Editorial Review:

You've got a serious hankerin' for Kung Pao Chicken, but Wang's House of Noodles is 35 minutes away, it's overpriced, and well, it just plain stinks. Come to think of it, you haven't found great, let alone decent, ethnic take-out for a while. What to do? How about cook it yourself? All you need is to open up The Take-Out Menu Cookbook and step confidently into the kitchen. . . .

This first-of-its-kind cookbook features the top 200 take-out and carry-away dishes from the 12 most popular ethnic cuisines: French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Middle Eastern/Moroccan, Indian, Eastern European/Jewish, Greek, and Japanese. Why buy a Chinese cookbook when all you want is authentic-tasting but healthier-than-take-out Kung Pao Shrimp, Spicy Potstickers, and Mu Shu Pork? By focusing on the most popular dishes from each cuisine, Meredith Deeds and Carla Snyder provide starving chefs with the tools at their disposal to create authentic, healthy, and delicious meals that will make staying home worthwhile! Even highly experienced cooks can be rattled by sushi or derailed by dim sum. But with the help of the authors, who have more than 20 years of experience as cooking instructors between them, there's no need to worry! With their guidance, the unfamiliar territory of ethnic cuisine is easily maneuvered.

Editorial Review:

In this long-awaited book, Marcus Samuelsson introduces the simple techniques and exciting combinations that have won him worldwide acclaim and placed Scandinavian cooking at the forefront of the culinary scene. Whether it's a freshly interpreted Swedish classic or a dramatically original creation, each one of the dishes has been flawlessly recreated for the home cook. Every recipe has a masterful touch that makes it strikingly new: the contrasting temperatures of Warm Beef Carpaccio in Mushroom Tea, the pleasing mix of creamy and crunchy textures in Radicchio, Bibb, and Blue Cheese Salad, the cornflake coating on a delightful rendition of Marcus's favorite "junk food," Crispy Potatoes.
In "The Raw and the Cured," Marcus presents the cornerstone dishes of the Scandinavian repertoire, from a traditional Gravlax with Mustard Sauce (which gets just the right balance from a little coffee) to the internationally inspired Pickled Herring Sushi-Style. The clean, precise flavors of this food are reminiscent of Japanese cuisine but draw upon accessible Western ingredients.
Marcus shows how to prepare foolproof dinners for festive occasions: Crispy Duck with Glogg Sauce, Herb-Roasted Rack of Lamb, and Prune-Stuffed Pork Roast. Step by step, offering many suggestions for substitutions and shortcuts, he guides you through the signature dishes that have made Aquavit famous, like Dill-Crusted Arctic Char with Pinot Noir Sauce, Pan-Roasted Venison Chops with Fruit and Berry Chutney, and Fois Gras "Ganache."
But you'll also find dozens of homey, comforting dishes that Marcus learned from his grandmother, like Swedish Roast Chicken with Spiced Apple Rice, Chilled Potato-Chive Soup, Blueberry Bread, Corn Mashed Potatoes, ethereal Swedish Meatballs with Quick Pickled Cucumbers, and Swedish Pancakes with Lingonberry Whipped Cream.
From simplest-ever snacks like Sweet and Salty Pine Nuts and Barbecued Boneless Ribs, to satisfying sandwiches like Gravlax Club, to vibrant jams and salsas and homemade flavored aquavits, Marcus Samuelsson's best recipes are here. Lavishly photographed, Aquavit and the New Scandinavian Cuisine provides all the inspiration and know-how needed for stunning success in the kitchen.

Extraordinary Taste and Flavor 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Jerry Hopkins has raised the bar in food scholarship - Extreme Cuisine is an extremely entertaining read and a primary source for anyone interested in how (with recipes) and what other (often rural) world cultures eat. A most worthy successor to Unmentionable Cuisine. Great color photography inserts. Hopkins provides scholarly detail about some subjects some pet-lovers might find less tasty (eating dogs, cats, horse, monkeys, etc), some which are most assuredly unknown by most (eating rooster combs, wattles & testicles) and has a good sense of humor by including dumpster diving and eating roadkill. As Anthony Bourain learned, Hopkins is the perfect guide, the "Old Hand" to the other (than American style packaged foods) food worlds. A must buy for any serious culinary library.

