

Delicious deductive reasoning! 5 out of 5 stars.

The first time I found a copy of this book, I was most pleasantly surprised! I never even knew such a cookbook existed. As a lover of both Sherlock Holmes and British food, I am happy to add "Dining With Sherlock Holmes" to my collection of Sherlockian literature and numerous cookbooks.

Among other scrumptious items, I found a recipe for potato pancakes that I tried for Chanukah with perfect results!

I highly recommend "Dining With Sherlock Holmes"---and if you're not a Sherlock Holmes fan, this book just might "convert" you!

Editorial Review:

A recipe book offering full menus from four Sherlock Holmes dinners and recounting a history of the dinners and of the Firehouse Breakfast which has become a tradition with the Culinary Institute of America. All the recipes are served with a little relevant history and research.
