If the only thing that comes to mind when you think of Black Forest cuisine is the infamous cream-slathered, cherry-studded Black Forest Cake, then Chef Walter Staib has a thing or two to show you! Nestled in Southwestern Germany, the region surrounding the Black Forest, or Schwarzwald, is known throughout Europe and beyond for its rich and internationally influenced cuisine, making it a top destination for gourmands from around the world. In this compendium of local yet worldly cuisine, Chef Staib shows that the cuisine of the Black Forest inspires much more than just a cake. Recipes include: Hungarian Goulasch Spätzle & Potato Stew Bienenstich Sauerbraten More than just a cookbook, Black Forest Cuisine is a photographic and culinary exploration of the famous region, lovingly presented by one of its own sons. Top entertainment, ok book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.

The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!

the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.

I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).

watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.

SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".

"If my memory serves me correctly....this book will give me recollections of funny and good times."

+150 on the Wow meter for the show, 6+ for the book;
-100 on the Puke-O-Meter for "the Other Thing"

True Lies: The Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Robert Irvine impressed people with his Food Network "Dinner Impossible!", pulling off extravagant meals in extreme circumstances. Extreme cuisine indeed. He attracted people with his brawny, macho man persona, and his ability to perform with grace under fire. He combined the "you can do it" mentality of Survivor host Jeff Probst with the extreme cuisine of the Iron Chefs. In his "memoir", "Mission: Cook!" Irvine regales readers with stories of his so-called life as well as elaborate recipes that ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK!

"Mission: Cook!" has challenging recipes, like roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding (he is a Brit-that's a fact),roast duck with white bean ragout, truffle oil and Parmesan cheese, duck breast stuffed with apples and chestnuts (eating the chestnuts ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK!),and the quasi-Asian fusion of tea-smoked chicken with chilled sour Brussels Sprouts. This is cooking to impress people. It's catering for a banquet, not take-out for two. Irvine has plenty of culinary talent, and if he stuck to that in this book,he wouldn't be in the hot water he is now.

"Mission: Cook!" offers "anecdotes" about befriending Prince Charles in the Royal Navy, cooking a fancy meal for Laura Bush at the White House, and entertaining the royal family at Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately, these are all soap operas from Irvine's imagination. Somehow, Irvine's convincing writing got readers to think these actually happened.

Now that Irvine no longer works for Food Network (he's been canned like sardines),"Mission: Cook!" puts him in the same category as the imaginary teenager JT Leroy and the once-Oprah-adored James Frey. "Mission: Cook!" shatters all his talents into a thousand little pieces, for the heart is deceitful above all things.

Editorial Review:

Robert Irvine has led a one–of–a–kind life. He joined the merchant marine as a teenager, and would go on to become a cook in the Royal Navy where he happened to befriend a man named Prince Charles. Since then, Chef Robert has gone on to cook for presidents, prime ministers, royalty and celebrities.

It's been a remarkable life and career, ranging from cooking on the beaches of Yemen for thousands of refugees to making a seven–course meal for First Lady Laura Bush and her friends on an aircraft carrier.

Trained by the best European chefs, Robert also shares his cooking philosophy, his best recipes and tips on how to add that special twist to any dish.

Editorial Review:

The breathtaking island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, separated from southeastern India by a mere 30-mile chain of shoals. This proximity to India has had an inevitable effect on Sri Lanka's cuisine, as did the successive Portuguese, Dutch, and British occupations. However, over the centuries the majority of these dishes have been modified to suit the local palate. Exotic Tastes of Sri Lanka highlights the gamut of flavors of this cuisine, which runs from hot and spicy to comforting and mild.

The chapters of Exotic Tastes of Sri Lanka are devoted to short eats (appetizers), salads, staples, vegetarian dishes, poultry, meat and egg recipes, seafood preparations, desserts, and sweetmeats (treats). An array of exotic ingredients that is key and integral to Sri Lankan cuisine enhances the dishes. For instance, gambooge, with its uniquely sour flavor, is often used in traditional seafood preparations like Fish Ambul Thiyal, while either grated coconut or coconut milk intensify most recipes, including Pumpkin Kalu Pol Curry. Local staples are delectable works of art, such as exquisite Stringhoppers, Hoppers, and Pittu.

Since the entrées revolve around the nation's favorite ingredient, rice, the loosely coined term "rice and curry" best describes Sri Lankan cuisine. Other staple ingredients include coconut (milk, oil, grated), as well as aromatic herbs and spices such as curry leaves, mint, coriander and fennel seeds, and cloves. Sri Lanka offers a particularly impressive repertoire of vegetarian and seafood preparations.

Sample menus, explanations of spice uses and availability, typical cooking techniques, and descriptions of traditional utensils complement the 157 recipes, all adapted for home cooks.

This is all about Greece!! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I am living in Greece and was given this book as a gift. This book will give you so many insights into Greek regions, foods, wines and life. It is broken down into food groups such as vegetables, cheeses, meats, and wines from each region. The photography is also amazing. After having lived here for two years, I can really understand why certain foods are from each region and how the cuisine has evolved. I have found the book very accurate and the recipes excellent. I have given this book to 3 others since receiving it one month ago.

Encyclopedia of Greek Cuisine! EXCELLENT!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a Greek-American and have been cooking since I was 5 years old. This book is the greatest, one volume, book on Greek Cuisine I have ever seen. Though I know a great deal about Hellenic Cuisine, even I learned a few things. The photography is FANTASTIC! The information is plenteous, accurate and very informative. Haven't tried any of the recipes, but they look good and authentic. The book covers Hellenic (Greek) Cuisine from region to region and is very thorough. It is also so beautiful, that it will make a great "coffee table book" as well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

A refreshing take on Polish cuisine 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book offers a spectacular introduction for the uninitiated, and a refreshing look at the classic dishes for those who are familiar with the cuisine of Poland. Author Ewa Michalik doesn't try to overwhelm with the sheer number of recipes. Quite the opposite--she selects some signature dishes and some lesser known ones, creatively updates most of them, and complements each one with page-sized photograph. With slightly more than 60 recipes, this book is perfect for the beginner who is curious about Polish cooking. At the same time, the quality of the recipes will appeal to the more experienced reader. Finally, the beautiful presentation makes The Food and Cooking of Poland as much a feast for the eyes as for the palate.

Editorial Review:

From its rolling lowlands and meandering rivers to its lofty peaks and extensive lake region, Poland is a land where good food and warm hospitality is at the heart of everyday life.
