Good Cookbook 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I never been to the restaurant before but from this book I can imagine their food is great. Its full of interesting, tasting, and quality recipes. Also these recipes are made to feed large families which is good with me because I have one. My absoultey favorite recipe is the BBQ Tofu Sandwiches oh my goodness it is the best bbq sauce I have ever made and the ingredients are so simple(I must note this recipe calls for honey but I use agave and it is still good). I must add that this book is not 100% vegan some of the recipes call for cheese, butter and milk but that can be easily substituted with its vegan counterpart. All of the vegan recipes have a little V by them to make them recognizable on site. So if you are looking for good vegan food for a big family, then check this book out.

Editorial Review:

Hands down, The Grit is the Southern vegetarian and indie rock institution. The Grit, housed in a 19th-century hardware store in the quintessential hobo college town, is the hangout of choice for musicians, artists, and writers, with lines out the door on weekends. Filled with the recipes that will allow you to take the secrets home, this cookbook serves up Southern-style, vegetarian soul complemented by international dishes. These recipes maintain a down-home soul food sensibility of big portions, simple foods, and classic combinations.

Mother's home cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I acknowledge the Madman's points: most of the recipes in this book do not conform to today's dietary standards. But bear in mind that this book was first written over 70 years ago. That's when my mother got her copy. She still has it with the cover's half-torn off and pages stuck in loose and scribbled on. This was a Pennsylvania Dutch housewife's book of recipes for Pennsylvania Dutch housewives. They weren't worried about waistlines or BMI numbers. They needed to feed their families who worked in the fields or guests over for a holiday feast.

I also agree that the strength is the desert section, but that is the specialty of the PA Dutch. My brother, sister, and I would spend winter days with mother making cookies from the recipes and I even took a turn at making the cream puff recipe once for a church social. They turned out great!

Not only is this a wonderful recipe book, but to me, it is a family treasure.

This is my most used cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

The recipes in this book are for farmers, who are cold all winter and hot all summer, so they are hearty and filling. However, if you are trying to cook light, they are easily modifiable. Use ground turkey instead of ground beef or sausage. Use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage, etc. You can often substitute canola oil for butter. You really only need to use shortening or lard when it effects the consistency, like in pie crust. Even made as they are written, these recipes are much healthier than the average fast food or restaraunt meal. They are also healthier than the average prepared meal out of the grocery store freezer. They are meant to be served up with heaping helpings of fresh vegetables. Some are great simple fare to serve up when you don't have time to cook. I find that the farmer's summer supper (a mixture of torn bread, fresh fruit and fresh milk) is great on hot summer nights when its too hot to turn on the oven and heat up the kitchen. I have used the sour milk griddle cake recipe for decades (substitute buttermilk if the idea of using sour milk bothers you, or sour fresh milk with a tablespoon of vinegar). Recently, I have gotten totally hooked on the buckwheat pancake recipe. I love the cornbread recipe, and I often make it by substituting a can of creamed corn for the milk. Its much healthier than eating store bought bread, with whole grain and vegetables both in the same bread.

Good recipe book 4 out of 5 stars.
35 of 37 people found this review helpful.

It was what I expected, but I was hoping to be surprised. However still a great overall collection of recipies. I would have liked to see more detail. For example the book sais "cook beets separately", well how long do you boil beets? Americans now adays generally just know how to open can, pour and microwave. Also substitutes for ingredients like pike and carp should be mentioned. I know from living in Lithuania that these fish are common there, but not easy to find pike and carp in the grocery stores here in the states. Also, the book often sais to use mushrooms. However Lithuanians are masters at mushrooms. They have different terms for a species of mushroom depending on when they are picked, if they are under, on the side or on top of a log, etc. I personally use cremini mushrooms for Lithuanian cuisine for the more "gamey" nature. To make this book special a professional editor could do wonders. It would be great to see the meals broken down by the regions of Lithuania, and a historical reference of how these foods and spices made their way to Lithuania. However, I guess I am reaching for the sky. I would just like to see a book that gets people focused on the amazing foods of Central Europe. So many times people ignore agrarian cuisine as "peasant food" and fail to see the brilliance of it's simple ingredients mixed w/ expert preparation. With all this said, I am happy I spent [the money] on this book. I will definitely use it as a reference.

Editorial Review:

Lithuanian cuisine is famous for its meat dishes and smoked meat products. Stewing and baking predominates, but many cold mixed salads are favorites as well. The most commonly served vegetables are: potatoes, beets, turnips, kohlrabi, beans and cabbage. With over 150 recipes, this cookbook is a collection of traditional hearty Lithuanian favorites like Fresh Cucumber Soup, Lithuanian Meat Pockets, Hunter's Stew, Potato Zeppelins, as well as delicacies like Homemade Honey Liqueur and Easter Gypsy Cake for dessert! Chapters included are Appetizers, Aspics, Soups, Meat Dishes, Fowl, Fish, Vegetables, Noodle Dishes, Beverages and Desserts. All recipes are adapted for the North American kitchen.

Editorial Review:

You've got a serious hankerin' for Kung Pao Chicken, but Wang's House of Noodles is 35 minutes away, it's overpriced, and well, it just plain stinks. Come to think of it, you haven't found great, let alone decent, ethnic take-out for a while. What to do? How about cook it yourself? All you need is to open up The Take-Out Menu Cookbook and step confidently into the kitchen. . . .

