Sizzling and fun. 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this cookbook! It has great simple BBQ recipes and the Truck Tacos alone are worth the book. The recipes are not just steak, but great combinations of meat, starch and greens. Lots of meals for the summer and summer parties.

GREAT COOKBOOK!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book!! The best part are all the side dishes -- it's so great to find something else to put on the plate besides a plain old baked potato and veggie. Some of them are simple and some are really exotic but so far they've all been spectacular!! I bought this book looking for ways to flavor up our weekend steak on the grill nights because my husband likes his steak cooked past well done. I didn't expect a "steak" book to include all these amazing side dishes. I love it, highly recommended!!!!!!

Editorial Review:

Steak is synonymous with big flavour, but home cooks often dismiss it as "eating out" food on account of the expense and care it takes to prepare the perfect tenderloin or strip. In this substantive take on steak entrees, Cree LeFavour shares approachable recipes for all-American, bistro, Far East, Tex- Mex, and Latin meals that are big on taste, convenience, and value. Using fresh ingredients and a variety of methods - sauteing, roasting, broiling, grilling, braising, and wok-frying - these recipes teach novices as well as experienced cooks how to cook steaks well.

Don't Waste Your Time or Money!!!! 2 out of 5 stars.

The book was part autobiography which made it interesting. I am a big girl and a great cook. I can tell that most of these recipes have not been tested. The measurements and the cooking times are way off. This book is not for beginners--an experienced cook will know to adjust the recipes. I was considering purchasing this cookbook but I decided to get it from the library first. I am so glad I did. I like the fact that Mo'nique is representin' the big girls--but she is not representin' in the kitchen.

Editorial Review:

From the cover of Essence to the stage at the Apollo, from reruns of her hit show The Parkers to her reality program Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance, Mo'Nique exults in the joys of being a large woman. Here, she explores the great love of her life—food. But this isn't food South Beach diet style. This is food with flavor, from chocolate and cream to sugar and butter and everything in between.

In Skinny Cooks Can't Be Trusted, Mo'Nique's fondest food memories (like her mama's stuffed fish that blew up in the oven but made it to the table anyway) are accompanied by cooking tips (when in doubt, taste it to make sure), food strategies (gather everything in one place so you don't tire yourself out runnin' around the kitchen), and "what to wear if you're gonna go there" (because if done right, good food can lead to good lovin'!).

Great, but title is misleading 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have always found Sheila Lukins' cookbooks to be excellent. While not always completely practical (but one could get around this by learning to substitute canned chicken stock for her homemade, etc.), the recipes always work, and 99% of the time they taste good.
I have tried many recipes in this cookbook since I first got it 8 or so years ago, and I have been pleased with all of them (especially her soup recipes, which are always delicious). I have made many of them for company, and my guests have always enjoyed them. (The Summer tomato risotto is a favorite recipe when the temperature here begins to rise).
That said, these are not all "authentic" recipes - this cookbook, I'm sure, was a Herculean effort in and of itself to put together, and tracking down truly authentic recipes would probably have been more work. This cookbook should really have been called "Restaurant Recipes from All Around the World and Recipes inspired by International Dishes" (or something to that effect.) If you are looking for truly authentic dishes, this is not the book to go to - I would simply pay for cookbooks by native chefs from the countries that you are interested in - but if you are interested in easy, delicious recipes by Sheila Lukins and her friends, a sort of continuation of the Silver Palate cookbook, then this is for you.

Editorial Review:

A culinary genius who helped change the way America eats, Sheila Lukins is the cook behind the phenomenal success of The Silver Palate Cookbooks and The New Basics Cookbook, with over 5 million copies in print. Now Sheila embarks on her first solo journey, visiting 33 countries on a cooks tour of cuisines, ingredients, and tastes. The result is pure alchemy--a new kind of American cookbook that reinterprets the best of the worlds food in 450 dazzling, original recipes. In addition, there are new wines to discover, menus to experiment with, ingredients to learn, spice cabinets to raid--and travelogues to savor. Main selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club's HomeStyle Books and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service; and selection of the Quality Paperback Book Club. 444,000 copies in print.

A TYPOGRAPHICAL NIGHTMARE 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Even though there were recipes and articles I looked forward to reading, I had to return the book, because the print was so small and the ink in many sections was light on white. obviously the art director by scrunching the text into approximately 1/3rd of the page, and by using ink that was off white on a white page thought he might win a design prize, BUT unfortunately for the author, produced an unreadable book

How much more reassurance do you need? This is exceptional! 5 out of 5 stars.

To date, all of the reviews here grant four or five stars to this book - and I am no exception. This little red book contains the most delicious selection of vegetarian Thai recipes that I have encountered in my 15 years of cooking vegetarian meals. Not only are the recipes quite easy in preparation, but they also are based on easily available ingredients and are very quick to make. The outcome is almost always exceptional - both in taste and presentation. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as a valuable addition to anyone's collection of cookbooks. As you can see from the other reviews, I am not alone. So, what are you waiting for? It's rare to find such a unanimously positive opinion about anything.