Editorial Review:

Sit down for a meal with the locals on six continents-what they eat may surprise you. Extreme Cuisine examines eating habits across the global neighborhood, showing once and for all that road kill for one culture is restaurant fare for another! From the foreword by Anthony Bourdain: 'I could not have written A Cook's Tour without this book. There is so much I would have missed. And experience has shown me that no matter how frightening a dish may look on the page, in front of you, on the table, with a proud host watching your first tasting-and the accompaniment of much local beverage, it's almost always worth the ride. For truly-how bad can it be?" 'So dig in. Enjoy. Eat without fear or prejudice, secure in the knowledge that millions of people have been enjoying this fare for centuries without ill effect. Get away from your hotel dining room-and the tourist terror domes and range wild and free. Eat. Eat adventurously. Miss nothing. It's all here in these pages."

Sicilian Feasts is written just the way my mother and scores of my friends moms cooked (I obviously lived in an Italian neighborhood!) using simple fresh ingredients that are readily found in the home and garden. If you're into "supped up" complex recipes, then this book is not for you. If you're interested in real home Sicilian cooking then this is the book to buy. It's one of the most genuine Sicilian cookbooks I've seen. Buon lavoro Giovanna!!!

Editorial Review:

Offers more than 160 recipes, along with menus for holidays, notes on ingredients, list of suppliers, an introduction to the Sicilian language, and a glossary of food terms in Sicilian, Italian, and English. Illustrations demonstrate special techniques.

Flavorful and satisfying, Korean cuisine is a tantalizing balance of tastes and textures—fiery peppers are a counterpoint to mild rice, fragrant sesame oil adds a
hint of sweetness to meat and vegetables, and pickled kimchi adds zest with its tanginess and crunch. And, best of all, Korean food emphasizes vegetables and grains, making it as healthy as it is delicious.

The perfect gift for anyone itching to try Mediterranean cooking in their own home 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Parthenon Cookbook: Great Mediterranean Recipes from the Heart of Chicago's Greektown lives up to its title with a wealth of wondrous, mouth-watering recipes for Mediterranean cuisine, from keftedes (broiled meatballs) to pan-fried zucchini with skordalia, to stuffed grape leaves, roast leg of lamb, "the Parthenon's famous braised eggplant" and much more. Full-color, full-page photography of the dishes reveal just how tempting these creations can be - and perhaps best of all, the recipes are exemplary of the healthful "Mediterranean diet", which relies on staples that are good for the body such as fish, whole grains, vegetables, and olive oil. Further enhanced with a text introduction offering a retrospective on The Parthenon and Greektown since the 1960s and more, The Parthenon Cookbook is the perfect gift for anyone itching to try Mediterranean cooking in their own home.

Editorial Review:

This collection of terrific Greek recipes, from old favorites to unique house specialties, is also a tribute to the oldest restaurant in Chicago's fabled Greektown, a landmark innovator of legendary dishes like saganaki and the first gyros in Chicago. They include Feta a la Soto, Marathon Salad with Shrimp, Moussaka, Sokolatina, and more. In addition, Greek wine pairings are included as well as full Greek dinner menus with tips for entertaining.

A great and authentic starter to Vietnamese cooking 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Though I grew up in the states, my family is of Vietnamese descent and I travelled (and ate) my way through Vietnam, especially Hanoi. This book was my first attempt at making Vietnamese food at home and boy am I impressed at how AUTHENTIC it is to what I ate in Vietnam and in local Vietnamese restaurants. I'll think twice about eating out now that I know how easy it is to make at home.

Editorial Review:

From the author of the popular Quick & Easy Thai come these 75 oh-so-delicious recipes for every level of cook. Though it shares certain culinary traditions with its Asian neighbors, Vietnamese cuisine is entirely distinct, focusing on a bounty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs for signature clear, bright flavors with contrasting notes of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. Creamy chicken curry is paired with the zesty tang of lime juice and the heat from ground pepper and chilies. Crisp, fried fish is served with a puree of pineapple-chili sauce. Delicate, rice paper wrapped summer rolls merit a rich and savory soybean dipping sauce. From snacks and soups to grilled meats and seafood to the essential noodle dishes and desserts, Quick & Easy Vietnamese presents the full spectrum of Vietnamese cooking at its most simply delicious.
