Only a picture book 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I should have perused this in more detail at the bookstore, but alas I got too excited to see another book by Mr. Bourdain. I finally looked at it this weekend and much to my disdain it is primarily pictures. Nice pictures, but only pictures nonetheless. There is some minor text but not enough. I was hoping to find out more back stories about what happened, biting commentary (related to the episode not FoddTV "chefs")maybe lists of places from the show, recommendations of restaurants to eat at, etc.

I am a huge fan of Anthony Bourdain and of No Reservations, this book just didn't cut it for me.

Editorial Review:

An illustrated, behind-the-scenes travel journal of Anthony Bourdain’s global adventures.

More than just a companion to the hugely popular show, No Reservations is Bourdain’s fully illustrated journal of his far-flung travels. The book traces his trips from New Zealand to New Jersey and everywhere in between, mixing beautiful, never-before-seen photos and mementos with Bourdain’s outrageous commentary on what really happens when you give a bad-boy chef an open ticket to the world. Want to know where to get good fatty crab in Rangoon? How to order your reindeer medium rare? How to tell a Frenchman that his baguette is invading your personal space? This is your book. For any Bourdain fan, this is an indispensable opportunity to hit the road with the man himself.

Editorial Review:

In her most comprehensive volume yet, Madhur Jaffrey draws on more than four decades of culinary adventures, travels, and experimentation for a diverse collection that both intrigues and delights the palate. Dishes from five continents touch on virtually all the world's best loved flavors, for a unsurpassed selection of vegetarian fare.

More than 650 recipes exemplify Madhur's unsurpassed ability to create simple, flavorful homecooking that is well within the reach of every cook. Extensive sections on Beans, Vegetables, Grains, and Dairy explore the myriad ways these staples are enjoyed worldwide. Each section opens with a detailed introduction; Madhur describes methods for preparation and storage, as well as different cooking techniques and their cultural origins. Throughout she balances appealing, uncomplicated dishes such as sumptuous omelets and rich polentas with less familiar ingredients such as green mangoes, pigeon peas, and spelt. Madhur demystifies the latter with clear-cut explanations so that incorporating new combinations and interesting flavors into everyday cooking becomes second nature. She also offers substantial sections on Soups, Salads, and Drinks, as well as Sauces and Other Flavorings, to help round out a meatless meal and add exciting new flavors to even the most easily prepared dishes. Finally, a complete glossary of ingredients and techniques clarifies some of the little-known elements of the world's cuisines so that even the uninitiated can bring the flavors of Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and more to their tables.

Throughout this extensive collection, Madhur includes personal anecdotes and historical contexts that bring her recipes to life, whether she's remembering field of leeks she saw in the mountains of northern Greece or describing how corn-based dishes arrived in Indonesia through colonial trade. Committed vegetarians will rejoice at the wide variety of meatless fare she offers, and nonvegetarians will enjoy experimenting with Madhur's global flavorings. This highly readable resource promises to be a valuable addition to any cook's library, helping everyone make healthful ethnic foods a part of everyday cooking.

With a depth of passion and experience, and an ability to embrace and convey richness of place and taste, the authors of the groundbreaking Flatbreads and Flavors and the later award-winning Hot Sour Salty Sweet embarked on a far-reaching excursion to find the world's most essential and satisfying food. Along the way, they experienced firsthand dozens of varieties of rice, offering unimaginable subtleties of taste, as well as a staggering array of foods to accompany them, all providing a simple way to get flavor and variety on the table.

Seductions of Rice is the glorious result: two hundred easy-to-prepare dishes from the world's great rice cuisines, illuminated by stories, insights, and more than two hundred photographs of people, places, and wonderful food. Cherished dishes--Chinese stir-frys, Spanish paellas, Japanese sushi, Indian thorans, Thai salads, Turkish pilafs, Italian risottos--are shared not just as recipes, but as time-honored traditions.

Seductions of Rice will change the way we eat, the way we prepare and appreciate our food. It's as easy as putting a pot of rice on to cook!