A very inviting guide to not just the cuisine of Portugal, but its culture. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The author gathered Portuguese recipes from family and friends for her Flavors of Portugal, so the book holds many surprises you won't discover in competing Portuguese cookbooks. Color photos pack a survey that also includes both cultural notes and insights on recipe origins and oddities. Dishes such as Traditional Oven-Roasted Sardines and Shrimp Rissoles make the most of seafood, so access to a good fresh seafood market is essential. Readers with such access will find this a very inviting guide to not just the cuisine of Portugal, but its culture.

Cookbooks

The definitive word on sumptuous Scandinavian cooking, now in paperback!

Drawing upon her rich knowledge of Scandinavian cuisine and culture, expert chef and veteran writer Beatrice Ojakangas presents a multitude of delicious yet remarkably simple recipes in this cookbook classic, available in paperback for the first time. Scandinavian Feasts features the cuisine of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and it includes menus made up of a bounty of appetizers, drinks, smorgasbord, meats, fish, soups, vegetables, desserts, and baked goods. Easily as engaging as the dishes themselves, each recipe comes with an introduction that explains the cultural importance of the feast and details its seasonal significance.

During the long, dark Scandinavian winter, the meals tend to be hearty and substantial. In Sweden and western Finland, a traditional Thursday lunch consists of a meal of pea soup and pancakes. A typical winter dinner might include Danish crackling roast pork with sugar-browned potatoes topped off with an irresistible ice cream cake. Christmastime gatherings, in particular, are often a chance to celebrate with a cup of hot glogg or Swedish punch. When the winter is finally over, the seemingly endless summer days are savored along with the fresh fruits and vegetables that are hard to find after the short growing season. During the white nights of Sweden and Norway, it is customary to serve a midnight supper after a concert or the theater, while a special occasion such as a baptism or anniversary might call for a feast of dill-stuffed whole salmon followed by kransekake, a beautiful towering ring cake of ground almonds.

No matter what your level of expertise as a cook or where you live, the recipes are easy to use. The ingredients commonly found in most grocery stores and a conversion chart for metric measurements is included. Scandinavian Feasts is sure to delight enthusiasts of Scandinavian culture and lovers of fine food everywhere.

Beatrice Ojakangas is the author of two dozen cookbooks, including The Great Scandinavian Baking Book (1999), also published by the University of Minnesota Press. Her articles have appeared in Bon Appétit, Gourmet, Cooking Light, Cuisine, and Redbook, and she has appeared on television's Baking with Julia Child and Martha Stewart's Living. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota.

True Lies: The Cookbook 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Robert Irvine impressed people with his Food Network "Dinner Impossible!", pulling off extravagant meals in extreme circumstances. Extreme cuisine indeed. He attracted people with his brawny, macho man persona, and his ability to perform with grace under fire. He combined the "you can do it" mentality of Survivor host Jeff Probst with the extreme cuisine of the Iron Chefs. In his "memoir", "Mission: Cook!" Irvine regales readers with stories of his so-called life as well as elaborate recipes that ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK!

"Mission: Cook!" has challenging recipes, like roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding (he is a Brit-that's a fact),roast duck with white bean ragout, truffle oil and Parmesan cheese, duck breast stuffed with apples and chestnuts (eating the chestnuts ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK!),and the quasi-Asian fusion of tea-smoked chicken with chilled sour Brussels Sprouts. This is cooking to impress people. It's catering for a banquet, not take-out for two. Irvine has plenty of culinary talent, and if he stuck to that in this book,he wouldn't be in the hot water he is now.

"Mission: Cook!" offers "anecdotes" about befriending Prince Charles in the Royal Navy, cooking a fancy meal for Laura Bush at the White House, and entertaining the royal family at Buckingham Palace. Unfortunately, these are all soap operas from Irvine's imagination. Somehow, Irvine's convincing writing got readers to think these actually happened.

Now that Irvine no longer works for Food Network (he's been canned like sardines),"Mission: Cook!" puts him in the same category as the imaginary teenager JT Leroy and the once-Oprah-adored James Frey. "Mission: Cook!" shatters all his talents into a thousand little pieces, for the heart is deceitful above all things.

Editorial Review:

Robert Irvine has led a one–of–a–kind life. He joined the merchant marine as a teenager, and would go on to become a cook in the Royal Navy where he happened to befriend a man named Prince Charles. Since then, Chef Robert has gone on to cook for presidents, prime ministers, royalty and celebrities.

It's been a remarkable life and career, ranging from cooking on the beaches of Yemen for thousands of refugees to making a seven–course meal for First Lady Laura Bush and her friends on an aircraft carrier.

Trained by the best European chefs, Robert also shares his cooking philosophy, his best recipes and tips on how to add that special twist to any dish.

Bringing the tastes and textures of Moroccan cuisine to home kitchens.

Helpful hints and instructional photographs accompany each recipe, making this great cuisine accessible to cooks at all levels of experience.