This first-of-its-kind cookbook features the top 200 take-out and carry-away dishes from the 12 most popular ethnic cuisines: French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern/Moroccan, Indian, Eastern European/Jewish, Greek, and Japanese. Why buy a Chinese cookbook when all you want is authentic-tasting but healthier-than-take-out Kung Pao Shrimp, Spicy Potstickers, and Mu Shu Pork? By focusing on the most popular dishes from each cuisine, Meredith Deeds and Carla Snyder provide starving chefs with the tools at their disposal to create authentic, healthy, and delicious meals that will make staying home worthwhile! Even highly experienced cooks can be rattled by sushi or derailed by dim sum. But with the help of the authors, who have more than 20 years of experience as cooking instructors between them, there's no need to worry! With their guidance, the unfamiliar territory of ethnic cuisine is easily maneuvered.

Editorial Review:

It's a country that boasts more three-star restaurants per capita than any other nation--including France. It's a country where home cooks--and everyone, it seems, is a great home cook--spend copious amounts of time thinking about, shopping for, preparing, discussing, and celebrating food. With its French foundation, hearty influences from Germany and Holland, herbs straight out of a Medieval garden, and condiments and spices from the height of Flemish culture, Belgian cuisine is elegant comfort food at its best--slow-cooked, honest, bourgeois, nostalgic. It's the Sunday meal and a continental dinner party, family picnics and that antidote to a winter's day.

In 250 delicious recipes, here is the best of Belgian cuisine. Veal Stew with Dumplings, Mushrooms, and Carrots. Potato and Leek Stoemp. Smoked Trout Mousse with Watercress Sauce. Braised Partridge with Cabbage and Abbey Beer. Gratin of Belgian Endives. Flemish Carrot Soup. Steak-Frites. Belgian Steamed Mussels. Belgian Steamed Mussels. Cognac Scented Flemish Waffles. And desserts, some using the best chocolate on earth: Belgian Chocolate Ganache Tart, Lace Cookies from Brugge, Almond Cake with Fresh Fruit Topping, Little Chocolate Nut Cakes.

As Belgians explain it, since one has to eat three times a day, why not make a feast of every meal? 57,000 copies in print.

In the Best Sicilian Tradition 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Sicilian Feasts is written just the way my mother and scores of my friends moms cooked (I obviously lived in an Italian neighborhood!) using simple fresh ingredients that are readily found in the home and garden. If you're into "supped up" complex recipes, then this book is not for you. If you're interested in real home Sicilian cooking then this is the book to buy. It's one of the most genuine Sicilian cookbooks I've seen. Buon lavoro Giovanna!!!

Editorial Review:

Offers more than 160 recipes, along with menus for holidays, notes on ingredients, list of suppliers, an introduction to the Sicilian language, and a glossary of food terms in Sicilian, Italian, and English. Illustrations demonstrate special techniques.

Too Funny 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I havn't had the opertunity to try the recipes yet but this cookbook is a great read. The recipes all look basic enough with a good mix of simple supermarket ingrediants as well as wild game recipes. I have about a 1/2 dozen dutch oven cookbooks and these are by far the best read so far. Unfortunatly despite the listing this is *not* spiral bound and wont stay open while cooking hands free. The second book, "more Cee dub's Dutch Oven and other camp cookin" is still spiral bound.

Dutch Oven cooking at it's best 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

For me as a German "Dutch Oven Lover" this cookbook is an easy and efficient way of learning how to cook with a Dutch Oven; the recipes are explained in detail and easy to change with other ingredients that are handy.
The highlights of this book are the tales which are very amusing and informative at the same time. It gives this cookbook a touch of a Wild West story book, nicely to read and entertaining.
When did you read - really read - a cookbook last time?
This book was fun to read and I learned a lot of "handling" my Dutch Oven and outdoor cooking.

Editorial Review:

The book is a cookbook focusing on Dutch oven and camp cooking, spiced with humorous and informative stories of Mr. Welch's experiences cooking in the back country of Idaho. It includes the basics of history, selection, and care of Dutch ovens along with many recipes which a beginning Dutch oven cook, as well as a more experienced cook, will be able to master. The objective is to prepare easy, healthy, and delicious meals outdoors.

Editorial Review:

The book contains 140 traditional recipes from home chefs and restaurants from across this South American country, spanning a variety of dishes that ranges from spicy salsas and hearty soups to the ubiquitous empanada and desserts such as sweet cream crepes. It includes fairly standard and simple recipes such as Chilean roast chicken and rice, as well as more complex and exotic ones like rhubarb mousse, blood sausage, stuffed meat (you literally have to sew the meat shut), and fried frogs' legs. Tasting Chile puts the native cuisine in perspective by describing its essential ingredients and the influences other countries and cultures have had upon it. It also describes the unique experience of dining in Chile, which has some foods seldom seen elsewhere, whilst at the same time it provides readers with substitutes for Chilean foods so they can easily male all the recipes in their home. In addition to recommendations for pairing wines with main courses, a special section on wine offers an overview of the wines of Chile, including the names and addresses of Chilean wine companies and the availability of their products.
