Great presentation and user friendly 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am Jamaican and know how to make some Jamaican dishes, but wanted to learn new recipes. I found this book to be very user friendly with recipes that are well known, as well as some lesser known ones. For the reviewer who said there isn't a recipe for oxtail, may I point you to page 101, right next to the one for curried goat.

Editorial Review:

THE REAL TASTE OF JAMIACA sizzles to life as Enid Donaldson embarks on a tropical culinary journey, exploring the unique flavors that can only be called Jamaican. Taste native cuisine prepared by local housewives, cooks, restauranteurs and roadside `Jerkies` that food lovers savour all over the world.

First published in the Carribbean by Jamaica`s top independent publisher, Ian Randle Publishers, THE REAL TASTE OF JAMAICA was brought to North America by Warwick Publishing in 1996. Four years and five reprints later, Warwick and Randle have collaborated to develop additional material on traditional Jamaican cuisine and regional variations to dishes that round out the flavor of this amazing and original book. In addition, new photography by well-known Jamaican-Canadian food photographer Ray Chen illustrates this revised new edition.

Good Stuff Here 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This compilation of food writing is perfect for the foodie who doesn't have the time to sift through enormaous piles of literature to find a handful of good essays. Especially interesting was the article entitled "Josiah & the Giant Onion", describing America's pathetic passion for gigantic chain restaurants.

Editorial Review:

Best Food Writing 2001 brings together, for the second year, the most exceptional writing culled from the past year's books, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and web sites. Within its five sections--Stocking the Larder, Home Cooking, Someone's in the Kitchen, Dining Around and Personal Tastes--read our best writers on everything from the year's most celebrated chefs to extraordinary restaurant experiences, from the latest trends in ingredients and equipment to unforgettable memoirs inspired by cooking and eating. Neither cook nor food lover should be without this remarkable annual collection. Included are contributions by R.W. The perfect introduction to Persian Cuisine... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As a Persian who's trying to learn to cook persian food, this is the best Persian cookbook I have. It lists the most popular foods, the receipes are easy to follow and turn out great! Almost as good as my own mom cooks them... I would definitley recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

This is a collection of authentic recipes from one of the world's oldest cuisines, chosen and adapted for today's lifestyle and kitchen. Here are light appetisers and kababs, hearty stews and rich, golden-crusted rices, among many other dishes, all fragrant with the distinctive herbs, spices, or fruits of Iran. Each recipe offers clear, easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. Most take less than an hour to prepare; many require only a few moments; many others can be made in advance. Besides its 100 recipes and 60 photographs, the book includes a useful dictionary of Persian cooking techniques and ingredients, a list of speciality stores that sell hard-to-find items, and a brief history of Persian cookery. Together these make a complete introduction to this wonderful cuisine.

Great recipes... 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Another reviewer panned this book b/c she bought it simply to "know Padma better." This is a cookbook, not a biography. The recipes are delicious, low in cholesterol and low-fat. They are easy to make and the instructions are clear, so the book is accessible to new cooks but still interesting for those with more experience in the kitchen. I think this is a terrific book, the recipes I've used have all been delicious (especially the Spinach and Garbanzo Tapas). I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

From international model Padma Lakshmicomes a collection of low-fat recipes that are delicious and simple to prepare. New in paperback, a tie-in to the upcoming, 13 part series starring Padma Lakshmi, to air on the Food Network in September. As an international model, Padmas schedule often leaves her with very little time to cook; yet she manages to create healthy and delicious meals. From her family and experiences of travel, she has put together easy-to-prepare recipes for the health-conscious chef. Each dish can be prepared in thirty minutes or less.

Editorial Review:

Chef Danyel Couet's life-long love affair with simple French food began in his paternal grandmother's Parisian kitchen. Here onions gave sweetness to the best of all onion soups, while lentils, asparagus and flavorful sausages were all treated equally lovingly. And the fries! There were no better fries than Grandma's! But of course the gastro polis of Paris offers much more than just the dishes cooked in Grandma's kitchen. After innumerable outings in Paris's many ethnic quarters, he has developed a love for couscous, strudel, and Peking duck that is just as strong as that for boeuf bourguignon and mousse au chocolat. Through eight neighborhoods and just as many kitchens, via markets, shops and restaurants--and approximately 90 recipes--Couet takes you with him to his Paris.

Lusciously photographed by David Loftus, The Paris Neighborhood Cookbook reveals the gastronomic secrets of the City of Light, a place where food and cultural diversity is at the center of Parisian life.

Pleasing recipes but more modern Italian than Calabrian. 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed a number of the recipes, and for the most part they keep in the spirit of cucina povera, but I was looking for Calabrian dishes that are strictly from Calabria. For example, parmesan and Parma ham are both Northern creations and a description stating that the latter is a Southern creation seems ill-informed.
Overall I feel a bit guilty having to give this three stars but I felt a bit misled by the other reviews. By all means buy this book for good, authentic modern Italian, but for distinctly Calabrian recipes, I would look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

For centuries, Calabrian food has remained relatively undiscovered because few recipes were divulged beyond tightly knit villages or even family circles, but Mary Amabile Palmer has gathered a comprehensive collection of exciting, robust recipes from the home of her ancestors. Cucina di Calabria is a celebration of the cuisine she knows intimately and loves, a cuisine that is more adventurous and creative than that of most other parts of Italy.

Nearly 200 recipes offer something for every cook, whether novice or experienced. All start with simple, fresh ingredients, transformed into sumptuous dishes with a minimum of effort. They are interwoven with anecdotes about Calabrian culture and history, traditions, festivals, folklore, and of course, the primary role that food plays in all aspects of Italian life. Complete with b/w illustrations.

Very enjoyable book with beautiful illustrations. Mouth-watering recipes included as well as the feeling the author knew and loved the royal family.

Editorial Review:

Darren McGrady began working for the Royal Family as a pastry chef and quickly moved up the ranks to serve as Diana's personal chef until her death in 1997. Here he presents many of the recipes he served the Royals, and Diana in particular. Filled with artifacts, personal notes, photographs and never-before-seen memorabilia, this is much more than a cookbook. It is an opportunity to see how the Royals really live and to eat the exact recipes that graced the tables of Windsor, Balmoral, Kensington, and Buckingham Palaces.

36 of 42 people found this review helpful.

Lari Robling's book "Endangered Recipes, Too Good to be Forgotten," is a pleasurable mixture of food, folklore, stories, and cultural and family history. The recipes and narrative make you want to head for the kitchen and start pumping parents, grandparents, great-aunts and uncles for family dishes and food tales.

From vignettes on several recipe rescuers and "Kitchen Wisdom" tips, to a section on how to collect family recipes titled "Passing Down the Plate," this work has something for anyone who eats, loves, and yearns for a link to their past. All accompanied by a chatty, informative and intelligent narrative. Beautiful work!

Editorial Review:

From Welsh Rarebit to Banana Pudding, Endangered Recipes reflects the diversity of the world's culinary tastes.