A Conversation around the Fire 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Imagine that you-an experienced homebrewer-got to gather around a fire with some folks who had years of experience brewing versions of your favorite beer style. It would be hard to have a bad time, harder still not to come away a better brewer for it.
This friendly, if somewhat disorderly book is just that conversation. I love the complexity and depth of belgian strong beers. Occasionally, by dumb luck, I've brewed one. Other times, my efforts have been dull, or over-concentrated or just odd.
In these conversations, we get some clarity about yeast, malt, fermenters, temperature control and bottling.
I think the odds in my favor just went up. This is a book to mine for insights.

Lynn Hoffman, author of The New Short Course in Wine

Editorial Review:

Brew Like a Monk delves into monastic brewing, detailing this rich-flavored region of the beer world. It also examines methods for brewing these unique ales suited to commercial and amateur brewers.

amazing book- even for a non vietnamese 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I got this book I had very limited knowledge on Vietnamese food. There is a striking difference in ingredients, spices and herbs used in the Vietnamese cuisine compared to western cooking and the author takes the time to explain all the different ingredients used, how and where to purchase them and how to store them. I found that very helpful! All the recipes in the book are explained in detail and often take more than one page. The ingredients are also very well listed and the dishes are very well organized in chapters. The recipes are very easy to follow and I have been really satisfied from everything I have cooked until now! The author also tells a few words about each dish and its origin and characteristics making the book a true journey into the Vietnamese kitchen (and culinary culture) rather than a mere cookbook. I have a much better understanding and appreciation of Vietnamese food now and a lot of it is due to Andrea Nguen's book.

Editorial Review:

When author Andrea Nguyen's family was airlifted out of Saigon in 1975, one of the few belongings that her mother hurriedly packed for the journey was her small orange notebook of recipes. Thirty years later, Nguyen has written her own intimate collection of recipes, "Into the Vietnamese Kitchen", an ambitious debut cookbook that chronicles the food traditions of her native country. Robustly flavoured yet delicate, sophisticated yet simple, the recipes include steamy phonoodle soups infused with the aromas of fresh herbs and lime; rich clay-pot preparations of catfish, chicken, and pork; classic banh mi sandwiches; and an array of Vietnamese charcuterie. Nguyen helps readers shop for essential ingredients, master core cooking techniques, and prepare and serve satisfying meals, whether for two on a weeknight or 12 on a weekend.

Wok 101 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Very easy to understand and a variety of recipies. I bought one for one son and this one is for the other. If you want to make your Wok cooking sucessful, start with this book and you won't be disappointed. Binding makes it perfect for laying on the countertop (pages stay open)and easy to read your favorites, or maybe a "new" one to try. Lots of them to choose from.

Editorial Review:

The wok is easily the most versatile cooking vessel ever invented. Its one-pan approach saves time and trouble—and makes clean-up simpler, too. But what gives woks their worldwide popularity is the unbeatable food they produce—as these 365 luscious dishes so richly prove. Wok-steamed fish delivers more taste, and wok-fried vegetables preserve more of their nutritional value than other methods. Better still, each of these tempting curries, stir-fries, and soups can be prepared in minutes. The lavishly illustrated recipes include green vegetable curry and spiced noodles, mussels in tomato broth, Hoisin duck with pancakes, and sesame and tahini spinach, and represent a range of great cuisines from Chinese and Indian to Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese.

Why I Like THE RIVER COTTAGE COOKBOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Hugh manages to capture the natural enthusiasm he exudes for the subjects of food and self sustained living in his television show, in this book.

Nice pictures, a must have in any cookery book these days, are in abundance.

The book gives a good introduction to the worlds of animal husbandry and horticulture, which is exactly what he sets out to do, he doesn't get bogged down with detail and yet doesn't skip over things either.

The writing style is easy and informal, much like the tv show itself.

A must have for anyone who liked the show.

Editorial Review:

First published in the United Kingdom in 2001, THE RIVER COTTAGE COOKBOOK quickly became a hit among food cognoscenti around the world. This cookbook had more unusual recipes than I anticipated from paging through online. The pictures were very good. The book was purchased as a birthday gift for my adult son who is very much involved in wok cookery and he seemed pleased with the content. Haven't had any feedback from him yet as to how these recipes are working out for him.

Wok cooking is a simple, quick, nutritionally balanced way toward consistently great tasting food. Wok Cooking Made Easy is a terrific guide to spontaneous improvisation and creative innovation in your cooking, and leaves plenty of leeway for substituting ingredients and easily preparing a tasty, nutritional meal in a single dish.
